I'm not sure that I could call Brooks a Tolkien ripoff, in that Brooks has a clearly different style and approach to his to his writing. The epic quality that he attempts in the Shannara series does seem a bit derivitive, however, and is definitely not his strength (try reading his Star Wars novel. ugh). And all of this "series" crap that he's been doing lately (the Voyage of the Jerle Shannara and beyond) has ruined my once exteremely high opinion of him as an author.
Despite this, I still enjoy most of his works.
My personal favorite of his works is Running with the Demon , mostly for concept originality.

But I brought up the Sword of Shannara because it is still a good seller, and despite the "historical synopsis"-type battle scenes is still a good book overall.
And, being a filmmaker, I think that it would make a great movie in the right hands.

And just because Narnia was a complete flop in the quality department doesn't mean that it won't sell well.

I think that you're oversimplifying it quite a bit by blaming it all on the party system.
But what you've suggested is definitely interesting.
Me, I'm registered Independant because most American parties (Democrats and Republicans included)are simply self-serving, power-hungry political-action propaganda groups who seek to get votes by pleasing voters.
And being independant still doesn't keep the darn republicans from calling on a weekly basis... ugh... I swear, if I have to hear the words "the Democrats are mobilizing" one more freaking time...

Looking over the world news a bit after this topic was started, I'd like to amend my observations.

What I'm seeing is not necessarily a shift towards conservatism, but a shift away from Anti-conservatism towards true liberalism. Which just so happens to have some elements in the "conservative" direction.
The way I see it, the world is coming back to its senses and is starting to finally realize that it's okay to agree with your political opponent on a few things, as well as keeping your eyes open for better options.

(Edit: Grammar correction)

Hmm...
The Silent Assassin was quite excited to hear that they were going to be doing an Eragon movie, in that it is one of his favorite books.
Though he is worried that they'll screw it up.
Me? I've never read it, and after reading this commentary, don't really plan to.

Personally, I'm waiting for Terry Brooks to start selling movie rights.
With the right people behind it, The Sword of Shannarra could more than likely outdo Narnia in both quality and sales.

The Silent Assassin's input was not asked for this post, as I am sure he would find the subject matter questionable.
Then again, he...

Simply posting every day, Dikiyoba?
I have been a member of these forums for 39 days at this point, and average a little more than 1.25 posts per day.
By my count, you have been on these forums 24 days longer than I have, and you have about nine times as many posts as I do.

Kel stole everything that I was gonna say, and then some.

The only thing that I like about the Medieval period is the romantacised stereotype that is derived from its outclassed fighting system and failed honor code.
And weaponry and armor, but that goes into the fighting system.

Lenar Labs utilizes a two-part signature.

The first bit is an in-post little "quote" from my -cough- most dear partner in crime (if he ever gets his rear in gear and starts writing again), which is just a little thing we came up with in a different forum. If I'm gonna make a post, I'll show it to him and and he'll give some sort of response.
I have had to speak for him on a few occasions.

The second part is just our team's name and slogan with a link to our host website that doesn't have our division posted yet.
Gonna have to work on that.

Wow.
You avoid forums for a day in order to get a project finished, and suddenly people are debating vaccination.

Thuryl, to complete what you asked, I went and quickly looked up some references.
For a general idea of what lies behind those questions (they were based on some material from a theology and worldview course), see Romans 1:18-32 , 2:14-15 , and 3:19-26 for starters. I can find more if you want me to.

quote:
What, so you're claiming it isn't possible to feel guilty for doing the right thing? That seems like a pretty untenable position, considering all the things that some people can feel guilty about.

I talked with a theology professor over that one, especially in light of Romans 2:15.
I got a whole lot of "deep" gabbering about how all wrong results from sin and that even feeling guilty for doing something right is the result of total corruption, blah blah blah.
My (totally fallable) understanding is that we know when things aren't the way that they're supposed to be.
I took that hint directly from the theology course note pack, and did not fully think through its full philosophical implications when I posted it. I simply made a wrong assumption about acceptablilty and understanding.
So, my foul there.

And, yeah, let's call it a difference of principles.

Synergy: are you involved in Christian Science (the religion) or something?

quote:
-Alorael, who now has to question why God would send His only son to bring a new variation on the one true religion to the people and, incidentally, a whole lot of burning and damnation. People say the Old Testament God is vengeful, but He doesn't do anything quite like damning multitudes.
Christianity is not as much a variation on Judaism as the alleged fulfillment of it. Once the system of the Law was completely satisfied for all time(the Mosaic Law, surprisingly enough, expects people to fail. that's the entire point of the sacrificial system), the way that people approach the system had to be changed.

The damnation was always there, it's just that only the Jews were originally held fully accountable because they were the example and had direct access to God and the atonement sacrificial system. After Christ, God holds Everyone fully accountable because everyone can get in on the system of grace, because He took care of all of the punishments and sacrifices that are demanded from breaking the law, and because there are no more sacrifices, you don't have to go through the Jews, so now the system is open to everyone.
Yay for run-on sentances.

Complicated?
Yeah.
But not that complicated.

May I jump in and help you answer that question yourself?

I'll try to present the answer in three simple yes or no questions. Bear in mind that these come from the Biblical Christian worldview.

1. Do you believe there is a God (a perfect supernatural being that created and is ultimately in control of everything in existence)?

2. If so, do you believe that you have ever violated this God's will in any way, shape, or form?(hint: if you have ever felt guilty, you have)

3. If so, have you made amends with God over all of these violations? (let's not get technical here, let's just say that you believe everything to be all good)

If you answered No to any of these three questions, you are in violation to the will of God and must serve out justice by being punished for eternity.

If you answered Yes to all three questions, there are a few technical requirements that need to be confirmed and/or completed (these requirements are part of a simple judicial process that pretty much confirms question 3.), and you no longer need worry about punishment because someone else volunteered to take it for you.

This all came from the Bible and should be what every Christian believes.

You have an answer.

1. Jewels, Kelandon's leek soup example is legit.
Some people love the soup, some people hate it, some will hate it and grow to love it. Some will love it and grow to hate it.
But you don't help people develop a taste for it by shoving it down their proverbial throats.

2. Synergy, it is pointless, illogical, and counter-productive to present a spiritual ultimatum before someone who doesn't believe that spiritual ultimatums exist.

3. To the Christians At Large, especially the verbose ones...
COMMON SENSE, PEOPLE. We're on a gaming forum. Most of us are the logical-mathematical-geeky-science types. It's not like you're gonna bring the house down with a Billy Grahm-type emotional experience. Heck, Rev. Grahm didn't even try to use emotion...

4. Meaning that instead of bringing up dogmatic and ambigouous bits of experience, you should be bringing hard answers and empirical proof to hard questions and high expectations.
We claim to have answers. We need to know what they really are.

5. We cannot say that we have had a greater spiritual experience than someone else. Comparing individuals' spiritual experiences might as well be comparing individuals.

6. Here's the really amazing thing that most Christians don't seem to get... we (humans) don't have to do anything. Nothing. We don't have to care. We don't have to serve. We don't have to acknowledge God's existence if we don't want to. (heck, I could get on a whole sociological tangent here, but I won't) It's a beautiful gift called free will.
We are simply asked to care. The choice is up to us. Therefore, some of us choose to care, choose to serve, choose to do what we've been asked to do.
The alternative, as Christians see it, isn't pleasant. But the point is, we are obligated to nothing.

7. Ephesos, I like the AOL CD analogy.

8. In light of that, my young apologetics, momentarily consider apologetics akin to a holy marketing scheme (I am soooo gonna get eaten alive for saying that). I want you to stop and think for a moment... just because grace is free, does it make it worthwhile? Yes, to you, obviously.
Here's the hard part: WHY?
Why bother? Those AOL CDs get you into some pretty nasty contracts. Just because you're getting a free deal doesn't mean it's a good deal. What makes Christianity's "grace" such a good deal?
Why bother with free AOL demos when you can pay for much more reliable DSL?
Why bother with Jesus if you can find a more reliable source in Allah or Buddah, et. al.?

Heed my warning if you will.
Or not.
It's up to you.

I like all of this arguing about knowledge, because it makes some of us, myself included, question how we "know" what we know.

Fifteen hundred years ago, everyone who cared "knew" that the world was flat. Up until the rennaissance, everyone "knew" that the earth was the center of the universe.
Up until three weeks ago, eveyone "knew" that Nico was a guy.

Dikiyoba - sometimes, we need to put the kittens at risk. We just need to make sure that the risk is not unnecessary.

I have a challenge for the people in this thread:
How can we definitively say "God is", if the one thing that we've all agreed upon so far (out of those of us who admit to believing in the supernatural) is that God is above human comprehension?

I have an answer which I believe will be acceptable to most of us in this discussion, and I'll give it, eventually.
Though I'm sure that there is more than one answer... and I'm curious as to what others there may be...
which is why the forum is open...
