Avernum:4 vs Blades Of Avernum which is the best? in Avernum 4

Someone's actually written a paper about how people tend to use different kinds of non-lexical sound in different social situations. It's quite interesting, although most of its findings aren't altogether surprising.

Slings, dude. Slings.

Sure, their damage is a little on the low side, but if you have two slingers in your party you're still outputting more damage per round than one archer. Unless you're a cad and decide to use Adlerauge, in which case you don't have to worry about ammo anyway.

Oh, and magic only "always hits" when you're not fighting an enemy with ludicrously high resistance to elemental attacks. Good luck winning Bahssikava's final battle without an archer, for example. :P

(Admittedly, there are also a few things that are immune to physical damage. That's why it's nice to have a mage around, even if I don't use his attack spells under normal circumstances.)

Oh, and I'll grant you one more thing -- mages are fairly effective at low levels, when fighters are still unreliable and a couple of castings of Ice Lances can wipe out most things. At high levels, they become increasingly disappointing.

Well, if your mages have Natural Mage, you can armour them up all you like without fear. If not, though, then you should make sure that you're not encumbered.

The only status effect Prismatic Shield gives is elemental resistance, which Arcane Shield also gives, so if the former does in fact reduce the chance of being frozen, so should the latter.

The weakening actually happens at the point when the undead takes its turn, though.

Who else hates the job board? in Avernum 4

Another thing that annoys me about the job boards is that many jobs don't appear until other things have happened, so if you want to finish every quest in the game you have to keep checking all the job boards regularly.

He's right. That line should read:

if (get_flag(get_memory_cell(0),get_memory_cell(1)) == 1) {

That could easily be causing an error that's reported as being in line 58; BoA isn't good at working out the line number of an error due to a missing right parenthesis.

Damaging spells in BoA cost ridiculously high amounts of spell energy relative to the amount of energy that a spellcaster can reasonably have, so I never use them. I like to be able to dish out damage until the cows come home without worrying about running out of energy, so mages don't suit my playing style. I mean, if even when you're at a high level you can only cast 10 Fireblasts or so before your spell energy runs out, what's the point?

Exactly. Because if you divide 569 by 10, it divides 56 times and the remainder is 9. So 569 % 10 = 9.

(And 569 % 100 = 69.)

How is the party supposed to know what it says, or do you learn the language at some point?
The party is supposed to be the same party that finished Bahssikava. In that scenario, you were supposed to learn the ancient Slithzerikai language. (It was possible not to do so, but you missed a lot of the plot if you did.)

Anything % 10 is just the last digit of the number, and anything % 100 is the last two digits.

(i - (i % 100)) is i rounded down to a multiple of 100. Should come in handy if you're doing what I think you're doing (although actually, I think BoA always rounds down when doing division, so it isn't necessary to round manually if you're then going to be dividing by 100 anyway).

Nope, no added benefit. Arcane Shield is the only spell in the game that gives mental shielding, though. (Except for Mindshield, which is in scroll form only.)

What he means is that in A4, you need to have 5 action points in order to even try to attack, rather than an attack using up 4 action points if you had that many, or whatever you had if you didn't, but successfully attacking anyway.

In other words, in A4 you need at least 10 AP to attack twice, whereas in A3 you only needed 5. (And in A3, if you only had 1 AP, you could still attack or use an item. In A4, if you're encumbered down to 1 AP, you can't do anything except move one space.)

(And actually, in previous games, an attack cost 4 AP, not 5.)

From the tunnels that lead to Rentar-Ihrno's final fortress, head south instead of north. If you haven't been there, you've missed a major subquest.

"Like", in some contexts, is practically a non-lexical utterance by now.
