The plot and world of each Avernum game is basically the same as the corresponding Exile game, but the combat system and magic is completely different. Try both if you have the time, and see which you prefer. Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

What? Surely, dareva, you did not mean to suggest that women may be less than completely honest and forthright in communicating with men? Oh, wait, of course you did. That's why I told all the guys to keep quiet in the first place. Regarding men and skirts, I'd just like to point out that the seam in a standard pair of trousers is situated in a place where its potential to cause male discomfort is maximised. Did they pay you to say that? You sound like an advertisement. And while cheap web hosting is certainly nice, I'd be profoundly worried by the mentality of anyone who was sexually aroused by it. Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Or maybe they just called us monkeys because to them we look and act like monkeys? I mean, when you call a person a stubborn old mule you can't literally mean they're descended from mules, since mules are sterile. :P Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

The paradox is that by the time you decide on what to take the prediction has already been made, so your decision can't possibly affect what's in the boxes; therefore, since the boxes already have in them whatever's in them, you may as well take both. I'm almost certain c--t is either from Old Norse or Old English. Anyway, the reason all these words are offensive is that they're not derived from French or Latin, and were thus viewed as vulgar -- their shift to taboo status probably roughly followed the shift in the meaning of the word "vulgar" itself from "common" to "offensive". I have no sympathy for the amount of tax people earning over 100,000 USD pay. My parents raised three kids on a salary of barely a third that amount. Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

I knew someone who'd been diagnosed with Asperger's once, and who clearly had something genuinely wrong with him. I'd say his most obvious defining characteristic, and what set him apart from ordinary antisocial obsessive-compulsive introverts, was being seemingly unable to stop talking about his obsessions, even to people who clearly weren't interested. I mean, the guy just couldn't take a hint -- even when everyone was telling him to shut up and go away he just ignored them and kept on talking. He was a nice enough guy, I guess, but not right in the head at all. Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

I'm no Windows expert, but I like to think I'm good with ugly workarounds to problems. What happens if you play for 30 minutes, quit and then reopen the game, play for another 30 minutes, quit, etc? Sure, doing that's still a pain, but if it works it'll be less of one than rebooting almost as often would be. And if it doesn't work, well, at least the fact that it doesn't work might give some hint as to what the problem might be. Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Yes. UBB has a very nice (if commonly abused) poll feature, but not much else. I'd go for Invision over phpBB. phpBB is a counterintuitive nightmare to administrate. [ Wednesday, February 11, 2004 23:50: Message edited by: Thuryl ] Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

The umbilical cord one has a grain of truth in it: blood from the umbilical cord is full of stem cells, and can be used in place of bone marrow for transplants. Ostriches don't stick their heads in the sand at all; they were once reported to lay their heads down against the ground when threatened, but I've heard that even this is untrue. The one about only rabbits and parrots being able to see behind themselves without turning their heads is false too; some insects with compound eyes can definitely see a significant angle behind themselves, and I'm pretty sure there are other herbivores with eyes set in the sides of their heads that can see behind themselves too. Sheep don't shrink when it rains because their skin secretes oils to protect their wool. Dog food companies do in fact hire people to taste their products. I'm sure there's a good reason for this, but let's not think too deeply about it. And I'm pretty sure decimation was a punishment for deserters, not for the enemy. What he's saying is that he believes Asians tend to be discriminated against by employers and college admissions boards, because expectations of them are higher. Think of it as AA in reverse.
