The deadline for the 8th scenario design contest will be November 30, 2006. Both Blades of Avernum and Blades of Exile entries will be permitted. The only requirement is that the entrant scenario cannot have been entered in any previous scenario design contest.

Categories will be as follows:

Small Scenario -- Contains 20 zones or less
Large Scenario -- Contains more than 20 zones
Newcomer -- Contains scenarios from authors who have not yet participated in ANY general scenario contests. You may, of course, only have one entry in this category.

Best Utility -- Applications developed to either assist in scenario design or enhance the playability of BoX. These need not be the form of an actual BoX "scenario" and may be any be any computer based tool. Utilities are completely separate form the scenario categories and as such may not move on to the Best Scenario round.

Best Scenario -- The top scenarios in each category (except best utility) will move on to a final round and be judged against each other to determine the best scenario. See discussion below on the selection rules.

The total number of zones is equivalent to the sum of used towns and used outdoor sections. Duplicate versions of the same town or outdoor section (think of towns that progressively got destroyed in A3) count for 1/2 a zone; the original still counts as one.

The dividing number 20 is subject to change by the make up of the entries to ensure that the categories have a roughly equivalent (if prudent) amount of entries.

Scenarios will be ranked on a scale of 1 to 10; 1 being lowest and 10 being highest. The scenario with the highest cumulative score in that category will move on to the best scenario round as well as any scenarios with a score 80% or higher of the highest score. Suppose a scenario scores a perfect 10 in a category; that means any scenario with a score of 8 or higherin that same category is eligible for the best scenario category.

Means of submission, judging, and prizes will be handled at a later date. Hopefully Spiderweb Software will feel generous enough to give out prizes to the winners. Comments?

As I said, that will be discussed and decided as the deadline approaches. I just wanted to get the announcement out that this thing will indeed be happening.

Sounds fine. Is this recognised by Spiderweb or is it a Lyceum thing?

This is a Blades Community thing, i.e. represented by you, me, and all the other players and designers. Spiderweb Software is not an official sponsor of this contest, at least not currently.

I think I´ll be with you! I got many not-yet-finished-and-great-scenarios and I think I will get a good story with some stuff of my old ideas mixed! :D ;)

So if I design say 16 towns which are all not yet ruins, I have to make at least 16 outdoor sections, or doesn´t that count so much if I´m a newcomer???

I ask that ´cause I try to make usually small scens with a good storyline and hard battles, I try to get all I can out of every town!!! :D

Edit: Forgot to say that I will make a BoE scenario! ;)

You know, why the Sliths are green - because of their scales.

Maybe you know why some slith eyes were once red - ´cause the demons, which led them were red.

But why are the eyes of the Slith Lord Followers red? Because they see the remains of their enemies always before the battle begins!

You don't need to have an outdoor section for every town, you know. You can put several into one outdoor section.

I might participate. Maybe.

I'll most certainly participate.

what happened with the old monitor? did your sister light the cat and threw it to the montor, causing a nuclear melt down in one of the big nuclear power plants of these world, thereby causing tottal distruction of the earth, and thereby, your monitor?

No, I think it was that simple that his cat crashed the monitor though clawing at it! ;)

No, no. The zone thing is just an explanation of how scenario size is counted. So if you have a scenario with 16 towns, you have to have at least 5 outdoor sections if you want to enter it into the Large Scenario category, or 1-4 outdoor sections if you want to enter it into the Small Scenario category. But if you're entering into the Newcomer category, it doesn't matter anyway.

A key point to note is that only USED outdoor sections and towns will be counted. Outdoor sections and towns that are not used in the scenario will not be counter. This is usually relevant to outdoors only.

Hopefully I can get myself to get to work and finish a scenario. With such a far-off deadline, it becomes a maybe-possiblity. :)

Well, I already have a scenario out that hasn't been in any previous contests, so why wouldn't I participate? Hopefully I can find some time to finish another smaller scenario by November.

Yes! I now have a reason for existence over the summer! I'll try to get at least one out by November. Before I do so, however, I'm going to wait until A4 comes to PC (bloody elitist Mac users).

Why wait? Start now.

Just a thought.

Oh, and a general comment: there is a possibility that there will be a "utility" category.
