Encumbrance Av2 in The Avernum Trilogy

I'm pretty sure that putting points into the Hardiness stat will reduce your effective encumbrance. (In A3, the stat that reduced encumbrance was Hardiness, but in BoA, it was Defence, so if Hardiness doesn't work then try Defence instead.)

Both times you observed the problem, it was after loading a quicksave? Hmm. I never use Quicksave, so maybe that's where the problem lies. Unlikely, but possible.

What did happen? It's possible to convince her to surrender if you picked the right conversation options earlier in the game. (Although if you've been consistently belligerent, you have to kill her.)

One omission from Synergy's list: two Eyestalks. There are two people who will send you on quests for eyestalks, and both give pretty good rewards. (Fortunately, there are eyebeasts relatively close to both of the people who give you those quests.)

And of course, you can always give the Pearlescent Band to an archer (if you have more than one, or if you don't already have the Farsight Band).

It's a joke, based on the fact that in order to be able to use First Aid to heal yourself, you first have to kill monsters.

Explaining humour ruins it, you know.

Lightning Spray isn't as unpredictable as it seems, by the way. It hits the target you select, plus up to two other targets, each of which is no more than 2 spaces away from the original target. It's only when there are more than two other hostiles within 2 spaces of the original target that it gets harder to tell who it will hit.

Because there comes a point at which there isn't really anything much more to be said about the original topic, and the new topic is more interesting.

Glad to oblige.

My party consists of a swordsman, two archer/priests and a mage/priest. I really don't think mages are that effective in BoA, so I only keep one in my party (for summoning and unlocking doors and things) and prefer to let my priests use missile weapons for offence. I usually give my archer/priests slings rather than bows, because managing ammo is a pain (and Adlerauge is cheating).

Oh, and I give everyone two disadvantages, just because it's fun to rocket up by ridiculous numbers of levels. This party went from level 25 at the start of Bahssikava to level 75 by the end.

One problem with my party is that I don't usually give anyone high Tool Use skill, because most scenarios currently out there (with the exception of Jeff's) don't require it. Making a significant investment in Tool Use would require substantially reducing the effectiveness of one of my characters.

How do I install Avernum 4? in Tech Support

Installation really shouldn't be difficult. Download the installer program, decompress the installer program (your computer probably comes with Stuffit Expander, in which case you can just double-click the compressed file, or your browser may even open the decompression utility automatically), open the installer program, follow the prompts, install the game to whatever directory you like, play the game. I can't imagine how you could possibly cause any serious damage in any of these steps, so don't be afraid that you'll mess something up. If you have further questions about any of these steps in particular, ask away.

If your problem is that you keep hitting her when her health bar is almost all red and she still doesn't die, that's normal. You can only kill her after she's started a second conversation with you, which takes a minimum of a few rounds (there are a few scripted events on a timer that have to happen first).

Gold bars aren't important -- there's one place where you can make some armour with them, but the armour isn't that great anyway. You should keep focusing crystals, and also keep at least a little fine steel (although again, most of the stuff you can make with fine steel isn't great, and can be found elsewhere anyway).

Definitely keep all herbs -- you can eventually find someone who will use them to make Knowledge Brews, which give you skill points. Until you do, hang on to them.

Also, store 20 bags of meal and 20 bottles of wine somewhere that you'll be able to easily access later. You'll need them for a quest, and you really don't want to have to scrounge that many items. (There are a few other quests that you have to find some mundane items for, but most of them are pretty easy so there's no real need to save up items for them in advance.)

I just opened my most recent savefile (at the very end of the game), and sure enough the difficulty was still correctly set to Torment. I hadn't touched the difficulty settings since the start of the game. So if it does occur randomly, it can't occur very often -- or it might be triggered by opening the preferences window or something, which I also don't do very often.

Yes, it's spelled Bahssikava. I find it easy to remember how it's spelled, because it reminds me of baklava. Mmm, baklava.

Isn't that a little like punching someone in the face and then telling them you don't want to start a fight?

Alint: checking files in Blades of Avernum Editor

I take it you're still trying to run the command-line version? That's not a main menu; that's an explanation of how to use the program. When you try to run the program, instead of just typing alint, you have to follow the name of the program with a set of parameters, including the name of the file you want to check. So, for example, typing alint dungeon.txt would check the file named dungeon.txt (assuming it was in the same directory as alint).

Not true. People have actually swapped publicly displayed names with each other before, so it is possible for different people to use the same name. On the other hand, sometimes people who have changed their names have never been allowed to change back to their old name.

Conclusion: UBB is messed up.

It could be that you killed it already and didn't notice. Look around for dropped stones.

Also, there's only about a 1 in 3 chance that it'll be in the zone each time you enter it, so if you don't find it the first time you look, keep coming back.

Is this a scenario or a prog rock band?

Technically, Hopelandic isn't really a conlang. To be a conlang, its vocabulary would have to have a defined meaning. :P
