Trumpet: Pachebel's Canon in d minor Flugelhorn: There's this one really common latin jazz improv piece; the name in English is "The Little sunflower" or somesuch; I can never recall its name in Spanish. I don't really have a favorite for any of my other instruments, as I don't play them that often. ------------------- The Silent Assassin's favorite song to play is Zoot Suit Riot, on trombone. Sometimes pure ridiculity is the way to go. Though my first vote really would go to Darth Vader. -------------------- The Silent Assassin's favorite bad guy is the Jackal, from the namesake movie starring Bruce Willis. I think it's because of either the Jackal's brilliant subterfuge tactics, or the fact that his weaponry makes the victim's skull splurge. Probably the latter. I spent May day being oppressed under the harsh scourge of final exams. And packing. and cleaning. and packing. and more packing. Did I mention that I spent a lot of time today packing? Edit: Splling -------------------- The Silent Assassin once, a long time ago, said somehing witty at a dinner party. I forget exactly what he said, because at that instant, the Goths finally attacked Rome. But I remember that it was funny. Very nice poll, Starty. After reading this whole string about video game music, I wondered, why not group all soundtracks together as their own genre? Isn't the idea of a soundtrack to relate the listener to events complemented by the music, even when the events aren't going on? quote:Christian rock is more like a sub-subgenre, much like sacred music could be said a subgenre of classical. Lyrics, as Slarty said, are an integral part of the song. There are, yes unfortunately, "Christian versions" of other styles of music. But, in my experience working with a campus radio station for a christian college, many of these are sickeningly poor rip-offs of various style in order to either make money off of an apparrently isolationist subculture, or the work of said isolationist subculture to keep itself from going secular. Most of the better artists have a blend between "secular" and "sacred" work within their colloective repitoire, and are generally considered good artists within a sub-subgenre, not "christian versions" of a genre. See artists like Reliant K, Jeremy Camp, Switchfoot, and the guy that did the Christmas Shoes song (I can never remember his name). Odd unverified subcultural myth: POD was considered "Christian rock" group by the christian community until they stopped doing blatantly "sacred" work, and then they were virtually immediately rejected. One little thing that you have to notice about media in general throughout the ages: Only the good stuff lasts. -------------------- The Silent Assassin has begun yet another attept at creating the ultimate homemade incendiary device. Diki, I love my review. :D And if you're going where I think you're going with this plot... you're awesome! My idea of an afterlife? If I'm going to heaven, then let's call this heaven: It would probably be a lot like the life that I'm living, with a few differences. I would never be separated from the people I love (or at least, I would always be within walking distance). Work would always be enjoyable. (yes, work. I don't want to get bored) For some reason, I see a lot of storytelling and creative thought. No lines for gas. Heck, let's get rid of fuels entirely. Everything runs off of divine will. An endless supply of chewing gum, in varying flavors. I would be able to know everything humanly possible and yet still be able to learn more. I wouldn't necessarily want to know everything, but just knowing that I could... -------------------- The Silent Assassin, when asked about his ideas of the afterlife, gave an answer while I wasn't paying attention. The world will be a much better place when someone finally discovers cold fusion. On a more serious note, I'm going to have to agree with Kel about the fact that there is no one way that we can solve our energy problems. What little I know about alternative energy leads me to believe that geothermal, ethanol, and hydrogen-cel power sources may be the major answers. The problem is, of course, efficiency, especially in light of current energy trends. Face it: solar and wind power are only efficient when they are given a lot of space, and then only in areas where the climate constantly suits them. Currently, electric-only cars are impractical (though I thought that they got a bit more than 100 miles per charge. oh well.), especially for people who are required to be constantly driving, or those that need to regularly drive long distances. Pretty much, what we need is more research, or rather, further progress in research. Which takes funding and skill and luck. Edit: Yay for nuclear power! Clean, efficient, and not nearly as deadly as people think! Edit2: Gasp. 150 posts. -------------------- The Silent Assassin once experimented with natural methane as a power source. But I'm not going there. [ Wednesday, April 26, 2006 11:45: Message edited by: Lenar Labs ] -------------------- -Lenar Labs What's Your Destiny? Alo: Point made. On that note, I would like to point out that the Bible has been proven historically accurate, where it touches upon documented history. So we'll call it half-blind faith. But that does not mean that religion cannot possibly accept evidence. quote:Justice. Perfection. I once heard "balance" thrown into the mix, but I don't necessarily agree with it. Essentially, a perfect God must have a perfect, balanced judicial system. Everyone who intentionally violates His perfect will must be punished, because it is an act of defiance (or somesuch). Justice must be served out because this is a perfect system. The forgiveness bit comes in because there is apparrently a loophole in the perfect system (makes you wonder about the nature of perfection), in that even though someone has to be punished, it doesn't have to be the one who transgressed. So, through some strange working of great theological and metaphysical significance that I don't really understand (i just know that it works), the way things work out is that hell is for two kinds of people: People who are still defiant of God, and those that don't want forgiveness. -------------------- The Silent Assassin once attempted to use self-hypnosis to make himself forget about a certain job. It took me four hours to figure out how to get him out of the trance. -------------------- -Lenar Labs What's Your Destiny? Ushmushmeifa: Lenar's power is almighty and ineffable. quote:Um... no. One of the greatest and most influential "modern" misunderstandings about religion, especially religions like Christianity (as well as Islam, Mormons, Satanists, gnostics, and others, to a point) is the fact that "faith" has nothing to do with evidence. This derives directly from a misunderstanding of what faith is. The accepted definition of "Faith" is some sort of blind trust that has no proof. Wrong. Faith is the logical hope that accompanies a trust that is earned by evidence. Or, in simpler terms, Faith is trust. Contrary to Rantalot, evidence has everything to do with it, because with no evidence, faith is useless. Belief in Christianity without evidence of a Resurrection is about the same as a belief in the idea the Jimmy Hoffa is alive and well and owns a bar in LA. Logic and evidence part are the foundation of the Christian faith. Because, frankly, baseless trust is either desperate or stupid. Evidence? Judaism was formed at Mt. Sinai, after the entire nation had been exposed to miracle after miracle, culminating in an announcement of God in front of the entire people, and then a huge banquet with Him and the national leaders. All of this followed by more miracle witnessed by a nation. Ask about evidence? In the Gospels, there are many references to eyewitnesses to the Miracles of Christ, including the Resurrection; speaking in Tongues, the survival of the Church. You want to argue about logic in religion? In the Old Testament, there are countless points where writers and prophets ask their audience to listen to God and use common sense. The Apostle Paul argued for Christianity using simple talk and logic. In fact, he argued against not having an intelligent faith. What more is faith than trust? How else to earn trust than to do the impossible? Of other note, it is my not-so-humble opinion that if a Vatican priest can't reconcile the "spiritual" and "secular" worlds, he doesn't deserve to be a priest. Being a priest is all about bridging that gap, or so I am told by what friends I have who are Jesuit priests. -------------------- The Silent Assassin has demanded a pay raise. So I doubled his lack of pay. Huzzah for loopholes. -------------------- -Lenar Labs What's Your Destiny? Ushmushmeifa: Lenar's power is almighty and ineffable. Dintiridan: I had the same problem, though I don't know what's causing it. I fixed it by manually changing the file extension after saving. If Windows Explorer doesn't allow you to view file extensions, go into the menu: Tools > Folder Options, and select the View tab. There's a checkbox within the options that says "Hide extensions for known file types". Deselect that, and the only thing you have to do to change the extension is rename the file. -------------------- The Silent Assassin recently complained to me about the fact that I always disagree with him. I, too, believe in celebrating the idea (which is why I go to church on Sunday, as well as celebrate the holidays); however, to the academic mind, the date for Christmas doesn't gel with historical fact (and the fact that the Catholic church was quite fond of replacing pagan holidays).
