I'm fairly sure the British version is "five gold rings". I've never heard it sung "golden", and I'm not even sure how the tune would go. -------------------- KazeArctica: "Imagine...wangs everywhere...and tentacles. Nothing but wangs and tentacles! I believe gold rings are worth much more than those that are simply golden. Unless the golden part is covering platinum. :P -------------------- Lt. Sullust Cogito Ergo Sum Polaris Posts: 2462 | Registered: Wednesday, October 3 2001 07:00 |

Uh... each line is an eigth note, sixteenth note, or quarter note, depending on how fast you're singing. I assume you know the tune, and should be able to figure out how to sing it from this... the "en" of "golden" is held over that fourth note, and the "rings" can be held for two notes, as I've indicated, or for the three or four notes, two of which I've left blank. The two notes in "five" are slurred, but you probably knew that already. Hope this helps =] EDIT: Fixed the code. EDIT2: Or if it's pure gold, Sullust... the golden coloring could be due to the fact that the rings are, in fact, cold... Thank you Morgan. You talk sense (almost). And Sir David, you're now just confusing me. Since when has "Five" had two notes. That's surely not right! My teacher e-mailed me his alternative lyrics, but I can't be bothered posting them. I'm going to LOTR. Bye. Merry Christmas, Joyeux Noël, Vrolijk Kerstfeest, Frohe Weinachten everyone. -------------------- ~ørangutan I want high-bit characters in my displayed name!!! :( :( :( (Or at least an exclamtion point!) I've heard both, but "Fi-ive go-old ri-i-i-ings" makes more sense to me. Holding out one syllable for two notes on gold is awkward, but no more awkward than doing the same for five. Golden rings implies that they're brass, or painted tin, or something. —Alorael, who is not really an expert in Christmas lyrics. I'm no expert either, but most of the sources I've consulted indicate that it is "five golden rings." Although "golden" might indicate a poorer quality of ring, in my opinion the lyric just sounds better this way. -------------------- "Let a man find himself, in distinction from others, on top of two wheels with a chain- at least in a poor country like Russia- and his vanity begins to swell out like his tires. In America it takes an automobile to produce this effect."- Leon Trotsky Posts: 1798 | Registered: Sunday, October 5 2003 07:00 |

"Golden" definitely goes better in the lyrics. I don't know why though, my brain just thinks that way. The song flows more smoothly and less awkwardly with Golden in my perspective... -------------------- 73|-| 1|\|\/1|\|<1|3|_3 |30063y|\/|4|\| AHEM: Chance Forums! -Reality Corp. Yeah, "go-old" just sounds bad. And why does "golden" have to imply lower quality? I mean, what is a gold ring's coloring? Pinkish? Reddish? I'd say "golden" is the correct word for the coloring of a gold ring... -------------------- And though the musicians would die, the music would live on in the imaginations of all who heard it. -The Last Pendragon TEH CONSPIRACY IZ ALL Les forum de la chance. Well, again in my perspective, gold ring means gold ring. Golden means more like it has gold on it, but it might just be plated with gold and underneath the plating might be some cheap metal, like nickel or brass. So in that way, it may mean that it has less quality. -------------------- 73|-| 1|\|\/1|\|<1|3|_3 |30063y|\/|4|\| AHEM: Chance Forums! -Reality Corp. Why are you still arguing about the gold/en ring thing? It really doesn't matter! That's not what Christmas is all about! I know it's not Christmas anymore! I know it's not even Boxing Day! -------------------- ~ørangutan I want high-bit characters in my displayed name!!! :( :( :( (Or at least an exclamtion point!) Eat pie! BADGER!
