Is it still a crime if... in General

While we're referencing Wikipedia anyway, here are the relevant articles:

Actus reus & Mens rea.

Based on this (in the jurisdictions where it applies), it would be impossible to punish someone for a crime they are not aware they are committing, but it would be perfectly justifiable to inter them in an institution due to mental lability. And that does not take into account the "recklessness" and "negligence" conditions.

Just because a soldier is ordered to do something for his country does not mean that he is at fault.
You're contradicting yourself. What if a soldier is ordered to direct attacks against unarmed people by his country?

If they follow such an order, they are making themselves a guilty of a war crime, and should be tried by the international court along with the one who gave the order. The excuse "we were ordered to do this" was used far too often in Nuremberg.

Yay for TEH NEW WORLD ORDER!

I wonder if there's some kind of time frame for choosing the people. Do you hand in a list? Or do you have the ability to make people drop where they stand for the rest of your life?

Omniscience, the strength to maintain my sanity in spite of this, and the ability to do magic. After that, it wouldn't be that hard to abolish warfare and poverty without any extra wishes.

Also, wishing for two wishes is as sensible as trying to buy two apples by paying with one apple. Who'd accept that kind of deal?

And if they'd be random people, I'd propably take 100 $ cause I'm in desperate need of cash. Heck, hundred of 5 000 000 is very little, and thousands of people die (and are born)every second, so if a hundred suddenly kicked the bucket, so what? And if I'd be among them... so what? I deserved it anyway.

Killing two billion people at random (because you don't have two billion mortal enemies, I assume you'll pick out people you don't know), and donating the result of this carnage to charity strikes me as...

Well...

OOC: What a loss.

IC:

Melora stood at the tunnel entrance, watching Lisha's receding back as she returned to the portal out of Verwey.

Choices. Time gone, she would not even have shrugged. The Underworld is not for everyone, and she fared better alone.

Lisha could be an essential aid if the path turned more dangerous than expected. A self-important archer and a mage who could not open a door without collapsing? It would be madness to enter the cave without Lisha's help.

When did I need a companion in the icy plains and the lost city of Rang? Would I have found the great, terrible archives of Khom, buried beneath the sands, if I had had to take care of some surface-dweller tailing my heels? Six score years, and forbidden places that nightmares could not match, and in all my travels I was alone.

This is different. Lisha has saved your life.

So close to the fruit of more than a century of struggle! Life and sanity I have gambled away for the promise of knowledge, and at the brink of it I am to turn away?

Perseverance is the source of wisdom, but impatience will hasten nothing save downfall. You have searched and waited a hundred years, can you not wait a fortnight more?

Who am I to turn and run after a human? What duty compels me to follow a surface-dweller, an Easterling? When have I ever allowed lesser obstacles to stand in my path in all these years?

Who was she indeed?

I am of the shadow folk. The caves are my home, I walk where I choose and I answer to none.

She left her home.

And if? Had she forsaken her race when she left the caverns? Had she become a human when the daylight struck her? Her hair had remained silver, and the shadow on her mind as dark as her face. What was she, that she could not make a choice - a Verweyan?

She could not deny the changes. How often had she shuddered when thinking back to the ways of her people? When had she prayed to their goddess? When had she seen one of her own kind in the last two hundred years?

The way of the drow has remained with you. You cannot deny your nature.

I am not. Patience was ever my guide, even before I left. Curiosity and patience, and where would I be without either? I will go with Lisha.

You're going to regret this.

---

And for the second time this week, Melora found herself running, trying to catch up with a human female to help her.

Norran, still shivering with the exertion of opening the steel door - all for nothing -, and Andros, who had already vanished inside the yawning darkness, she left without a word. Let them go in and seek treasure. If they are lucky, they will find nothing. If they are wise, they will seek another road.

OOC: Gah, this was tricky. I didn't know myself what I was going to end up writing. Well, here we go.

Or you could just make it a 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 chance. Up to you.

If you feel like being nasty, you can make the computer always select the option that lets it win the game. Ie, selecting rock results in the computer selecting paper, etc.

But since the mouse control hasn't that great precision (sometimes, a single click causes my party to advance two spaces instead of one), I see my self using the keyboard when I just want to move a little (like when opening doors, check all shelves in the a library, etc).

This is true for Avernum 1, which is the game I'm playing now. I think in BoA I didn't have that problem.

It's not true for any of the Exile games, which the "clickclickclick" was about.

I do not wish to look at Alorael's broken image link above. hello.jpg? :P

I've dreamt about this forum before. In my dreams, I was usually either seated before a computer or before a book containing all the threads. Nothing very weird happening in those dreams. Except there was one thread that, in my dream, was the most brilliant topic that had ever been posted. I woke up, went to my PC and went to the forums. It wasn't there. And I'd forgotten what it had been about.

—Arancaytar, whose hair is not as long that of Legolas, and whose ears are slightly less pointy. Altogether a more far-fetched comparison than the Harry Potter one.

OOC: If Norran is Verweyan, he's not human. Admittedly, I made up that part about elven origin, but Zephyr went along with it.
Apparently, your post happened while Melora was absent from the party; this post is after she returned (ie. following mine directly).

IC:

A Verweyan approached the party, from the direction Melora had just returned from. While he was still out of earshot, Melora bit her lip and whispered.

"By the way, that fellow over there insists on going with us as a guide." As she pronounced the last word, she could not help remembering what had happened to the last person to make that offer, and judging from Lisha's expression she was reminded as well.

Won't work here, Melora reflected wistfully. For one, the Verweyans would probably not appreciate having one of their number assaulted. It was probably best to play along, even if following a guide through a cavern felt to her like taking beginner lessons in archery.

As the mage - who had introduced himself as Norran to Melora - drew near, he introduced himself to the other three, and repeated what Melora had just whispered.

The offer was quickly accepted, although Lisha barely suppressed a scowl. Despite what Melora had said, she had no idea about what opened the steel door, much less the likely convoluted passage between Verwey and the mountain. Her senses would have taken care of that, but it would have taken time they did not have. It was less with exasperation than distrust that she suffered this new member of their party of five.

OOC: Didn't feel like writing overly much dialogue. Whatever Melora responded to Norran before returning to her party, it was probably along the lines "I'll need to ask the others". As for Norran, he needed a few minutes to prepare himself for the journey, which is why he didn't follow Melora directly.
