Iraqi aftermath in General

Getting back to Iraq, my principal reason for being against the war with Iraq is that 40% of the Iraqi population is dependent on food aid. When the war started, that food aid stopped.

The war went on for a good three weeks, and very little aid poured in afterwards. I'd say three weeks is a sufficient amount of time for a whole lot of people to die.

I'd imagine it's either your browser or your internet connection. Try changing your browser for this download. Also, with certain connection companies, such as Freeserve, you will be disconnected after a certain amount of time, but the timer on your computer will still say you're online.

quote:
It's true. It's time you all face up to the fact that life is meaningless, that we all exist via others' perception of ourselves, that our realities are limited to only what we craft with our minds. For the billions of people on the other side of the world, we don't exist, we won't exist, and we never existed. For the people that remember us now -- in a couple of decades we will have been forgotten and never have existed either. Even those "immortalized" in history records or books have meaningless existences for their existences are limited to words on a piece of paper. Burn the paper, kill all the people that know, and voila, no more existence.

And of course idiots can't accept this, we as humans just *have* to have some sort of HIGHER MEANING so we create religion to give us meaning in life. You know what Marx said -- "Religion is the opiate of the masses." We use it to justify the inexplicable, but that stuff is old now. We have science to replace Noah's Ark and the divine incest that repopulated the animal and human population of the earth.

There is no meaning in life. So when someone dies, sure it hurts you, but guess what? A lot of us really don't care. As Lemur said, we didn't know these people, we won't know these people, and the only reason anyone might have the slightest feeling for you is because they know you and it's what society taught us - "When someone's sad, say you're sorry." -- one of the most ridiculous and illogical and stupid phrases ever. At least that's how I feel

Just another faceless name, meaningless lives, forgotten in a few years. And I agree that TM is being hypocritical.

Ed really wasn't making any low blows or flaming. He was saying that her death made him happy because he's insane. And he said that life is meaningless, which it is. So stop banging on him and stop trying to believe that you have some higher meaning, diminish the hope you have for a meaning in life because there is no meaning in life. You die. The end.

You know, I've met people like this before. They are either people who take atheism to the point of religion, or people who believe they are Satan's son (or grand-son, to be more precise).

Now the above people were quite clearly crazy, however you are quite clearly not. My beliefs were leaning this way, until a few weeks ago, when my grandma died. It wasn't so much the effect it had on me, but the effect it had on my dad, that affected me. Until you see such emptiness, such loss, you don't have a clue about humanity.

I've always been concerned with the arrogance of people who say "Life is meaningless". They always seem to feel that they have the edge over the rest of us because they've accepted the inevitable.

Of course, there is another option, which is to tear away your eyes from that computer screen and make the world a little better. As far as I'm concerned, that philosophy is the lazy man's excuse to let the world rot around him.

I'd contradict that, Arancayter. Ed just happens to be an extremely nasty person. There's always one bad egg in the bunch.

I offer my deepest condolences for your loss.

It's not about the amount of land, it's about the quality. We Brits have one of the best climates for producing food. However, the Vikings had relatively poor land for farming, hence the need to go raiding.

I think that if Dr. Kelly's death was suicide then it would have to have been premediatated. They found painkillers on him that he would have presumably used to stop the pain of bleeding to death.

Of course if it was assasination, the painkillers would have been planted.

The judicial inquiry that has been announced has been promised to take a matter of weeks, rather then months.

If weapons of mass destruction were in Iraq, I see that as all the more reason not to go to war. What happens with bombing? You get confusion. In that confusion, it would be very easy for the weapons to fall into the hands of those very people who we want not to have them.

I fear the new regime that will be brought in in Iraq. I feel that the chances are that the new regime will be an Islamic Republic that will be pro-America. Mixing church and state is always a bad idea, as it leads to religious persecution.

Yes, yes, JF you're quite right. I now see it's quite obvious. All Africans are vicous, barbaric savages. I mean, that guy used to eat people! What kind of people are they?

In the end, dictators don't do a tremendous amount of damage to countries in the long run. I don't know much about this Ugandan guy, but I'm sure it was a colonial power that put him on his way to the top.

I'd always laboured under the illusion that SMoE was an intelligent, well-if-slightly-misguided-intentioned talented debater.

I think the major reason people dislike Harry Potter is because they are the people who would normally dislike trends. I have to admit, normally I'm one of those people. I'm first to criticize and last to compliment.
However, I discovered a nice get-out clause for this stereotype I'd normally fall into. I discovered the books long before they became popular, and so avoided despising Harry Potter for all the merchandise.
I think they're great books. They've got children to read again - who doesn't want that? They may not be the best fantasy books. The Lord of the Rings and His Dark Materials series outstrip them in ever regard. But still, they encourage people to read more fanatsy books and again, that's a good thing.

And, if all other arguments fail, they're a few steps up the ladder from David Eddings.

Apart from that snide comment about hippies insulting the whole of my immediate family, I'm willing to let it slide.

I would love to correct you of this misinformation about hippies, but it seems that people have been trying to correct your various ignorances since you joined these boards. But I might as well try.

It seems that the idea of hippies just being about drugs and sex is quite widespread in America. Probably because you haven't had any "real" hippies since the Vietnam War.

All the hippies I know are peace-loving people, who may like to use recreational drugs occasionally. My dad (long-time hippy) has never smoked a joint in his life.

I hate to say it, but I support Drakefyre taking a sterner stance towards spammers and the like. It seems that the board will take a downward spiral towards degeneration if something is not done about spammers.

It is sad that second, third and fourth chances can't be given to spammers - people like SM and Shotts (remember him?) ruined this. But do remember Shadow, now VWM, who completely reformed himself from his old spamming self.
