Alright, time to flex your crypto-literary muscles. If you know of any humanoid species in mythology, post 'em along with where they typically appear in the same.

Ahem, query was a bit ambiguous - I was looking for both source and geographical location (an example of the two being separate being the Norse, who put all sorts of nasty humanoids around the Baltic states).

Mermaids

------------------------------------------------
"Irish say that they are old pagan women transformed to mermaid shape and banished by St. Patrick. Folktales say that mermaids are the Pharoh's children drowned in the Red Sea. Babylonians worshiped Oannes or Ea (sea gods). These sea gods were depicted in ancient art as men with a fish tail as legs."

(I don't know if you want anything from The Dreamlands.)

In case you do:

Gnorri--> Cerenarian Sea. (close to Ilek-Vad)

--

The Hyperboreans--> In Hyperborea, though through wars, conquers and migrations they lived in diferent places.

The Lords of Venus--> (though from Venus were said to live here during the Hyperborea era.) aka The Serpent People. Some say their degenerate descendants (sometimes through coitus with humans) were inspiration for the myths of faeries.

Lizard Men of S'lithik Hhai--> S'lithik Hhai (capital of the kingdom of the Serpent People, Hyperborea))

Lemurian Men--> Lemuria (perhaps around where Madagascar is today) Somewhere in the Indian Ocean?

Byakhee--> Live near Aldebaran, but have often been summoned throughout the aeons (perhaps more of a servant race, spacially of Hastur.)

When people believed that the earth is flat, they believed also that Skiapodes would live in the antipodes (south of Africa). Skiapodes were one-legged men, running very fast by doing big leaps with their big feet.

(America, presumably in the forests of New Jersy. How "Humanoid" it is depends on the interpretation)

Damond
(Greeko, possibly (or even more likely) pagan idea where the term "demon" is said to have originated from. Originally a benign entity I belive)

Yowie-
Australian version of Sasquatch and similar creatures
For some reason had a childrens chocalte treat thingy named after it.

Dryads-Celtic i think.

I was going to say the Loch ness monster, but it might not look like a person. On the other hand, it might just be a kid with a shark fin strapped to his back.

Jack Vance's Ska from Scandinavia. They can be read in his brilliant Lyonesse trilogy.

(actually, many books by him showcase fantastic humanoids.)

Dryads were wood nymphs in greek myth. They were beautiful minor goddesses and lived a very long time, though they were not immortal.

Hamadryads, also from greek myth, were dryads whose lives were tied with their trees. A hamadryad's life ended when her tree died.

There were also other types of nymphs such as the oceanids, or sea nymphs.

Nagas are from South America primarily, though they do have a close Asian variant, whose name I forget.

Werewolves have at least two known origins, Animistic Native North Americans believed it to be a blessing, and some German and French legends have werewolves as demon/wolf offspring.

actually, crytozooologists believe they have found la chupacabra, whose legends originated in southern Mexico in teh early '90s. A coyote with a variant of mange desease seems to have been to culprit, and more such coyotes have been foudn since. This matches with the earliest descriptions of la chupacabra, which were a dog with the skin of a fish. The first sighting a herder caught it eating a goat, and scared it off to find that only his goats stomach had been eaten, which gave lead to the stories of it sucking the animals blood, or eating only their guts, the two main variants.
