Coin Cap at 30k? in Avernum 4

Ok, let's think about it. A US penny is 2.5g (source), and that's a fairly small coin. 30000 of those would therefore be 75kg, or 165 pounds. Do you really think your adventurers want to carry around more than that? It should at least have encumbering effects, if you allow unlimited amounts of currency. (ok, higher value coins would mitigate this some, but perhaps that's factored in already)

Still, what do you need more than 30000 coins for? Nothing costs that much, and training is a great way to use coins. You're not going to use the money anywhere else, really.

I really don't want this to degenerate into a flamewar, so I'll be careful here, and advise others to do the same. Disclaimer: I am a Mac person, and I don't know that much about the other side of the fence.

I'm not sure how a current Mac compares to a similarly equipped Core Duo-based system from another manufacturer (which is probably what you're talking about), but I do know that on a Mac some software runs faster on Windows (through Boot Camp) than natively on OS X, and sometimes it's the other way around. This is likely because of differing amounts of optimization, though operating system efficiency might come into play. It is interesting that we can now compare OS X and Windows on the same machine, and this may provide insight into the speed of the inner workings of the systems.

I like the idea of an Apple logo placebo effect. However, maybe it's more sinister than that: Steve Jobs places a piece of his soul inside every logo, and his legendary mercurial management technique scares the hardware into performing better. Separate components actually influence each other to work harder, since the logic board (for example) won't have much fun if the power supply gets fired.

I guess we could test this effect by using those stickers that they give you with a new Mac; however, they're likely to be less potent, and may simply employ mind control to influence viewers to buy more Macs. Ack, now I'm thinking of an RPG where there are magic Apple logos enchanted with special properties: rainbow grants an armor bonus (or maybe the metallic on the tank-like G5 tower should do that..), an Aqua bubble logo allows the user to walk on water, and so on.

Hm, I seem to have wandered rather far from whatever I meant to say when I started this post. Perhaps I should stop now.

What style of graphics would you like to see in Avernum 5? in General

I think elevation and lighting, if implemented, would add a lot to the A4 engine. If I recall correctly, Jeff has said he plans to work on those, as well as produce more PC graphics. Given that he's unlikely to give up on this engine right after working hard on developing it, this is probably our best chance. I like the Avernum Trilogy's graphics, of course, because A1 was my first Spiderweb game, and there's certainly some nostalgia relating to those. However, I doubt that there will be such a reversal for A5.

Divals: A lot of the A4 character graphics are 3D, in fact. My chitrachs were completely made in Blender, for example, and many of the originals are from Poser.

I suppose I should take it some time. I really don't know how I'd turn out on the law/chaos front, as I can see elements of each in me. I think it would be highly dependent on close choices in that section, and I could engineer reasonable answer sets to go either way. Maybe not, though.

Fireblast Spell? in Avernum 4
Shock Trooper

I'm pretty sure I trained in Fireblast in either the Tower or the Castle. Probably the Castle, since it was somewhat more recent, though I don't really use the spell that often.

quote:
From the manual:

Arcane Blow (Min. Mage Spells skill 17, Costs 25 spell energy)
...
Divine Host (Min. Priest Spells skill 17, Costs 25 spell energy)

These are the top spells in each division. Note that there's probably equipment that you can use to mildly increase your *Spells skills, so you won't need to train all the way to 17.

Hmm, my average posts per day looks to be about 0.133. Granted, there have been several-year periods where I haven't touched this place, so during my semi-active phase the ratio would be higher. Still, I'm just not a very vocal person.

According to the scripts, the "surrounds you with static" ability is a debuffing ability. I'm pretty sure that it reduces the duration, but it might also reduce the power of the effect.

You know, I first thought this meant that you were curious about the experience of death in real life, due to your familiarity with it in the MMORPG world. In some way, you figured that you'd just lose some experience or something and respawn at the nearest friendly town.

I was somewhat concerned for your sanity. ;)

Indian Doctor Jailed For Agreeing To Abort Female Fetus in General

2) Like Alo said, the skewed male-to-female ratios would present a problem for the nation/culture a generation later.

Well, in the current Indian society it's clear that boys are more economically valuable than girls, because this type of bias occurs. This doesn't mean that this is how it should be, of course, and it's clearly an unbalanced situation.

Although the ratio is shifting, at some point it's bound to halt even if nothing is changed, since (in effect) scarcity will drive the value of girls up to match that of boys. However, this would entail a fairly large cultural shift, which nonetheless may be necessary for any positive change.

opinions on Avernum IV in Avernum 4

Jeff has said that that was one thing he tried to do in A4:
quote:
From the manual:
I have ruthlessly pared away all of the stuff that caused
busywork and confusion without adding fun.

This has been a highly disputed decision, and many people feel that some of the eliminated stuff was in fact fun. It does seem weird that I can train while in the middle of a hostile dungeon, for example.

Also, given the graphical upgrades such as animation, new sprites needed to be made; however, it would be possible to use the old ones with the new engine. In fact, that would be fairly easy to do, as long as you don't care about animation. Apparently, Jeff likes the new style graphics and animation better, or at least think that they will sell better. Although he may care about his game worlds and tradition, fundamentally he's trying to feed his family, and that's how things are going to work.

I suppose I could start working on some interesting monsters from the past, if I have some free time. Any suggestions?

You may not have noticed them; they should be hanging around the north side of Mertis, not in any buildings, just out in the fields. They may look like random farmers, which is probably why you missed them.

Of course, something more serious may have happened, and they could be dead. I doubt it, though.

On some dead guy in the Eastern Gallery. Other people will have more precise info, but I think it's in the southern half. This is outside the demo area, by the way.

I think you can get the reward without doing the mission; you just have to be able to dispel a barrier and fight a hasted Vengeful Shade, which I did while in the demo.

Get a better price for sold goods? in Avernum 4
Shock Trooper

It will only prevent rounding from working against you, I think. The difference should be fairly small.

For example, if something's worth 5 coins, you can sell it for 1. If you sell 4 separately, you'll get 4 coins. However, if you sell 4 of them together, they'll be worth 20 coins, so you get 5 coins. I guess it could add up to something reasonable over time, but for me I think it's just too much of a hassle for the gain. Obsessive maximizers (not that it's bad to be one; I pick up goblets when I find them) may disagree.
