Back to the update: What is currently in development. This is a summary. It is all up in the clouds and I am waiting for another scenario to pop out of the toaster. Can't wait. Since I last checked Bahssikava, Canopy, and Backwater Calls came out. The Darkness by Kelandon is in beta right now. There were others in development: Dahak-- Longshanks Retr-O-- Saint Brevity and the Oochie squad Supanik-- The Yedda Prophecy and Hope Overwhelming-- Roussa Solodric-- Archmage Ascension Hawk King- The Way of the Guild Phish Phlot, Poit, Venom, Jade Wolf, Aliklik and Killercrono were working on unspecified works. Spineraker might be working on something-- guessing on this one. Jonah Zolohahni-- might be starting another one. (corrected) Terrors Martyr-- requesting graphics for new scenario. Lynkfox-- mentioned was working on mob graphics for a new scenario with his girlfriend. ALso trying to figure out how to limit magic. It is very bizarre. Wolfowitz has no experience in banking. Bolton hates the United Nations. The positions being filled seem to be more based on ideology than qualifications. What is more strange to me is the sudden pronouncements made by Bush every time an international event occurs-- there is instant PR spin. Lebanese protest-- we support the Lebanese, etc. Every choice is a giant media event. Why? -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. This one is very hard to call... Wolfowitz is not in the military anymore ( a very good thing) . It might be a lot different than we would expect... It could be better, but then it could be a true disaster. At least we can expect that something will be done if only band aid measures. Wolfowitz is not likely to sit on his hands. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. I have to recommend Lives of the Twelve Caesars by Suetonius. The sections on Nero and Caligula are quite amusing. The idea behind Basic or Galactic is that there are a common set of sounds which all humanoids can produce. It is designed to be a universal language of diplomacy, trade, and war. For some reason-- the primary language has become a kind of basic. Each humanoid species may have their own language-- but almost all species speak a common trade language. I am not sure it would be possible for example for a Nephilim to effectively speak the mother tongue of the Slithzeraki very well. Understand the written language yes, but speak certain humanoid languages no. I think that Slith and Nephilim may hear in the higer and lower frequencies than humans. Also a human would not be able to hiss like a slith or roar like a nephil. Some parties are composed entirely of Slith or Nephil. I do not think that they are necessarily speaking human when talking in the scenarios... Back on subject with other realms. A few things. 1) Morog sends you to the deep caves. A kind of super deadly realm. 2) In A Perfect Forest-- you visit what appears to be a Nephilim space craft. There is a map of a globe and a pair of Cosmos Gloves. There is some indication that the Nephilim are not originally from Avernum. Edit: I think this is Nephilim because the key to use the teleporter to get into the ship is found on an undead Nephilim. 3) The Vahnati are not sure where they came from originally. 4) The only prehistoric ruins are of the Unicorns and the Ursagi. There are no truly ancient ruins in Avernum. 5) In a strange way, Avernum reminds me of both Darkover-- Marion Zimmer Bradley, and Witch World-- Andre Norton. Clingfire in Darkover is similar to quickfire. 6) All of the humanoids speak the same language. This may sound funny, but there is an idea of a language called basic or galactic-- it is based on the common sounds which humanoids are able to make. 7) Cats and lizards have different vocal structures than humans. Thus the common language of Avernum would have to be artificial or come from an ancient united civilization. There are ruins of a super civilization in both Slith, and Nephilim lands. 8) There is no indication of how humans or terrans got to Avernum. I think at some point there was an entrance gate or ship sent to Avernum and it got lost somehow. Humans lost or forgot their original technologies or they did not work and had to adapt to a new set of physical laws-- magic. 9) Human civilization suddenly expanded from a single point with no rival groups except for other humanoids and rebels. Just my thoughts. [ Saturday, March 19, 2005 16:21: Message edited by: Lord Baron Von Toast ] -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Four party members spreads out the experience. I think there is a maximum level of 100 for monsters. Not sure about this. Thus I think with the monster level limits your party may only be able to reach lvl 150 with four characters. It is going to be the one with the most promotional value. He is probably going to announce the winners in various places and talk about choosing the best one. Thus he generates more sales with the contest. Definitely do the Perl contest. It is good to generate more scenarios. Also it would give some practice for the larger contest. ;) [ Friday, March 18, 2005 17:25: Message edited by: Lord Baron Von Toast ] -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. You mean like the books of mad libs which you used to play when you were a kid. Have an out line of a map and people would send in different pieces on the map. Lets say you have 15 locations on the map. Fortress, town, etc. Each person would do a piece at a set level. Then you would put it into the scenario. Kind of a giant incomprehensible mess. :P Make the scenario completely open ended. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. This would not work... I tried to do a scenario design contest in 2 weeks... it didn't work as expected... there were 2 excellent entries... Emerald Mountain-- by Terrors Martyr and Death at Chapman's by Eric Westra. They are both winners in my eyes because they could code decent scenarios in such a short time. Erik Westra wrote the Cook Book and Terrors Martyr has the most scenarios out. Three weeks might work, but not 2. I don't want to embarrass myself on this one. I think that I would try to get a committment by 4-6 people before contest started-- for a fast contest. Name-- Synopsis. Parameters. This way you could track progress on how making the scenarios were going. Create a specific thread in the Lyceum and the Blades of Avernum section. Kind of like a running online journal. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Star Bright, Star Light, Oh I Wish I May, I Wish Might, Wish For One Star Tonight. Otherness-- higher planes, hidden cities, etc. There are several higher (or lower) realms which are mentioned in Avernum. The Efreeti in Za Khazi Run says he is from the land of Efreeti-- I am not sure if it is called The City of Brass. Demons come from hell. The Land of the Dead is mentioned. Canopy is set in another realm. What are the different other realms you have found in Avernum? I would imagine with three different races there should be some interesting ones. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. Slip in a few items that can only be found in the HLPM-- nothing powerful, just unusual. I know this is supposed to be an editor, but it might be interesting to see a few unique items here and there. One of the items that can only be found in the HLPM not the scenarios so far is Polished Platemail. Another is Micah's Gloves. Nothing quite so powerful, however. Something which I would like to see is more terrain and field effects. There already is a pretty good variety. Basically create a type of terrain or field for each effect in Avernum. Some which are not covered. Terrain Sleeping gas Acidic ground Mud-- slows party Unholy ground-- curses party Monster Fields Umberhulk-- confusion field Brain Beast-- mind control field Angel-- blessing field etc. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. It is a good idea to drink some Gremlin Merlot with your deli sandwich before you rest to recharge your spells and hit points. It does not help you with fights though. :P -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh. In Death At Chapman's the mage turns into a wraithe at least graphically. It would just be a graphic switch. This has been done several times -- in Backwater calls-- the statues turn into Demon Golems, also the rocks transform into Eye Beasts. I think this could be done easily-- villagers turning into demons could easily be done. -------------------- Wasting your time and mine looking for a good laugh.
