I'm sure I read something somewhere about how consciousness may be created by the semi-quantum nature of our brain.

So free will in the form of quantum uncertainity may have very real effects on our free will.

Also, with the rise of computing, I fail to see how physical rules can govern everything. Before computers, you could argue that physical rules govern how that penny drops, plotting it's trajectory, etc. etc.

However, now we have computers, and unless I'm wrong, if you roll a dice on a computer there is no way of telling what number it will land on. The physical environment has no effect on that function that goes on in the computer.

Therefore, barring any significant holes in that theory, I believe that if the physical laws of the universe do not govern a computing calculation, then they cannot hope to govern something as sophisticated as the human brain.

The test seems to have changed since last I took it, but I'm still in roughly the same area (hard-left wing libertarian).

There is indeed a vegetarian option, Stughalf, in the form of melons.

Suffice to say, I'll bring them.

But the Crystal Souls were *actual* beings. I'd put more value over the life of one person then I would over the Statue of Liberty.

Those are all insignificant in the way that they are not going to change anything in the world of any importance. People might go and see them, but they're not going to place their lives around them, like the Vahnatai do around the Crystal Souls.

I think it's more the fact that she's crazy then anything, Drakey.

I think that the stealing of the crystal souls is a *tiny* bit more important then the destruction of an insignificant statue.

Londar breathed in the fresh air of home.

Here they were, in a small seaport (the place they had set out from, in fact). Most of the lads were heading over to the local bar, but Londar had other plans. Regardless, he'd unlikely be welcome with that crowd - he'd never gotten on with the idiotic core that the army mostly comprised of.
No, he knew a nice quiet place that would suit him fine.

He made his way across town, and entered the Crossed Lion. At the last moment between opening the door and going in, he remembered he still had his uniform on....

....and was met by an incoming beer mug. He thought fast, brought his bow around his shoulder, using it as a shield against it.

"Get out of town, Imperial scum!" shouted one drunk, in a slurred tone.

Londar tried to draw himself up and look intimidating, but was only met by more beer mugs. There was only one thing for it.

Faster then lightning, he whipped his bow round once more, and before anyone knew, an arrow had whistled through the room, and knocking a beer mug out of a would assailant's hand.

He drew himself up once more and said, "I would like a drink, bartender. Unless anyone has a problem with that?"

Silence had never sounded so quiet.

Myeh, I guess I'm just prejudiced against Lords.

Phantom isn't all that bad, but other things he's done are just plain awful (I'm thinking Cats).

I just feel he's a talentless musician who makes crap musicals. The fact that the guy's a Lord makes it all the worse.

Though I won't pretend to having listened to all of his works, so it's possible he's done some good stuff.

"Love on the Rocks With No Ice" , The Darkness.

Apologies for insulting your musical tastes, but I just can't let someone listen to Andrew Lloyd Webber without a comment. I just can't.

Londar began his meal, a small portion of dried meat (not that he could expect any better - this was the army and this was a ship), chewing every bite carefully and methodically. This was how he ate most of the time - eating slowly, while thinking on the day's events.

The word was that they were heading back to Pralgad. Civil war was breaking out there - and his army would have to throw their weight behind one faction or another. The whole thing stunk of politics, and if there was one thing Londar had learned to despise, it was politics. It was one of the reasons he had never been promoted very far through the army - he couldn't stand the petty rivalries and arguments that tended to be rife among the upper ranks.

From what he heard, the most likely alliances were to be either with the Solarans or Kylens - they had both offered them dominion over Aizo (which they would have had anyway, he thought bitterly, if they had never left). The Ironclads had yet to make an offer - but they were being overrun.

He knew little about any of the factions and found he did not care. Fighting his own people, whatever faction they were in, had not been what he'd signed up for. He wasn't sure he wanted to be part of this civil war.

I hate to break it, but C++ will not, in any way shape or form, help you to create 3-D graphics. It will allow you to create an engine to put those graphics *in*, but you will require a whole different line of program to create 3-D graphics.

The book is a very good (if heavy) guide to C++, but only if you're reasonably commited. Needless to say, when it comes to programming I have the procrastination level of a sloth and the attention span of a brainless moron.

If you're on a Mac, I believe the information is stored in the Exile II Preferences file (in the System Folder). Otherwise, just e-mail Jeff, they're usually very accomodating about this kind of thing.

New York City Cops, The Strokes.

I'm not affected by swearing in any form, really. For me, it's simply a way of adding emphasis to a sentence. I guess music is something that can require more emphasis then most things at some points.

I'm fairly sure the British version is "five gold rings". I've never heard it sung "golden", and I'm not even sure how the tune would go.

Londar was proud to be serving his army, not only doing something useful but something essential. However, he was slightly apprehensive. How could he, a humble archer, find the natives' base where all other well-trained scouts had failed?
There was no use, he thought to himself, feeling sorry for himself. It would do no good to desert - even if they couldn't find the natives, they always found traitors. No, there was nothing else to do but set out.

Early next morning, Londar picked up his bow and three quivers of arrows. There was no point taking food - he could never take enough to cover his whole trip, he would have to rely on his hunting skills.
He'd secretly been hoping for some kind of send off, but there was nothing as he left his small encampment. They had no idea where he was going (excluding the top officials), and why should they care?, he thought to himself, bitterly.
Once he was clear of the encampment, he picked up his pace. He had no idea where to start looking - every plan that formulated in his mind - searching wildly for the base, ambushing a patrol, etc. etc would have required dozens of troops - and all he had was his own marksmanship. The chances were, he could take five troops from a vantage point before being noticed - but once he was noticed, they would be upon him. Searching wildly could, and would, take years and even then, there would be little hope of finding the base.
He continued walking for hours, until sunset. The goblins would be out soon, he thought, even though most of them had been slaughtered by the Empire. It would be a tolerable food source - while not what he was accustomed to, it would not be as bad as other meats he could eat.
Soon, he came upon a group of four goblins. Removing the same number of arrows from his quiver, he shot two before they even knew what was happening. The other two began to ran helplessly - but they had no hope and Londar shot them down with ease.
He began cutting up one of the bodies and noticed a note on the goblin's body. This was almost impossible - he had no idea that goblins could even read, let alone in Imperial script.

"These goblins will provide excellent cannon fodder for you, my native friends. Begin your attack quickly, and I will do my best to split the Aizoan invasion in two. You will live in peace, and I will be ascended within the Empire beyond all my dreams."

This seemed treasonous to Londar. He continued to mull over it and noticed a small green tinge within the note. He pulled at it, to reveal a map, with the natives' base labelled upon it.

Best finish his mission before he reported this newly discovered treason.
