I speak several English dialects, but can only understand two of them. I am also trying to establish a method of communicating with inanimate objects. It is not going well now, but I may be expecting too much of them. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

According to a vaguely insane interpretation of Genesis, the ideal population is two. Actually, it was one, but the one asked for another, so it became two. Everything else is overkill, and direct evidence of humankind rubbing the apple in His celestial face. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Alec - Is this your personal cross? The very idea that the entire world should have standard of living that is "First World" is horrible. The environmental costs would be staggering, and the globe would quickly become fubar. The ideal, to me, is to have a sustainable community where the potential income matches the cost of living. Crazy Struthers is always on the television crying over how a buck a day will feed, clothe, and hydrate an African village for a day. Or something along those lines. I know for a fact that I couldn't get that much value from my dollar in this country, so it stands to reason that the average indigent from a 3rd world country isn't going to need thousands of dollars a year to survive. Most African nations (surprisingly, given all the negative press) have responsible government and are working towards raising the poverty line, which is exactly the point of the question. As far as the parable goes, I say with 6 billion people on the planet we can afford to lose a few. Save up those euros until you have enough to go out to dinner. Wow, just think, that 60 euro meal cost enough to feed one subcontinental village for 3 years. Bleagh. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

Is there inbalance of wealth? Where is the cosmic scale that specifies that net worth has to be equal between two people/groups/countries/etc.?? I'm not so sure that this isn't more of a perceived problem than an actual issue that can or should be addressed. The real question, IMHO, is how to address the flow of money between rich and poor (again, people/groups/countries/etc.) It seems evident that money tends to flow from the poor to the rich, yet the poor generally still retain enough money to send more in the next go-around. I don't know the answer to this one, but I think it makes a heck of a lot more interesting question than the other one. Sorry stareye.... Edit - Putting the bee back in the but. quote:Yes, but most folks don't wait to recharge until the unit goes completely dead. There would be plug-ins at parking lots at work, at home, hotels, etc. Hell, it could become a cottage industry. Supply recharging stations so that coal or oil fired electric generating stations can re-supply your car with potential energy. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

I think the major issue is that our current increasing rate of energy consumption can not be sustained. It won't be possible to find a better way to get our fix and some behavioral changes will have to be made. While completely silly in most aspects, the book Ecotopia offers some ideas on sustainable energy use. Living near a west coast seaport, and frequently being on the water, I see quite a bit of merchandise being pushed in or out of port. It seems fairly energy inefficient to produce a product 7,000 miles away from where it is to be consumed. Another example, one of my personal favorites, is that Australia exported logs to Japan, which turned them into paper products, which were exported to Australia. All oceanic transportation costs (financial and environmental) were superfluous to the necessity of getting toilet paper to the masses of Australia. One US-centric method of reducing fuel use over the near-term would be to mandate beltways and near-city interstates be >75% HOV on a per-lane basis. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

When I was shooting at sealions the other day with a wrist rocket I had difficulty with aim. The ball bearings went the correct distance, but the design of the cup seemed underappreciated in that particular model I was using. In college we did similar roof-top experiments and ended up using a combo of NAPA bungee cords, surgical tubing, parachute cord, and piece of silk (for the cup). The limiting factor on distance was the ability to hold the anchor points stable. This may not be an issue with your application, but in the public setting we did not want to alter the building (the one we were on...) As far as projectiles go, I would recommend starting with kiwi fruit. Once the mechanics of the operation are smooth, try a tangelo or other orange. They would hurt a human but not injure them, and are unlikely to cause major damage to structures. Our construct was able to hit the broad side of a barn from about 140 yards, with the target being below the release point. Be sure you can trust any cohorts to keep silent, as inevitably you will be sought out for compensation. Consider yourself cautioned. There is a whole litany of things not to do, but common sense dictates they not get mentioned. There are too many insane peopel around these parts. -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |

So, how was the outdoors? I just had a maddening look for the dog's ball. Fruitless, and the dog was no help either. Dukiyola is at it again. Apparently not enough of that which is unholy and wrong has been trampled into the ground. So far Tyranicus has died. Again. Tune in next week for more dying, possibly Tyranicus, again. .nods. My Lord is it good to see more constructive discussion on this board. As a kosher hot dog eating American of English descent, I blame long dead rabbis (rather than the totality of the religious population) for some truly massive problems. It is obviously a Zionist plot to keep me from getting a better job and earning more money, thus ensuring that I stay in debt and subservient to the corporate juggernauts that dance with glee on my pain and misery. Don't people have more pressing things to be concerned about that Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Amin, Attila, or any number of amateur geneticists? ... Furthermore! Referring to "Jews" as a cohesive unit that can be addressed as one is offensive to me and possible rascist. If you have problems with an individual (ie Hitler) you can identify that person. But don't go categorizing vast groups of people as this or that. Just don't. ... Any bets on how soon I'll come to my senses and delete this whole thing? -------------------- quote: Posts: 4114 | Registered: Monday, April 25 2005 07:00 |
