Spears? How do I use them in combat?

Okay so i looked pretty hard and it seems like a pretty silly question, but arnt spears ment to have some kind of longer range then melee weapons like swords and maces, it sais in the description "its better to hit your foe before he can reach you" does this mean that theres a way to get extra range from spears in nethergate: resurrection?

Maybe they are the same as swords but i was just wondering.

No. Spears do more damage, in general, but have no greater range.

Also spears type weapons are generally two handed so you can't use shields.
