In my personal professional repitiore (sp?): Trumpet (and Flugelhorn, obviously) Mellophone Bugle Things that I've been trained to do but haven't done in years: Percussion melodic percussion french horn baritone recorder Self-Taught, for pleasure and writing only: Keyboards. And I sing bass/baritone. I was almost a music major at one point, before I wanted to go into the industial sciences. Before I went into media. -------------------- The Silent Assassin's instrument of choice is the trombone, though he is quite proficient in tuba, baritone, euphonium, bugle (don't ask), and baton (wavy stick). He also claims that he sings tenor, but I have yet to witness any proof. -------------------- -Lenar Labs What's Your Destiny? Ushmushmeifa: Lenar's power is almighty and ineffable. My roommate and I were, until our phone line spontaneously went dead (we're still waiting for mainenance to take a look), in the habit of changing our message once a week. These are a few of my favorites. "Hi, you've reached the Gates of Hell. We're kinda busy right this second, so leave some contact info and we'll try to get back to you, eventually. [someone screams in the background] Oh crap." [Pick a song. Any song. Find your favorite part of the song. Play it in front of the answering machine] "[Using a voice synthesizer] Hello. You are listening to an answering machine message. Feel proud. Have a nice day." "Hi, you've reached [your names here]. If you are a telemarketer: we have no money. If you are a bank or credit card company: we already gave you all of our money. If you are our parents, please send more money. If you are a hot, sexy woman, please leave your number, because we've got plenty of money." "Hello? Oh hi. Uh huh. Cool. Oh yeah, right, I'm not really here right now. Sorry." [Approximately 30 seconds of escalating manic laughter] "Walther, we're ignoring you this week. If you aren't Walther, keep talking. If we are around, we're screening our calls." There was this one time when a guy in our hall went out to dinner and left his door open and lights on. The whole assembly of our hall congregated in his room and recorded a message advertising a gay orgy. "Pizza?" "Purple pizza." "Pulverized purple pizza?" "Precisely." "Perplexing." "In honor of [whatever special week it happens to be.], we have decided that our message will be half a minute of silence. Thank you." [The rest of the allotted time is silence] -------------------- The Silent Assassin's voicemail is very strange: "You have reached [number here]. We're sorry, but the party that you are calling was unable to answer your call. Please leave a message." -------------------- -Lenar Labs What's Your Destiny? Lenar Labs has two projects underway: one more immediate, the other slowly churning away until the day that our combined scripting skills are up to the task. The main project is a small, plot-driven scenario with under a dozen dungeons. Preproduction was halted in the map sketching stage about three weeks ago, when, seemingly simultaneously, I ran into an unexpected morass of projects and exams that has not quite yet to end, and the Silent Assassin's computer caught a virus. I'm hoping to go into it head-on over Easter break. -------------------- The Secondary project, brainchild of the Silent Assassin, is finished in basic design and plot deveolpment. Currently, we are, when the mood suits us, working on custom graphics and maps. The original goal was to get this one out in time for the next scenario design contest, but we believe that the scripting level required to pull this off is far above our heads at this point. Patience and practice... -------------------- -Lenar Labs What's Your Destiny? Ushmushmeifa: Lenar's power is almighty and ineffable. I don't remember ever taking that one, but it's one of the better pictures I have. No, it's not real. Neither is the half-finished age makeup. (1) One of my classmates once set a wire gauze on fire. Anyone with chemistry experience should understand the irony. (2) I jumped out a window for a student film. I have a very boring life. (3) Come to think of it... I don't think that I've ever humiliated myself for money... (4) I have yet to find a source of money large enough to be worth my humiliation... Maybe if it involved running around a costume department in my underwear... (5) The sacking of Rome sounds pretty interesing. Either that, or the dedication of Herod's temple. Why? Because "modern" history doesn't interest me that much. (6) "Ah, crap." The two words that best describe my life. (7) Bland, I suppose. But the dessert is pretty good. (8) No. (9) A blacklight. It cost me $10. I bought it eight years ago, and have yet to use it. (10) Imban, because then I would have killed everyone. (11) Alec. I flipped a coin. ------------------- The Silent Assassin has announced that just completed yet another successful attempt at deranged subterfuge! Let's all give him a hand for completing a mission that nobody will ever know about! Well... I finally gave in and posted the first chapter. Call it a teaser. Maybe having an active audience will force me to finish the stupid thing. Of course, in the scheme of things, my Blades scenario takes precedence. My not-so-original story can be found here, waiting to be read and criticized (not that there is much there right now to be criticized). I quake in fear. -------------------- The Silent Assassin is pleased to note that you have accepted his challenge to duel with bananna peels. The contest begins right now. quote:I like The Screwtape Letters myself, but I'll never consider it a classic. I suppose that Lewis was a much better theologian/philosopher and teacher than author. I'd like to propose an author not yet mentioned: the not-so-beloved George Orwell. The novel that I'd specifically like to mention is 1984. Dated as it may appear, it is a timeless source of social commentary and philosophical thought. -------------------- The Silent Assassin is watching you. -------------------- -Lenar Labs What's Your Destiny? Making a map is not at all a bad place to start. I'm a big fan of flowcharts, myself; but you actually need a story first, right? My advice as a current first-time writer (though Kel already mentioned this) is to play the scenarios that are already available, and to look through what makes them tick, if you find them interesting. Check out the stuff that is available: individual webpages, the Louvre, the Codex, and other resource sites, for example. Why try to come up with stuff of your own if someone else has created what you need, right? Remember, everyone on this forum is available to help, whether for scripting, testing, or just idea bouncing. -------------------- The Silent Assassin is currently at work on a grass-shortening device. If anyone who knows me or has been around the board enough over the past two months knows... Lenar Labs is a small division of an already production group, devoted to use other peoples' software to tell stories. Lenar Labs is comprised of two guys from New Jersey who have aquired pseudonyms by stealing them from characters that they made up. We are Lord Grimm and the Silent Assassin. The Lenar part comes from the name of a character we created called Maxor Lenar, who was a sorcerer who did some stuff that if revealed here would be a rotten spoiler if the story were ever published, but is similar in our collective mind to what we're doing with Avernum and other stuff. And now that I'm finished pontificating, a word from my dear partner: -------------------- The Silent Assassin has recently taken to collecting pens in an attempt to surreptitiously siphon off all of the ink as part of his newest plans in the fied of deranged subterfuge. Knowing him, this plan will eventually also come to involve a large vat of bacon grease, a watermelon, a box of plasticware, a few bowling balls of varying weight, and my convertable VolksWagon Beetle. -------------------- -Lenar Labs What's Your Destiny? Sometimes plot can be a good device to get a party going. But it has to be a good plot. New toys for destruction and spells and money are always good motivators, so long as the player believes that enduring the plot is worth the reward, and in an RP sense, the characters believe that getting through the plot is worth the reward (though the plot is, as I said, sometimes its own reward). If you can find the right balance between motivation for goods and motivation for skill points and the right balance of combat and exploration and expostition (three-way-balance), you should be able to lead your audience through your story with no problems. Although leading them on with flashy technical stuff and hints of or using a few cool items definitely helps. Me, I'm a sucker for a well-written cutscene, if it enhances the exposition properly. -------------------- The Silent Assassin has decided that he will create an Item so powerful that anyone who wields it will most definitely overcome any obstacle placed before him. He will then use this Item to destroy France, Canada, Khasakstan, and Ohio, after looting them of all things of monetary and historical value. What I want to know is what he holds against Khasakstan. -------------------- -Lenar Labs What's Your Destiny? Ushmushmeifa: Lenar's power is almighty and ineffable. You may also want to experiment, if you have the software capabilities, with creating a custom terrain set using a /semitransparent, masked overlay of the floor/ overtop of the hill terrain to create the appearance of texture. (slashes added for clarity) One can generally do this sort of thing in a photo-editing program that allows for layers. Granted, such programs are rarely free. I may go try it, just to see what kind of results I can get. Mab: Can you check to make sure that your links are directed properly? I can't get anything but the floors and terrain section to come up. Well, to answer the thing about novels, I'm writing something based on Exile (Avernum) 2 in my spare time. I'm doing the second installment , because it's the only one that is really plot-based; though I've considered using the same characters in a version of third installment. I haven't posted what I have written anywhere yet because I want to kinda post it in order, and in installments, and, well, the prologue isn't done. -------------------- -Lenar Labs What's Your Destiny?
