I've checked the scripts. The altar's just an altar; it doesn't ever do anything useful for you.

I'm not gonna say how much older than that I am but it seems that most people I have talked to seem very young..... :P

If you don't want people to know your age, you should probably take your date of birth out of your profile. :P

Dexterity vs. Missile Weapons in Geneforge Series

Well, no, since Missile Weapons skill also increases the damage you do with missiles, which Dexterity doesn't do. Besides, if you're playing Geneforge 2 or 3, skill costs increase as you raise a skill, so it's even more important to build up your skills in a balanced way.

Wanderer, I should imagine, since there's already a member who goes by that name.

And why the party can carry the same amount regardless of whether they're naked or loaded down with several suits of chain mail in their packs?

Both are good for 5% per point, I think. On the other hand, dexterity also does other useful things like increasing your chance to dodge attacks.

Probably because a lot of skill points in most of the premade classes are put in... suboptimal places.

In Geneforge 2 it's also possible to remain unaligned throughout the game, which is a lot like the Loyalist path but a little harder and with a slightly better ending.

Divinely Touched doesn't give you a Parry bonus. It gives bonuses to Blademaster, Sharpshooter and Magery. (Mind you, that's still pretty good.)

Oh, that reminds me; it's not a bad idea to make anyone who's going to be doing any melee combat or archery (which is probably your entire party) a Nephil. You get bonuses to Gymnastics and missile weapon skills.

Pulling the lever should release the chitrachs from their chains.

Are you sure you're talking to the right spider? As long as you've received the quest to free the chitrachs and pulled the lever in the giant caves, you should be able to talk to the chief spider and get your reward.

Unfortunately, if you saved after defeating Rentar-Ihrno, you can't walk out as the exit is blocked by rubble.

Check your autosave slot. You may well have an autosave that's before beating Rentar but after your most recent regular save.

Pylons in Avernum 4
...b10010b...
Member # 869

If you attack a pylon while the entire party is out of range of the pylon's own attacks, it'll regenerate HP very quickly. You can still kill them this way, but it's even more tedious than usual. An alternative is to have one fighter stand within range and the rest of your party stand out of range while they attack with missiles and spells (and heal the fighter when necessary).

Really, unlike the ones leading to Rentar's first hideout, there's no clever way past the field of pylons. Just run straight through them. Use Divine Restoration if anyone gets frozen or badly injured. If your party's Nature Lore is very high, try and get to the cache in the far northwest of the field; there's a very nice item in there.

EDIT: Wait... you're level 23? I'm guessing you're at the pylons west of Fort Remote, leading to Rentar's first fort. In that case, it's possible to get through there without getting attacked by a single pylon if you're careful. In fact, it isn't even necessary to haste and run past them in combat mode, although it helps. Just hug the walls, and turn back and find another way if you can't get through a particular passage.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with pretty graphics; it's just that I don't think that's what he was after.

Graphical design isn't the kind of art he's talking about, I suspect. He means Art with a capital A.

Okay, one game that comes to mind is Odyssey: the Legend of Nemesis. Most problems in the game have a violent and a non-violent solution; the violent solution is usually easier to find, and invariably results in innocent people dying. Of the two "good" endings, one involves the player character's death and the other involves the destruction of several cities.

1. Yes.

2. Personally I like to make everyone a Custom character, since that gives me flexibility to spend skill points however I like. Using default characters or preset classes seems rather dull to me. My party setup, which worked fairly well for me throughout the game, was one swordsman, one archer/priest, one thrower/priest and one mage/thief. (Incidentally, stay away from thrown weapons; it's a huge pain to carry them around. Use bows instead.)

For your frontline fighter (regardless of whether you decide to give him swords or polearms), you should try to get either Parry or Gymnastics as soon as possible to improve your defensive ability. You can afford to wait a while before putting points in Endurance, since it's only useful at higher levels.

For your spellcasters, invest in appropriate spell skills (Mage Spells and/or Priest Spells) and a little Intelligence at first. Hold off on Spellcraft and Magery until later, since you can buy training for them in Cotra if you haven't put skill points into them.

By the way, see this thread to find out what the requirements are to gain hidden skills like Parry, Gymnastics and Magery.

One more thing: it's very, very important to make your Tool Use character a mage. The Unlock Doors spell and the Tool Use skill have a synergistic effect, allowing you to open some doors that you can't reasonably unlock any other way. With Unlock Doors and decent Magery and Spellcraft, you'll only ever need about 15 Tool Use to open everything that can be opened; without Unlock Doors, you'll spend ridiculous amounts on Tool Use throughout the whole game and still be unable to open some doors.

Ah, wait a second here. It can but it doesn't have to, right? If a language doesn't use it, but it can be used for that as an alternative way, then my language has a genitive, no? I can't recall ever saying that my language can't use it, only that they don't use it for that. That's no contradiction what I said.

Well, if the case is never used to express a partitive relationship, then a speaker who used the case to express a partitive relationship wouldn't be understood, unless it's an archaic usage or something.

Really, though, I'm not sure why all this wrangling is necessary. If you don't want the case to be usable to denote partitive relationships, just call it a possessive case instead of a genitive case. At this point you seem to be more interested in winning an argument than in using the most accurate terms to describe your language.

On the other hand, how many bonding knives do you really need? You'll already have found two of them by that point, and there are only certain types of character on which they're really useful.

English doesn't, but that's irrelevant. The point is that a case that can serve the same function as the "of" in both "a glass of milk" and "the home of the man" is genitive, and a case that can't isn't.
