Humans are gifted with the luxury of hindsight, and the feeling of emotional loss that may accompany it. It probably would have been "better" if native Americans had been 100% eliminated. It would have meant much less suffering on the Rez, including the chronic alcoholism, drug addiction, and suicide that plague native Americans. We could have marveled over artifacts such as spearpoints and pointed at intricate weavings or cave paintings and nodded sagely, confident that those long lost peoples were noble savages, one with the earth and able to communicate with the animals. Bleagh. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

quote:Well, of course at the level of the individual it is simple to cry out "Me, me!" and claim that good is getting accomplished. At the species level though it may be more admirable to allow humans to be the ones that, through natural selection, become immune to various innoculations. I wasn't aware that the question was drugs, or no drugs. It is simply how do we deal with massive disease epidemics, and it is clear that philosophy is the deciding factor. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

So, what you are saying is that Racism is based not on race (we are all one race) but on skin color alone? So why again would it be wrong to stop identifying folks by the color of their skin. I chose ethnicity out of the apparently misplaced faith in humanity that somehow racism was tied into something other than blatant prejudice. Apologies to all those who were slighted by this misplaced faith. Edit - Spellchecking cant correct everything. Was that racist or just an unbalanced portrayal which has no more connection to the German people than it would to the Sudanese, or Timorians. I liked it because car sex is funny. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

quote:Trying to change what isn't working is not the same as pretending the problem doesn't exist. It may actually help change racism. Placebos can cure disease. Maybe I'm missing something. quote:Most people refer to themselves as "me" or "I", or in extreme cases "Dikiyoba." Most people also refer to their communities by stating the geographical place-name, or another commonly used variant (eg. Savin Hill, Piedmont, or Raleigh Hills). I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone respond to any sort of interrogative with the statement "Well, I'm white you know." Maybe I just haven't been around as much as you. Maybe. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

While it is convenient to say "white" and "black", it would be nice if we opted to identify races by cultural heritage rather than skin color. It is easy to do and helps to move us further away from the time honored tradition of equating skin color with worth. Thank you. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

1. Outsourcing of tech jobs overseas will decrease the value of technical degrees. 2. Immigration policies under development will reduce labor pool through imprisonment and deportation. 3. Glut of unfilled low wage, unskilled jobs will increase wages, to be filled by unskilled products of American secondary education. 4. Biggest growth industry in the next 15 years will be prisons. Race is on to build the better mousetrap. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Re: Massive taxes on the massively rich. Without thinking it through, in terms of actual income to taxing authorities, tax brackets should be as follows. Earnings <=$20,000; Tax at 5% $20,000 < Earnings <=$50,000; Tax at 15% $50,000 < Earnings <=$80,000; Tax at 35% $80,000 < Earnings <=$120,000; Tax at 50% Earnings over $120,000; Tax at 95% If there is no incentive to earn more than $120,000 then I would presume that people may seek jobs that they like, rather than those that earn them obscene gobs of cash. Because really, who needs more than $120,000 annually? This is all part of the Salmon for President 2008 campaign press release. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Nothing personal infernal666hate, but I am reading a lot of anger and hate in your posts. It's not becoming, and actually is a little off-putting. Good luck with your ever-developing crisis. Any news on the Sudan? It seems like every few hours something changes. This Yahoo News page indicates that things will soon change officially, but I've not found if that means anything in the real world to the real people affected by the war. Anyone have good knowledge on that aspect of things? -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

I would definitely not be reelected, as such an archaic system would not exist. It is likely that within a year of my election that various official proceeding would have begun that would be intended to remove me from power. Not that I would do anything drastic mind you. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

You don't counter VCH's statement that we have no ethical obligation (at the level of the individual) to save the planet from poverty, you merely take one sentence out of context and argue against it. At the level of the individual, which is where most of us have the greatest ability to act, there is a minimum ethical agenda (to live, and to die.) This agenda is forcibly enlarged by the presence of a society to include some of the duties to which you allude. I find it interesting that we are challenged to answer a question at the societal level, and are criticised when the answer is given at the individual level. They are different things, with different levels of expectation, but they do interact and influence each other (to some extent.) -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |
