Biological labs don't need to be neat and keep things separate. Otherwise things like penecillin wouldn't get discovered. The fact that the growth conditions for penecillin were extremely tight in terms of environment make its discovery even more rare. One physics student decided to use a bunsen burner to fry up hamburgers. He chose the cheapest, greasiest grade of meat. If he had remembered to close the door and vent the room outside he probably wouldn't have incurred the wrath of all the professors down the hall who weren't invited. I think that caused the second or third letter from the department chairman to our boss to stop doing something that was causing trouble for him. When Gone With the Wind was first previewed to a test audience, they didn't have the music so they tacked on music from a similar genre film. It didn't hurt the film's reception. It's only when the soundtrack is significantly different from the audience's anticipation that you have problems. I've had friends watch shows where they turned the TV sound down and substituted their own music with no adverse affects other than they were already weird. It trys to realistically portray that expensive lab equipment is used for food preparation because physicists aren't allow microwave ovens :) . A bit stereotypical, but fun. Most people kill Spire's leader because she supports the Darkside Loyalists against the Avernites. You can go the other way and kill Bargha's leader, but it causes more problems and a longer walk to sell loot. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

AD&D 1st edition rules had male characters being stronger and female characters having higher charisma (being prettier and using that to influence NPCs) limits. I don't have the books out, but each point of strength added something like 10 pounds of carrying capacity. For 18+ strengths t it was the to hit/damage that became significant since 18/00 was +3 to hit and +6 damage as opposed to +1/+3 for 18/50. There was some justification that the extremes were in favor of men, but since most people wanted to max out their characters, they would have to play males for fighters. Knights of the Dinner Table had a female player running a male fighter because she was tired of that happening. Edit to correct to Jumpin' Salmon's number. Nethergate: Resurrection only added a few new characters and Avernum 5 didn't seem to have any mention either. Avernum 5 seemed to be more concerned with money and politics (power) rather than personal relationships. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

Yes, but then he had to listen to heaping doses of it from C. S. Lewis. That would be enough to sour it for anyone. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

quote:Really, you couldn't see that The Hobbit is an allegory for the Spanish Civil War. Bilbo is the foreigners that come as anti-fascist fighters to aid the monarch Thorin Oakenshield. Smaug represents the fascist that have taken the country. Sauron (Hitler) is meanwhile sending supporters into neighboring lands and is repulsed in the proxy war leading up to LotR. Okay it doesn't perfectly fit, but I'm not up on that war. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

There is some material in the appendicies giving the timeline between the two books (characters born, battles fought, etc.) and there were sections talking about the characters past histories. So it's possible to make up some based on that as a starting point, but the hobbit part will be boring since Bilbo writes his adventures and Frodo steals mushrooms. Also spears type weapons are generally two handed so you can't use shields. Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |

It was in one of the introductions for a book. Part of the problem was he had a few children and was trying to save for their future educations. The figure I've seen is that a basic paper back run nets an author about $20,000. This is higher for an established author that can command more than the basic $5.99 per book price and royalty. This is a few years ago so it will be higher due to inflation. [ Sunday, April 27, 2008 23:51: Message edited by: Randomizer ] Posts: 4643 | Registered: Friday, February 10 2006 08:00 |
