No, no. The zone thing is just an explanation of how scenario size is counted. So if you have a scenario with 16 towns, you have to have at least 5 outdoor sections if you want to enter it into the Large Scenario category, or 1-4 outdoor sections if you want to enter it into the Small Scenario category. But if you're entering into the Newcomer category, it doesn't matter anyway.

About the Tests in Avernum 4

No, it's not the stone circle. The second test is in a cave some distance to the north of Formello. All of the testing chambers are in caves, and they're usually blocked by a magic barrier. There are six tests in all; passing each of them gives you a clue as to the location of the next.

And now I've ruined the humour by explaining it. :(

Uh, where does one get a list of what all these things do? I think Wikipedia's page fails me here. It doesn't list every possible four-number hex combination, and there are definitely some that work that aren't listed.

Tremble, mortal, before the might of Unicode.

As regards #2, although A4 has no character editor, it does have a Geneforge-style cheat menu.

(Yes, I agree that it's inferior to a character editor. It's still better than nothing.)

There's a worm somewhere that does that too. It's significantly more annoying, since some of the worms can use elemental attacks for relatively large amounts of damage.

We do read the forums, you know. Posting here is as good as asking us.

Anyway, obviously Photoshop is a good choice, but it's expensive and might be overkill for making small BoA-style graphics. An ordinary paint program (preferably one that can "zoom in" to edit individual pixels) should be adequate if you just want to do minor edits to existing graphics (and it's surprising how much editing can accomplish if you're good at it).

Demons or no, that's incredibly lame. I mean, what's a villain like that going to say to the party- "Fwuahahahaha!"? (Not that the villain has to spill his motives, but most villains should at least have some.)

All y'all realise that the thing about Alorael being 54 years old is just a running joke, right?

Well, at this point, not so much "running" as "limping".

Yes; other people have reported this problem before. If nobody's done so already, someone should probably send a report to spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com so that Jeff Vogel knows about this and can fix it for the next update.

Given how many other people have experienced the issue, I'd hope someone's bothered to tell him already. If you want to be sure, though, you can rattle off an email to spidweb@spiderwebsoftware.com

Or maybe those stats were compiled shortly after that one Spiderweb game was ported to Linux.

Actually, my Linux-using friend tells me that the Windows version of Exile 3 runs better under Windows "emulation" on Linux (I shouldn't call it that, since WINE isn't really an emulator) than the native Linux version does under Linux. Apparently this is because the Linux port of E3 was really shoddily done.

And now some final questions:

How can I make accents on non-vowels? I have tried all kinds of things, but it can't be done in microsoft word, i think. Do you know of any way of doing that?

Well, since most accented non-vowels are non-ASCII characters, the first thing you need is a font that supports them. After that you should be able to use your word processor's Insert Characters option to put them in.

They probably won't display properly in a post on these forums anyway, though. Sorry.

If you'd played enough of Alcritas's BoE scenarios, you'd eventually get sick of pixies as well. :P

There are no Bolt of Fire tomes anywhere in the game. (Or if there are, then I've missed them, and I don't think I have.) You'll have to make do with the level of Bolt of Fire you currently have.

If it's any consolation, spell levels really don't make much difference in Avernum 4.

Okay. Just to be clear, you're playing the scenario Valley of Dying Things, right? For future reference, it's good form to tell us what scenario you're playing, so that we at least know what we're trying to help you with.

Are you in the control room in the Major Waste Repository? If so, then before you can do anything there, first you have to go to another control room at the very bottom of the school and turn the power on. Enter the Lower School and keep heading down.

Why on earth would one not just make it unambiguous by making it 20-21 and 22-23? If someone who's 22 isn't supposed to pick 20-22, then why call it 20-22 instead of 20-21?

Having used both an archer and a thrower throughout the entire game, I really can't support this claim. I just ran through the final battle again as a test -- my archer with the Ebony Bow generally did 15-25 damage to Rentar, while my thrower with Fine Razordisks did 20-30. My archer had 6 Dex, 18 Bows and 13 Sharpshooter, while my thrower had 6 Dex, 15 Thrown and 10 Sharpshooter -- in other words, my thrower managed to do consistently higher damage despite significantly lower skills. I'd say that's pretty convincing.

Also, you can (and should) give bows even to characters with no Dexterity or training with bows. They'll still hit and do a fair amount of damage reasonably often.
True enough. My mage got the Shockwave Bow once I found it so that he'd have something to do when he wanted to conserve spell points, and eventually I even gave him a few points in Bows so that he could finally hit the broad side of a barn.

And of course, if you have nothing better to do with it, Eliavri's Bow is worth putting on a fighter just for the +2 Quick Action.
