Furthermore, line numbers should be counted with "word wrap" disabled. The error line was a major headache before I figured that one out. In addition to Kel's editor suggestion, I've had good luck using Editpad Lite.

Bug - The grotto dialog involving the undead gentleman is forced, even when in combat mode. This causes unfortunate things to happen when the offer to "join" is tendered. Forcing combat to end prior to beginning the conversation, aside from being a more gentile form of communication, would stop that problem.

Intended or not, the "knock, knock" door on the mansion effectively locks you into the house during unfortunate circumstances. It would seem to make more sense that in my haste to leave I would just knife the butler and run. But that's just my natural inclination in any circumstance. Also, it would be nice to use a dead_state inc(x,y,1) on the folks within the mansion to indicate that violence was afoot. I raised an alarm while leaving and didn't get caught, but was chastised by my employer.

Aside from all that, I liked it. Still haven't managed to milk a cow, but that's just fine.

Helpful Scenario Tips... in Blades of Avernum

10 DREAD DISEASES

Below I list some of the many illnesses that plague Blades scenarios.
Keep a vigilant eye out, so you may spot symptoms in your own work
before it's too late.

1: Stupid Party Syndrome

Scenarios affected by this condition force the party to do something
really dumb simply to advance the plot. For example, in Echoes: Assault
you have to attack a friendly fortress to complete the scenario, despite
the fact that this is about the most illogical thing you could do.

2: Scooby Doo's Disease

At the end of the scenario, everything slots together and someone
explains everything that has gone on before, just like at the end of a
Scooby Doo episode. This is usually followed by the big final fight.
Look at Tatterdemalion for an example - this happens at the end of two
of the three paths.

3: Verbal Diarrhea

This very common ailment will cause characters - usually villains - to
spontaneously spew exposition, usually for unreasonably protracted
periods. See Spears.

4: The Plague

Occasionally a scenario will suffer from body image issues and do it's
very best to look exactly like Exile/Avernum 3. A very common symptom is
monster plagues. See Wreck of the Slug.

5: Monty Haul Gut

Simply put, this comes from way too much rich food, weapons, gems, etc.
See nearly anything by Brave Sir Robin.

6: Delusions of Grandeur

If you're making a scenario with the unregistered version and think it's
so good that Spiderweb will give you a free registration for it and it
might even win the contest, because it's really original and has custom
monsters, and you have a big final showdown with Rentar-Inhro... you are
already a victim.

7: Knocker's Migrane

Players get severe headaches from repeatedly banging their heads against
walls looking for secret passages. Spare them the pain - keep all your
doors visible. Alternatively, play Quintessence and get a dose of your
own medicine.

8: Weapon Envy

Some designers just can't get it into their heads that size isn't
everything. They automatically assume that bigger is always better,
especially in relation to fights and weapons. Doom Moon II is a product
of such thinking.

9: Insanity

Pure and simple. If there is an insane character anywhere in your
scenario, amputate him. It would have helped The Draining.

10: Linda's Condition

If you are ever, ever tempted to insert a character controlled by
demons, or who turns out to be a demon, or who has a fascination with
demons, go lie down till the feeling passes. See (suprise, suprise) the
Demon Island scenarios.

"Deceased" is the future tense of "Diseased". Just thought you should
know that.

Please keep in mind that you are free to break any and all of these
rules once you know why they exist.

Use the comb already!

I mean really, must I be the only cheerleader for the inane?

Edit - As Tyranicus is aiming for the "most double postings in a month" award, I'll just add this.

Rhetorical, you nitwits.

Nope, Ephesos got it on the first try. You need to carry all the rocks, minerals, bars you find for the entire game. This loads you down (a little), so make sure you have the correct (light) armor and weapon (bow) and that you know a few speed spells. Of course during the fights it is sensible to drop some rocks to get movement points. Otherwise you couldn't do anything, could you?

Amateur geologists aren't real interested in anything except rocks, light, and caves. You should probably ignore all miscellania you run across, unless it is to be immediately equipped. That frees up more backpack for rocks. ;)

#1 on the list should actually read

quote:
1. Always backup your work before and after every work session. Then backup your backup, because the turtles are hungry tonight.

Why does TGM not include a comb key? That is an important part of the series. The comb symbolizes the hair care requirements following a session of secret door finding, and the key symbolizes... okay, it symbolizes locked doors. And the need to unlock them. :P

In fact there are more ways to rate a power (corporate or country) than there are to skin a cat. I'll continue to ignore the majority as being without merit.

Actually Thuryl, I got well past the 4 or 5 day limit. What bores me is the immense amount of land I have to cross to go from town to town in the poisoned land. BOORRRINNGGGGGG! Killing worms is no problem, but returning to the lich nest to rest up is agony. It makes me wish for something nice and compact like DwtD...

I'll try to help you out here Aran. In my continuing efforts to improve your web skillz(!!!) I've come up with the one plan.

You must allow each registered user select the logo they wish to have displayed. The balance will need to see the Vahnatai Comb-over with Key by Alorael to entice them into registering and participating.

This will free up ubb resources by removing the need for another stupid opinion poll.

:)

I've heard rumor that the author of Roots is insane. Currently having bad time with another BoE scenario called Isle of Boredom. I should jettison it for Roots?

Changing the special item number to 1 has no effect.

Edit - reading slower increases my understanding...but not enough to be helpful.

Ooohhh. His might be even better than mine. I sent a copy to him back a while ago and he did mention that he needed to make improvements to some of the later towns in order to get it to work. I just edited in some boats that eventually proved providential.

Surface world stuff that loosely refers to some distant Empire for patriarchal guidance. Lord Putidus does fall into this category, as do A Good Beginning and Rats Aplenty. Of course there is nothing else that ties those three together. Nothing at all.

I'm still partial to Alorael's comb wielding vahnatai. It takes guts to wade into battle with your hair care utensils.
