With apologies to Alex:

IMAGE(http://images.polarisboard.org/arancaytar/humor/demod.gif)

Inspiration didn't give me any text to go with that, so the bubbles are empty.

Wouldn't it be an excellent idea if the most important historical events on SW (closing of Misc, lagot banner, etc) were retold in a cartoon?

The thing with ID-10 T33 errors is, if you've got one, you don't notice. Only others notice, and when they get exasperated with this realization, the ID-10 T33 error causes you to be offended if they point it out. Altogether a very annoying error, especially to those around the victim.

It can be "cured" with locks, cans and by pressing Alt-F4. But that's just treating the symptoms.

Congrats! :)

My site just passed its second birthday in July, but it has spent most of that time in a void of inactivity. :P

Are you kidding? Anyone who takes a math course at my school and doesn't do that is in a definite minority. Phoenix kept me entertained for hours. Falldown wasn't bad, either. Never got the hang of those FastTunnel-esque games, though.

I spent most of the period bent over my calculator too, but I was usually trying to write programs for trigonometric formulas or statistics/probability stuff. Hey, it kept me occupied! :)

Is that the real original banner, RC? Wow... O_O

It's not exactly the right form for a forum banner... it'd take too much space at the top of a board. Was the "TM & Scorp" signature the reason why both were demodded, although TM has maintained he had nothing to do with it?

Oh, and normal members cannot change banners. The two who might or might not both be responsible were moderators, however.

You may jest, but being a mathematician I challenge you to work out the actual odds of that happening.

As for the bitmap, the first one looked random, but the second one looked rather uniform (on the left side).

Given the immensely diverse number of patterns one could reasonably recognize as a face, and the even larger number of patterns a superstitious miracle-adherent is ready to declare a face, that's pretty impossible. However, it is possible to calculate the exact odds of one certain picture appearing.

1 : 2 ^ (64*64)

= 1 : 2^4096

Changing my wishes: I'd like it if the entire human race became telepathic, were incapable of feeling hatred, and thirdly could never be granted a wish again (that's a magical "Wish", not just any kind). That would solve a lot of problems.

But since I now have a searchable database for member numbers, names and post counts, I probably would have found out if I had wondered who you were. :D

Is that database publically accessible and does it include permanent names, in addition to ever-changing screen names?

Back on topic of dystopias, the one I found most disturbing after my good Soviet elementary school education was "We". It described the perfect communist society that we were supposedly striving for in USSR, but that society didn't look like a very nice place to live. By the way, "We" was the founder of the genre of dystopia and was a big influence on Orvell.

It's online, but not publically available. In other words, I can access it from a MyAdmin panel, but not from a public web page. I'm working on that last one.

It doesn't automatically include permanent names, although it's theoretically possible to assign a member a permanent name manually that doesn't change.

OOC: Melora pretty much went sour on Norran's offer. It's not nice of her after the effort Norran went to to open the door, but she really doesn't much care. She was drawn between entering the mountain caverns directly, and staying with Sequoia and Lisha, and she eventually chose the latter.

They are murdering innocent civilians at random in an effort to create an atmosphere of terror and to bring civilized society to its knees. The soldiers are there to defend the innocent civilians and protect the infant democracy. Please, Slith, get off your belly and pull up your pants; the enemies of humanity have had enough already.

Amen to that.

Messrs, can we take the politics to http://freerepublic.com and http://democraticunderground.org , please? The issues may have a place here, the polemic does not, and the insults even less.

"What did he say exactly?"

"I can't remember."

"I didn't listen."

"A week."

"Or a month."

"If he hurries."

"Does he?"

"He promised he would."

Only, of course, the coming of Godot would be something to be feared, not anticipated.

This topic is steadily declining in intelligence. Given that and the fact that the most ruthless people get the most power, and the fact that the most powerful people have the ability to wipe out humanity so many times over it would take scientific notaton...

I think I'd be better off wishing I lived on a non-inhabited planet somewhere in another galaxy, second a computer and thirdly an internet connection able to bridge the distance. In a similar way to many people on AIM, Earth is increasingly turning into something you wouldn't want to have anything to do with it except online.

Wait! That means R *is* larger than N.

All natural numbers are real numbers:

N ⊂ R

⇔ R = N + A

⇒ |R| = |N| + |A|

Where A is defined as the set of all real numbers that are not natural numbers, and |X| is the size of set X.

If we now assume that

|N| = |R|

⇔ |N| = |N| + |A|

⇔ |A| = 0

⇔ A = ∅

However:

1.5 ∈ A

⇒ A ≠ ∅

Therefore A is clearly not empty, and therefore the statement N=R cannot be true.

Neither can N>R be true, since N is a subset of R.

Therefore, the statement N<R must be true, even though they are both infinite.

---

Gah, you can tell it's been seven months since I last had a lecture on sets.

And that doesn't explain why it would be possible to prove |(0,1)| < |R| in the same way. Even though I am quite sure Cantor said they'd be equal.
