Control exists for getting a party to reach a specific objective. If it is focused and clear what will happen is not as much of an issue. Linear focus is not an issue if it is clear from the beginning they are going from a to b to c in a clear cut fashion. Initially, you are supposed to take the princess to the temple where she is supposed to perform the ritual. Then you are take her to the palace unharmed. Princess gets kidnapped. You must rescue her and get her to the temple in time to perform the ritual. Lost Bahssikava is a good example of control. However, if the player is suddenly taken control of and forced to do something which they do not like it ceases being fun to play. This happened in Canopy at times and could be annoying. A little forewarning can take care of this problem. A scenario which is completely controlled can be no fun sometimes. At least some sidequests, or decisions should be available which can change the ending. I think there should be a great deal of freedom for the player in sidequests. At some point there should be a pivotal decision which determines what is going to happen or the scenarios get boring. one of Emerald Mountains and Canopy's failings was that there was no optional ending. Plot is essentially about character development-- for most character development to occur the character at some point in a novel (not necessarily a scenario) a character has to make an essential decision which will determine the outcome of the novel. Join the rebels, or join the empire. Learn the Slith language or ignore it. Acknowledge Legare or pretend he does not exist. (Even in a controlled scenario-- there should be some pivotal decision that effects the ending.) -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Every image from the web used in Avernum is transformed for Blades of Avernum. It can be argued it is not the original image. Plus there is no money changing hands. Furthermore, you are putting it into a game which is parody-- making the image a joke for the amusement and entertainment of others. The court would consider many of the arguments happening here a joke. It is like taking an image of Mickey Mouse or your neighbors pet cat and putting it into the game DOOM. This is perfectly legal. It may be unethical but a court would laugh at you and be amused if it was brought in front of them. You stole my image of a hot dog, shrunk it down to size and put it into a game mod which didn't make any money for the creator of the game mod. People may get incensed about someone stealing their image. It is ethical to ask people before using their stuff. But, if the image is transformed considerably or used for parody-- basically humorous entertainment it is perfectly legal. And it may be considered even more entertaining if people get MAD-- like the magazine. It would be different if it was an image or work created specifically for the game. Then it would be up to the community to make the decision and would be protected under copyright. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Must have been harry toast. Dear Buttered Toast Good day. I am Kojo Mark,a Ghanaian and the personal attorney to Late Mr H.Toast who was a national of your country. On the 21st of April 2002,my client, his wife and their only son were involved in a ghastly car accident along Accra / Kumasi express road, here in Ghana and they unfortunately lost their lives. Since then I have been making several attempts to locate any of my client's relatives but all my efforts have been unsuccessful. As a result of this i decided to track his last name over the Internet hoping to locate any member of his family or someone who could fit in.This led to my contacting you. I have contacted you to assist in repatriating the money and property left behind before they are confiscated or declared unserviceable by the Security Company where he kept a cash deposit worth $11.7M in a vault and declared as personal effects for safe keeping. The Security Company has now issued me a final notice of intent to provide his next of kin or have the deposit confiscated and handed over to the government having exceeded the agreed period of deposit. Since I have been unsuccessful in locating any one who is related to him all these while, i then decided to contact you to seek your consent to present you as the next of kin of the deceased (since you share the same surname )so that both of us can retrieve the money from the Security Company and subsequently share it. It may interest you to note that i have the necessary legal documents that will be used to backup the claim and will effect the change of ownership of this deposit in your name.I expect you will wonder how he made all this money.Well,he was dealing in Diamonds which we was sourcing from Sierra Leone and neighbouring Liberia during the period both countries were at wars. I can guarantee that this will be executed under a legitimate arrangement that will protect you and myself from any breach of the law.Infact,i can explain more of the details if you want me to. Please, you will have to get back to me as soon as possible if you might be interested so that we can discuss further. If you can give me a telephone number to reach you,fine-because it will be faster. Best regards. Kojo Mark -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Star Bright, Star Light, Oh I Wish I May, I Wish Might, Wish For One Star Tonight. I think it will require different things to get to different islands. For the easier ones it might be boats. Maybe an undersea tunnel to get to one of the harder to reach islands. Maybe a teleporter to get into one protected by magic barriers. You may have to finish quests to find the way to reach some of them. Don't know. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Star Bright, Star Light, Oh I Wish I May, I Wish Might, Wish For One Star Tonight. Hmm. Let me see. There are factories in avernum. Factories exist to mass produce monsters for the most part. The golem factory in Avernum 3 is one, the mass production of undead in Dealing With the Dead-- spawning pits, later in Lost Bahssikava we have an undead factory combined with a golem production factory. Thus factories are mainly used for magical warfare. I think mass production, science, and engineering is tightly guarded and controlled by the mage class. Thus only wizard type items are mass produced or engineered-- potions, scrolls, books, wizard towers, etc. If it is advantageous for mages to release technology, they will. I do not know if there are construction and mining golems in Avernum. There are in Geneforge, but that may be different. There are other indications of mass production for certain items. We have a daily newspaper and huge amounts of books. The alchemical shops are fairly complicated, about the equivalent of a 18th century pharmacy with all the equipment involved. The potions are all standardized. I am not sure that there is no mobility. I think there are three paths of mobility in Avernum. There is a huge self perpetuating bureaucracy in the imperium-- although it is never said-- I think you get into the bureaucracy by taking a civil service test. Thus, low level bureaucrats are not necessarily noble. However, although it is never stated-- I think bureaucracy is a dangerous and wiley profession in Avernum-- people assassinate each other to move up in rank. You have to employ thugs to collect taxes, etc. To get into magery school or alchemy school, you pay the entrance fee, I do not think mages have to be noble. Something which is interesting is that engineering is also taught in the magical towers of learning. There is a constant need for soldiers -- I think you can rise through the ranks as a soldier. These paths are pretty well set, however and may be the only way up. They would be really really dangerous professions. The top does not change that often for nobility unless you become the top person in one of the three paths. The various churches are also pretty open ended as to how they recruit people. Back to the idea of monsters and constructs. I think catapults and ballistae are replaced with golems and altered beasts. Yes, the empire does magically alter and enslave monsters for their own use. We have the laboratories where mutant giants are produced to fight in the war in Avernum. For some reason-- wizardly magic seems to cook the brains of many wizards making them into either crazy summoners-- or monster makers. Thus the rise of the Anama. I think there are two classes of altered monster most of the time. Mutant-- some kind of mutagenic agent was used on the monsters, or they come from a harsh environment. Mutant lizard, mutant giant. Altered-- the monster was reconstructed in a magical laboratory maing it tougher. Altered basilisk, etc. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I know I am double posting. The armor set is almost complete for a heavily armored knight. 1) Helm, Platemail, Greaves, Gauntlets, Boots, and Shield. There is only one piece missing-- the aventail-- armored neckguard. 2) Could someone add a body shield or a tower shield as a graphic. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. To pull a cart effectively, and be ridable, I am guessing that a giant lizard is about the same size as a small ox 4-5 feet tall. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Inconsistent dates are a sign of well done history. In the history of the Roman empire, dates were not always consistent about when things happened. Also you have different historians writing opposing texts on what happened. Some will try to put a positive spin on a particular person, or in some cases will trash them. I imagine a history of Garzahd in the time of Empress Prazac would read something like the story of Caligula written by Plutarch. The political importance of the dates would be more important than their accuracy. In imperial Roman times and Chinese times histories were mainly political documents written to tell how great the current rulers were. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I think the lizards were used to pull the merchants carts. It would be neat to see a slithy or avernite war chariot. Oh well. There are no elephants in Avernum. Mutant lizards are quick, big, and nasty. I was really hoping that there would be an armored slith on an armored giant mutant lizard. It might not be practical, but it would be cool. Think really big lizard. Elephants would be about as dangerous as a giant mutant lizard. You could even have a lizard goad. I know there is a graphic for a drake rider as well. Maybe you could use them as mounts to fly around like the orb of thralni. Again a wonderfully impractical idea. I do not think there would be catapults, ballistae or similar items; these would be replaced by magically destructive items. This is fantasy. Almost anything is possible. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Star Bright, Star Light, Oh I Wish I May, I Wish Might, Wish For One Star Tonight. Here are some thoughts on Weapons and Warfare in Avernum: 1) It appears the Sliths are the first to use cavalry in Avernum-- lizard riders. (Lost Bahssikava). This should give them an advantage in future wars-- the ability to move quickly and transport goods before the Avernites. 2) Magic Lasers are starting to be used as fixed defenses. (Canopy). There however are no large mobile weapons other than golems-- I would categorize them as remote control tanks. Factories are being made recently to produce divisions of golems. 3) Wands are starting to be used and passed out as weapons in bunches. The ending of the (Za- Khazi Run.) They may be a transitional weapon from crossbows to wands. I think of this as a transition from 15th century our time to 16th century our time when gunpowder started to be used on a large scale. 4) The standard weapon is still the sword. However, heavier hand weapons are starting to appear-- steel greatswords, battleaxes, claymores, the Vahnati waveblade is starting to spread outside of Vahnati lands. The slith spear is becoming more prevalent and more magical. Halberds are also appearing in slith hands. 5) Armor is starting to become a bit more sophisticated. (Backwater Calls)-- Steel plated helm, electrocution platemail. Ironclad bangle (Canopy), Magical Greaves (Canopy). These are some thoughts. I also have a wish list of weapons and armor I would like to see in Avernum. 1) Blunt weapons-- flail, spiked mace, maul. 2) Swords and daggers-- katana, dao, parrying dagger. 3) Helms-- Samurai Helmet, Plumed helm, Kettle hat, crusader helm. 4) Armor- Samurai armor. 5) Unusual weapons-- Bangi knife, Punch dagger-- I think this would be a Nephilim weapon. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I am going to use the classic Japanese civilization as an example. The way to the throne was through control of the imperial family. There was no such things as direct revolution-- the imperial household are considered the children of the gods. Not sure what mythical or religious status which the imperium holds. Though the sun symbol is very similar to Japan. You did this by: 1) Getting yourself proclaimed the official temple of the empire. 2) Marrying the imperial family. 3) Becoming the general of the imperial family. Thus you controlled the imperial household troops and got to choose which of the children ascended the throne. 4) Alternately you made the family of the empire-- state symbols and pensioned them off. Constitutional Monarchy. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Star Bright, Star Light, Oh I Wish I May, I Wish Might, Wish For One Star Tonight. Most good fantasy writing is on some level based on epics. Keith Laumer-- Odyssey. John Gardner-- Grendel, The Dark Tower-- Stephen King (Song of Roland). Fantasy writing is not however epic. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Star Bright, Star Light, Oh I Wish I May, I Wish Might, Wish For One Star Tonight. Not all winning strategies are damage spells. Simulacrum is perfect for boss fights:-- Simulacrum the top monster twice and watch it die fighting two of itself. Forcecage-- gives time to buff characters. Good for door blocking. Control Mind-- Another one to use against boss monsters. First haste the characters-- Then cast slow on the monsters. You get four actions to their one. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Star Bright, Star Light, Oh I Wish I May, I Wish Might, Wish For One Star Tonight. The whole point is not always fighting. There are four mage spells that make the game far easier to play. 1) Light 2) Unlock Doors 3) Dispel Barrier 4) Far Sight (level 4) to see outdoor sections. It is virtually impossible to finish every detail in most scenarios without a solid mage. Also arcane lore is usually given to a mage. This is useful for solving puzzles. Mages are not fighters. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Star Bright, Star Light, Oh I Wish I May, I Wish Might, Wish For One Star Tonight. An archer/mage nephil is just as effective as archer priest. It has worked very well for my party. Composed 1) Slith spearman/high tool use-- Divinely touched- Strong Back. Focus on anatomy, blademaster, lethal blow. 2) Human swordsman/bow. Focus on parry, riposte, quickstrike, sharpshooter. 3) Human priest/alchemist-- potions-- protection brew, curing potion, greymold salve (finishes quests in many dungeons), energy potion, energy elixir 4) Nephil archer/mage -- fast on feet, natural mage. The key to this is to have a character that can easily make energy potions and energy elixirs. Stack them up and you should not have to worry about spell points. I do not understand the aversion to energy elixirs... -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh.
