quote:That's not quite true, Aran. I used your site for a while to host the chat database, but decided to create my own domain for several reasons, one of them being the uncensored nature of the chats. :P Edit: That said, if anyone would like a site that is a subdomain of shadowvale.net rather than ermarian.net (perhaps I should be advertising this on the Nethergate board), send me a PM, and I'll set it up for you. The only real advantage I can see for my host over Aran's is that my host does not have content restrictions, although that probably doesn't matter for Spiderweb-related materials. I've probably got the only site that needs a host without content restrictions, with the profanity and worse things that happen in the chats. :P [ Friday, March 17, 2006 19:34: Message edited by: Tyran the Chat Pimp ] -------------------- "You're drinking liquor because you're thirsty? Tyran, you did host it on the public webspace for a time, but that's not what I meant. :P Also, regarding content restrictions I'm afraid to say I see no significant difference... Compare: quote: quote:(the funny thing is that I am in Germany and host my website in Texas, whereas Tyran is in Pennsylvania and hosts his in Australia. Truly, we live in a global age...) Ok, so here I've got a couple of minutes to post something in internet. So, first of all, I'd like to thank everybody, who somehow took part in the discussion. From my side, I want to make a sort of a work plan for the next week (or two, who knows if there happens some revolution over here in Russia amongst beer fans). I'll try to read everything, related to Ermarian fanfiction or scifi as well: the Resurection balm outline is more psychological research than a fantasy novel. The nex step will be a working-out of a structure of resource from design to filling. The way I see it is a sort of a place, where will rest novels, verses, outlines, etc. More to say, I think that I'll develop a line of contest writing on a given topic. But all that will be only available when more than my unpretentious person finds his/her interest in such art. Huh. I could have sworn that you had said something about written content before. Oh well, I guess they are the same. Well, anyone who likes the domain shadowvale.net better than ermarian.net is welcome to contact me, and I'll set something up for you. Edit: They recently changed the language restrictions on sphosting, by the way. They now allow sites in anyt language. (Not that it matters to me since the only language I'm fluent in is English :P ) [ Monday, March 20, 2006 09:44: Message edited by: Tyranicus ] -------------------- "You're drinking liquor because you're thirsty? The first thing Spiderweb teaches new members is how to have 3-4 conversations at the same time, in the same thread. :) On that note, I'm very eager to see how your website plans will turn out, Meeshka. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. Well, I'm greately sorry for keeping silence for so long. Still, if anybody interested, I continue my planning - oh, I'm so lazy to start making the plans come to reality  - and I'm still reading "Crystal Song" by Arancaytar. Also my work (the money making one) takes too much time. All I can do is to create a structure of a website till the end of March. I hate to state the terms, cause I have no idea, how much time I'll have to spare for my needs. Still I'm sort of obliged to state them to have at least a teeny weeny inducement. :( 2LenarLabs aka Lord Grimm: I'm still looking forward to read your novel! 2All: Please, everybody, who wants to take part in writing novels, verses, short stories, etc. based on Ermarian content, be sure to notice that to me in PM, or in this topic, (ICQ, e-mail, phone :) ). It is needed to be sure the resource is worth creating for. Well... I finally gave in and posted the first chapter. Call it a teaser. Maybe having an active audience will force me to finish the stupid thing. Of course, in the scheme of things, my Blades scenario takes precedence. My not-so-original story can be found here, waiting to be read and criticized (not that there is much there right now to be criticized). I quake in fear. -------------------- The Silent Assassin is pleased to note that you have accepted his challenge to duel with bananna peels. The contest begins right now. Very little is there, obviously. What is there is extremely well-written and intriguing. So, I guess I'm part of the active audience. You don't need to fear rotten tomatoes. Great. Now Dikiyoba has to figure out what to do with all the rotten tomatoes. Posts: 4346 | Registered: Friday, December 23 2005 08:00 |

The [first page of] your story is well-written, although a bit more action and a bit less philosophy would be much better for capturing reader's attention. Even Tolstoy starts War and Peace with a conversation at a social gathering and saves his pages of philosophical musings for middle of the book, when readers are sufficiently hooked not to mind it too much. If you replaced half of Erika's musings with interspersed scenes of adventurers fighting Emperor's guards, you'd catch attention of a lot more readers. Especially if you start with action, cut to Erika's tower, back to action, back to tower, etc. [ Wednesday, March 29, 2006 13:52: Message edited by: Zeviz ] -------------------- Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword, For it too has the power to kill. Haven't read the story yet, but I would like to add that combat is a very poor substitute for a real story. The less you use of it, the better. Of course, philosophical musings are not much better. Scenic description ranks a bit higher, and dialogue is probably the most important of them all. -------------------- Encyclopaedia • Archives • Members • RSS [Topic / Forum] • Blog • Polaris • NaNoWriMo Look on my works, ye mighty, and despair. I've read the story, too. Lenar, thank you very much for your creation! Erika is one of my favourite characters. Still, I guess, every beginning writer should know about the Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest. The beginning of the book is VERY important part, at which a reader shall understand whether he can skip couple of first chapters to reach the enthralling part of the story. Or should he turn off the buzzer cause he won't sleep this night at all buried in the novel Edit: I just wantedto say, that I should partly(!) agree with Zeviz [ Wednesday, March 29, 2006 19:58: Message edited by: Meeshka ] -------------------- 9 masks sing in a choir: Gnome Dwarf Slith Giant Troll Troglo Human Nephil Vahnatai "If the mask under mask to SE of mask to the left of mask and to the right of me is the mask below the mask to the right of mask to the right of mask below me is the same, then who am I?" radix: +2 nicothodes: +1 salmon:+1 Posts: 203 | Registered: Tuesday, March 14 2006 08:00 |

quote:You are right that action scenes can't substitute for a real story either. I guess I was seeing this as a BoE scenario script, rather than a novel. :) However, I disagree that the less action the better. Most "classic" novels from War and Peace to LotR to Odysseus have plenty of action scenes. (Although I agree that they tend to open with dialogue, rather than action.) No one has mentioned anything about how important characters are. Obviously, this story is about the characters, since we all know the plot. I want to be introduced to the main characters over the course of the next few chapters. Who are they? Where are they from? Why are they together? How do they interact? That sort of stuff. Quite frankly, little bit of philosophical musings in the prologue doesn't hurt in this case. It's not overly complex or absurd and it tells you a lot about Erika Redmark. Dikiyoba. For those who care: I posted the next section. Perhaps it will ease your concerns. Perhaps it will heighten them. I post it now, because it has been written. I cannot guaruntee that the next part in sequence will come as quickly, as it is not yet written. -------------------- The Silent Assassin has been rather quiet lately. quote:I find it amusing and intriguing that Dikiyoba chooses to refer to him or her self in the third person; a nice touch would be to also throw in an imperial "we" from time to time for variety. It's a practice which reminds me of a fairly recent ex-U.S. Presidential candidate. You'll have to guess his name, but I'll give you a hint: He's old, and his last name is identical to that of a popular brand of market produce. In answer to the question posed by this topic, I have written several books. None were bestsellers by any stretch of the imagination, but they did get the bills paid. I might go into more detail later, but I'm currently addicted to Avernum 3 and wish to return to it with all due haste. :D -------------------- Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home. I'm curious as too how fast Limoncelli is when he's drunk. :P Good stuff. I am anxious to read more. :) -------------------- "You're drinking liquor because you're thirsty? Lenar, the beginning of a chapter - it is something. I really enjoyed the atmosphere of anxiousness and hurry. But to the end in started to look like it is a fairy tale, where all the main heroes gather in one place at midnight. Too much for such a small essay and such a short period of time, I think. I prefer to think that Limoncelli is going to survive that time, cause he was fighting (can't imagine anything else for such a hero), but was too drunk to find himself somewhere under the table and sideway of the main fight... But not because he was escorted arm in arm from the castle like in kindergarten :( P.S. May be this chapter should be a bit longer? :) Edit: I had to, cause there was no answer except mine here. Lenar, what about to continue the story? And the main. I'm now collecting my thoughts about the stuffing of Ermarian Fiction site, and I need a sort of statistics. Firstly, I'd like to know if there are people, interestedto take art in contest writing. Please, send me notification by e-mail (u_ma (at) mail (dot) ru), or just leave them here Secondly, in your post please tell me, what kind of literary style you want to see in a contest: novel, essay (short story), verses, poems (aka very long verses), etc. [ Tuesday, April 04, 2006 04:06: Message edited by: Meeshka ] -------------------- 9 masks sing in a choir: Gnome Dwarf Slith Giant Troll Troglo Human Nephil Vahnatai "If the mask under mask to SE of mask to the left of mask and to the right of me is the mask below the mask to the right of mask to the right of mask below me is the same, then who am I?" radix: +2 nicothodes: +1 salmon:+1 Posts: 203 | Registered: Tuesday, March 14 2006 08:00 |
