I think we'd all be happier if there was just an additional option to ask things that we type in.

I think the odd experience distribution is due to remainders left over from experience divisions. But, at least in Avernum 3, I am sure that the experience generally balances itself out unless you come across a special encounter that gives experience in a strange way, or if one of your characters kills an unusually powerful creature.

As I understand it, the lockpick function is handled through the door script, isn't it? Couldn't someone just add a check for a lockpick item before the choice for pick a lock is shown?

I think Darwin is "based" off of BSD, so it's safe against any crazy unix lawsuits. Plus, it is very different from any other variation.

Not to start a flame war, but NT isn't that bad...

Anyway, I applaud Unix for maturing so well over the decades. Does anyone know the general disadvantages of Unix, though?

Probably just corrupted data. The game worked before the transfer, right? I seriously doubt Windows is to blame for this grievous problem. Try moving the files again.

Jeff didn't draw any graphics except for the original original graphics for the first two Exiles. I don't think the graphics in his Exile games are really copyrighted because I know they've been used elsewhere and were supplied by the same art studio.

Inevitability in Blades of Avernum

Oh no! I've lost my Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring book! It's the special movie edition with the author's not in the beginning. It's not even mine. I haven't even finished it! I MUST STOP LOSING THINGS.

Anyway...

I would actually like to see a LotR scenario trilogy. Of course you'd need to add in a lot more things into the storyline to keep it interesting. Someone could look at the map in the beginning of the book and try to recreate it in the scenario. Scripting the AI would make the game very adaptive to the behavior of the story's characters.

Back to LotR...

Now that I think of it, I am surprised that no one made a LotR scenario for BoE. I don't think there are that many story parodies in BoE, probably because of the engine limitations. Bringing the subject up about the concept of the scenario might prime its inevitability, though.

What the heck do you people do to your XPs? My XP hasn't crashed at all yet. Sometimes it pauses for abnormally long periods of time, but it always start working again in a minute or two. But I also think that all the utilities in XP should be easily accessbile in one simple folder or program. The control panel just doesn't cut it when you need to do more advanced things, and then the programs or files you need to find are hidden in the jumble of poorly categorized files in the Windows folder.

Is it possible to use each character in your party's current position in a complex script to change the terrain around them? Then the fog would seem to get thicker and thicker. Although this would be pointless unless there could be terrain on top of terrain.

How many pushups can you do in 2 minutes? in General

I can do about 92 unbalanced pushups in 2 minutes, but I could probably do almost 120 if I do them all correctly. I never distribute the weight correctly, so one arm gets incredibly tired while the other one is still ok, so then I have to switch them. But then it's like doing one armed pushups which are difficult.

Free Will in General

You mean what I'd like to believe in is incorrect according to your information, Radiant. Anyway, I like things nice and exact because I fear the unknown.

Free will is an interesting concept since it would be immensely difficult to find out if it exists. You'd first have to find proof of something that is truly random. Then you'd have to prove that your brain contains these random functions. Or you could go back in time and find out.

I don't believe in free will, but that doesn't mean I have no choice. And therefore I am content with that.

You really have to define "free will" before you can ask quesitons about it.

I like the nice, simple outlook on the universe where physical laws have complete exactitude and there is no uncertainty. If you are given the equations and properties for a universe, you can predict exactly what will happen in the future, and it will always happen that way no matter how many times you compute it. I don't believe in parallel universes where you made a different choice or something like that.

On the other hand, uncertainty and the possibility of real randomness make free will possible. Then there should be provisions for parallel universes although that's not a given.

But the question about free will is kind of pointless since you are free to do whatever that is possible. Is free will freedom to do what you want, or is it just the product of a universe of uncertainty [chaos]?

And it's pointless at so many other levels as well. Why waste your life thinking about whether or not everything is predetermined? If it is predetermined, then live with it cause you have to anyway. If not, well, there is still no use in doing anything about it.

Can we buy a certain custom script that has abilities (hasting, shielding, healing, etc.) and then change the AI behavior (use ranged more than melee, run when this hurt and cast spells on last AP) for each match? You could announce which monster your monster would be up against ahead of time and we could submit our script changes with our imaginary little battle plans and, well, it would be quite interesting to see people's different strategies. Of course it does sound like a lot of work now that I've written this.

I love PC vs. Mac topics, but they always get closed. Are you people mainly referring to the OS Mac, or the computer? I'd convert to Mac if there was some more software for people like me available on it. But PCs just "look" more powerful for some reason.

By the way, does anyone know how to get a program off the uninstall list in the add/remove programs list in Win98 if you deleted everything without properly uninstalling?

Panther looks pretty powerful to me, but I'm just more used to Windows and its problems. It is kind of sad how Microsoft has so many resources but can't patch up all the holes in their OS.

I wish I had Avernum 3.

Why? in General

The purpose of "life" is to procreate or to ensure the future for your species. On a smaller level, you are supposed to just survive. But the meaning of your life is to do whatever it is that you want. If you believe in the afterlife, then the goal to gain a pleasurable afterlife. If you don't, then make the best of the short time you have on this material earth.

The grim outlook is to say that the point of life is to die for everything has an opposite, and the point of a beginning is an end. Of course, this doesn't apply to everything so don't bring up tiny examples.

I want happiness. I want variation. I want excitement. I want a bit of everything and to be whole. As I have said before in another topic, I believe that our residual minds live continue to function at a more finite level after our deaths. Therefore I want to have that afterlife with a life of experience to think and reflect on.

And the reason why we exist is because of whatever principals or powers made the universe the way it is and we "are" is a result of it.

Being helpful whenever I can be. But I also make very bad jokes and I say some pretty pointless things when I am in the mood for it. Making others feel bad makes me feel better.

I also post constantly so I can get my post count up.
