Santa-i think was some pilgrim god then western culture changed it to some queer guy in a red sed that delivers presents to little kids. -------------------- When you think you can't get any lower in life and hit rock bottom, God hands you a shovel. quote:Or, more accurately, the thing that took over his form. See "Neverland Ranch Investigators Discover Corpse of Real Michael Jackson": http://www.theonion.com/news/index.php?issue=4104 ;) quote:Oceanids were cloud/rain nymphs. Don't let the name confuse you. The Nereids were sea nymphs. quote:Um, sorry, no. Nagas are definitely from Asia (which is a wide area, but they are tied to Buddhism I believe, which spread fairly far). I'm not sure what you are thinking of. The generally motif is somewhat common, so you can find half human/half snake types in many cultures, but Nagas most certainly are not from South America. quote:I can only assume that's a typo for "pagan god." The pilgrim's god was the Judeo-Christian god, better known around most parts of the Western world as just plain God. A strong argument could be made that Santa originally came from a figure like Odin, but whether that's true or not there's no way he can be considered a "humanoid species." And I'm not going back any further on the posts to correct mistakes because it would take too long. Posts: 62 | Registered: Thursday, January 20 2005 08:00 |

I have this book about mythological creatures, and under "Naga" it says < The naga is a many headed serpent deity, found largely in the legend of India and Southeast Asia. It may be depicted with human torso and serpent heads. Nagas control the rains and are in constant conflict with Garuda, the bird of the sun. This enmity reflects in myth the real balance between sun and rain, which are both essiantial for the fertility of the soil.> I have copied that word for word and it's in a book of facts, so I believe it. :D -------------------- How many shapers are there? Why is Drypeak controlled by Zakary? Why is Barzahl a Guardian? How does the Geneforge work? What's as small as nothing? Nickels and kobolds - Greek semi-evil spirits, sort of like imps or goblins. Location: pretty much everywhere, but mainly greece. They got elements on the periodic table named after them. -------------------- ~Note : The professional newbie's advice should not be taken seriously, or at all.~ LINKAGE Posts: 364 | Registered: Saturday, January 17 2004 08:00 |

Uh... because they were miners? Castle of the Winds depicts the Kobolds as miners. quote:Dryads were forest nymphs. They are not known as well women. Naiads were the nymphs for shallow water, so those would be the well women in Britain if there were a direct link... but there probably isn't as the concepts were almost certainly formed separately. Hamadryads were just a specific kind of dryad, not a separate creature. All nymphs (which includes the dryads, hamadryads, naiads, nerieds, oceanids and others) were female. Nymph literally means "girl" so there were no boy nymphs. Posts: 62 | Registered: Thursday, January 20 2005 08:00 |

I think no one mentioned maenads yet (do they qualify?). If I remember correctly, they were the followers of Dyonisos (Greek god of wine/celebration). Edit: I imagine that maenads and fauns are roughly equivalent, the latter being male and the former female. Do they share the same mythology? There are also fauns, from Greek/Roman mythology. They had goat hooves and played the pan flute and were like Dionysus and Bacchus in humanoid form. -------------------- "At times discretion should be thrown aside, and with the foolish we should play the fool." - Menander ==== Drakefyre's Demesne - Happy Happy Joy Joy desperance.net - We're Everywhere ==== You can take my Mac when you pry my cold, dead fingers off the mouse!
