Ringworld is by Larry Niven. There are two recent additions to the series Ringworld's Children and The Ringworld Throne. Discworld is different. It is by Terry Pratchett. Not my favorite but still a good write. He learned his trade by being a public relations person for the nuclear energy industry. He says it taught him how to make tremendous lies. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I was looking at RPGCodex and I noticed that there was a beta call for the Mac for Geneforge 3. I am curious about when the beta call for windows will happen. Drooling and nashing my teeth. Crossing my eyes in anticipation. Hopping mad. Ah well... -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I care enough to realize the world has become interconnected enough where a disaster on this scale can affect our economy and health if we do not help. 500,000 injured people, huge numbers of sick and malnourished people, 130,000 dead bodies, stagnant water, and massive starvation could have a tremendous impact if we do not help. This is the setting for plague or superflu on a massive scale if there is not enough intervention. The World Health Organization has talked about this. At the minimum, water needs purification, proper medical quarantine and medical help need to occur, serious martial law, and getting people fed. Also it damages the economies of India, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Australia. If not checked, it could lead to worldwide economic depression. This would be an absolute mess. There really is no choice but to help. It is in our self interest. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. A few more recent reads. These are both good reads. It is like cyberpunk but it uses a lot of biological and ecological material as well. Mark Budz Clade, and Crache. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Star Bright, Star Light, Oh I Wish I May, I Wish Might, Wish For One Star Tonight. Is Plot Important? in Blades of Avernum | |

I think continuity and flow in a sense is more important than plot in computer roleplaying games. The ability to go from section to section in the game without losing your sense of place or ideas can be more important than plot. ( Which is most of the time sophomoric at best in all but the best games). You are after all in an interactive movie which is more action than thought. In a very good roleplaying game-- the continuity element has multiple plots which are woven together. For example there might be a series of three simple threaded outcomes. It is the ability make the threads flow seemlessly which is hard for a designer. That is why there is an excessive use of bells and whistles. When the scenario flow breaks down is most often when the bells and whistles appear. Just my thoughts. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I am enjoying Homeward Bound by Harry Turtledove. But, then I like a lot of his material. Not the alternate south novels, however. I especially liked Fox and Empire by Harry Turtledove. Another series which I liked was Curt Benjamin -- The Prince of Shadows, The Prince of Dreams, The Gates of Heaven -- The Seven Brothers series. It is excellent. Also The Shadow of the Lion and This Rough Magic by Eric Flint and Mercedes Lackey are good. I could go on and on but then it would get boring. I like historical fantasy. Robert Jordan basically is a hack. He started by writing bad conan novels then moved to verbose generic fantasies. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I can think of several uses of Nature Lore for scenarios. 1) Increased chance of finding alchemical ingredients. 2) A chance to find food. 3) A way to avoid wandering monsters. 4) Some dungeons should be hidden and only findable with nature lore. Dense overgrowth etc. 5) Some encounters should not be available unless you have nature lore. You are asked to track down a fugitive.-- Can function as a tracking skill. 6) Eventually allows pathfinder. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. If you truly like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, you will probably like Isabel Allende, The House of the Spirits. It is as good but different. Magical realism is a wonderful form of writing. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Most explorers who became famous affected large groups of people and became rich in the process. Marco Polo was not particularly violent but he did open the silk road to the Italian city states. Ibn Battuta was a traveling explorer in the real sense. However, he did use his explorations again not violent to further his political ambitions. I am including either violence, commerce, or political gain. It was very rare for explorers to just go for explorations sake. Shackleton would be one of these. I am including all types of adventurers in the real sense of the word. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I think there should be major political upheaval. The leading general of the empire marries his son to the emperors daughter effectively taking over the empire and forming a shogun style state. In Avernum, a constitutional monarchy is formed after the kings children are deemed unfit to rule by the council of mayors, etc. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. This is about the pattern an adventurer usually follows. I am thinking of real life adventurers in this case. A few of them would be Ibn Battuta, Marco Polo, Sir Richard Burton, and Cortes. There are of course others which stand out the returning military conqueror or sword saint- Musashi, and Julius Caesar. Also there is the political soldier who goes off to fight in various foreign wars-- Theodore Roosevelt and Winston Churchill. They start out young either going to fight in a foreign war or going on some sort of trade mission. They do this to either get political patronage, or establish a trade route. Generally they go somewhere and kill a lot of people either to prove their military superiority or establish a trade route. If they don't kill a lot of people they try to demonstrate their cultural superiority. Once they come home or on the adventure they try to get a military rank or a civil title. Usually this involves some kind of intrigue or patronage which then leads another adventure where they are serving a specific leader-- sultan, East India Company, Spanish Crown, etc. They go back either to spy, serve as a senior military officer, or company representative. This usually involves a lot of wandering, daring escapes Winston Churchill-- escapes from Boer camp, Sir Richard Burton-- visiting Mecca, etc. Once they are finished with this they come back to seek a title or position. Richard the Lionhearted returning from the crusades, Ibn Battuta finishing his adventures and becoming a magistrate. This usually involves some kind of intrigue and jockeying for power. There are very few scenarios based on the returning hero. Usually something is wrong at home. The end of the Odyssey is an excellent story about the returning herro. In the end if they are recognized, they write their memoirs which become classics -- Ibn Battuta, Winston Churchill, Musashi. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. If you want to read some solid conspiratorial views of the world try Ralph Epperson-- The Unseen Hand, and The New World Order -- very right wing christian but well written and intelligent. For a left version try Noam Chomsky -- What Uncle Sam Really Wants, and Manufacturing Consent; The Political Economy of the Mass Media. It will give you some things to think about. Another equally well written account about the mass media is Into The Buzz Saw: Leading Journalists Expose the Myth of the Free Press. Foreword by Gore Vidal written by Kristina Borjesson. They are interesting reading but like any of this stuff, you have to take it with a grain of salt. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I am waiting for A Feast For Crows by George R.R. Martin. It should be very good. I have started the book Lost In The Cosmos by Walker Percy-- a rather nice romp through allegorical dissimilitude and humorous thought exercises. I rather like it. The next thing on my list to read is Michael Chabon -- The Final Solution. The Aenaeid should be called the Trojan's revenge. I rather liked it. It is the sequel to the Iliad. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Star Bright, Star Light, Oh I Wish I May, I Wish Might, Wish For One Star Tonight. I just spent $10.00 for Temple of Elemental Evil which I thought was a bit too expensive. Why I would first put down $49.99 then pay an additional amount each month. Too much money for an online game. The only online game which I like right now is Kingdom of Loathing This is free and butt kicks WOW any day. Plus it limits your time and gives you time for real life. I don't want to become an Evercrack junkie or get assimilated by Angband. So there. Sex is better than games any day, unless you are German or American then you think money is better than sex. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. The ideal situation would be kind of complex. A cold war between Empire/Avernum/Vahnati. A hot war between Avernum and the dark Sliths. A hot war between the returning risen Nephilim. The risen Nephilim would release a huge "quickfire" bomb. The Nephilim being the remnants of a larger stronger Nephilim civilization from another world or dimension. Eventually the Empire/Avernum/Vahnati would have to put their differences aside to fight off the two invaders. Just my two cents. I would also like to see a larger variety of spells. Along with crafting skills, and a more extensive alchemy system. Also add a few more options to the combat system. It needs a boost. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Star Bright, Star Light, Oh I Wish I May, I Wish Might, Wish For One Star Tonight. Having finished Aesop Without Morals, The Famous Fables, and a Life of Aesop by Lloyd W. Daly, I am looking for some recommended light reading. Unfortunately, my local library does not have The Rats, Bats, and The Ugly by Dave Freer and I do not wish to buy it.
