Quickfire does reset itself eventually, but you need to go farther away than Harston. It will go away if you visit a large number of towns and travel across several areas of the outdoors map. The most natural way to do this is to go away and complete an alternative quest [e.g. Ziggurat], then come back and resume this one. -------------------- "I can't read this thread with that image. I think the thrust of Magma's point is fair, there does need to be a more fundamental difference in aptitude between the classes. As Deli Vlish and Slarty have pointed out (ad nauseam) the current system of different starting values for skill costs is ineffective, mathematically it is too easy for agents to outskill guardians in combat, etc. If there were, say, a 20 per cent boost to the effectiveness of a guardian's combat skills, this might help to even the score. Although agents would have to not receive any such bonus - else with buffing we'd be back where we started. Edit: Or such a bonus for agents would be restricted to battle & mental magic only, not to blessing magic or spellcraft. For shapers it would apply to the starting level of creations, but not to healing craft. Or something. Well, it's pretty obscure, you're not exactly likely to find it by accident, so why remove it? If people are really serious about cheating they can always edit the scripts anyhow. -------------------- "I can't read this thread with that image. No, but if you did something using an edited script and then saved, you might need another edited script in order to get you out of it. For safety, I would recommend backing up the default scripts AND your save games to a safe location (such as a CD!) before you start messing about changing things in the script folder. -------------------- "I can't read this thread with that image. In terms of Vahnatai Lore, if you stole the old guy's necklace I think you are pretty well stuffed. I think VL is not essential to finish the game but not having it will make some spells/skills inaccessible. As a general point of advice, in Avernum games you should act morally (i.e. don't steal or cheat, offer help where it's needed and pay respect to any old creatures or people) in order to get the best outcome. -------------------- "I can't read this thread with that image. For me the best game is A2, because it introduces the Vahnatai, who are one of the more original aspects of the Averniverse. 2nd best is A3 because of the adventuring potential; although it does unfortunately spoil the Vahnatai somewhat. A4 is comparatively weaker in terms of plot and population, but it does introduce a good game engine, so I am hopeful about future games. -------------------- "I can't read this thread with that image. I've always used the PC versions and I've never found any major character to be missing. Even under Windows XP. So you went to Vahkhos's place and couldn't find anyone you could talk to? That could be an error or it could be an example of the feature that NPCs do tend to wander around (sometimes even going through secret doors), hence making finding them when you want quite tricky. The latter is more likely if all the other not-yet hostile undead are still wandering about. Go back and have another look. If it really is an error, it sounds like a corrupted save-file. You might need to reinstall, and start the game again from the beginning. Maybe you'd get a better response on the technical support forum? -------------------- "I can't read this thread with that image. But then, that's not a complaint." -Scorpius Geneforge 4 stuff. I can't really remember, but when you kill the King, either Erika teleports you away automatically, or you have to find a return portal (very likely behind a secret door). I don't particularly remember it and I completed it without any walkthroughs, so it must be standard Exilogy. The #1 Rule of Exile: There's Always a Secret Door, Except When There's a Special Item. Edit: I just played the battle again. You should be teleported away immediately you kill King H. The sound effects are such fun: [whip crack][oooh!][whip crack][uhhh!] and let's not forget the kill spell sound [chug-a-chug][blast!] [ Monday, May 29, 2006 11:15: Message edited by: Micawber ] -------------------- "I can't read this thread with that image. Nice variation - we should use IBTCXSAS in future, it's much more catchy than IBTL. OT, I hope X does eventually get his anvil spell to work. Although based on A4, where he's basically just an animated set of bones in a cloak, I'm not too hopeful. -------------------- "I can't read this thread with that image. Congrats MagmaD. It's refreshing to see someone so enthusiastic about the boards, unlike some of us cynics... Fair comment. However in the end game you are also usually fighting multiple enemies - for example in the monastery caves, the monsters are spawned in pairs of mixed type. While a rotghroth fights the enemy drayk/gazer/etc, one of the other attackers fights the enemy rotghroth. I find it's rare that a rotghroth doesn't have something to fight. And unlike magic creations, it never runs out of energy. -------------------- "I can't read this thread with that image. But then, that's not a complaint." -Scorpius Geneforge 4 stuff. I think battle shaping is worthwhile exclusively because of rotghroths. They are survivors - lots of health - and their attack slows and is lethal to all enemies except other rotghroths. -------------------- "I can't read this thread with that image. Let's remember that in Avernum you have four characters with (presumably) different skills, so the issue of balance is less problematic. You aren't reliant on just one strategy, in effect you have four strategies running simultaneously. Thus you are much less likely to run into trouble. Someone with a knowledge of statistics can probably quantify the effect. PS. It's balance and Alorael. If I don't say it, someone else will. -------------------- "I can't read this thread with that image. But then, that's not a complaint." -Scorpius Geneforge 4 stuff. Actually I prefer the GF3 form of terror vlish. Terror attack irritates me because you spend half your time running trying to catch up with the fleeing enemy. I prefer the GF3 terror vlish poison attack, which is very powerful. Edit: However, terror was useful against Lord and Lady Rahul. I tend to run a guardian plus magic creations. Make an artila as early as possible, at some point upgrade to a terror vlish, then switch to a gazer when available. I don't spend any points on other shaping skills. No magic except for healing craft & 2 points of blessing magic. It works, just about, but my guardian seems to spend a lot more of his time healing than he does waving a sword about. Very reliant on pods and crystals. -------------------- "I can't read this thread with that image. But then, that's not a complaint." -Scorpius Geneforge 4 stuff.
