I've always thought Snape was one of the most improbable characters in the book. He comes over as someone who never really grew up, but he's been accepted into a position of responsibility in the most important wizard school in the world. On top of that, I'm really confused by the fact that they don't seem to every learn any 'normal' subjects. How do they get on without a basic understanding of maths, for instance? -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! Polaris Boards: The System is Up. Perennially. His point was that he believes no-one has any right to stop him doing himself harm if he wants to. I think that any drugs that are legalised should first be ascertained to be in plentiful supply (especially the physically addictive ones), and cheaply (isn't half the problem with drugs that the druggies have to steal to be able to afford their fix?), with comprehensive and completely adequate rehab facilities available. Even granting that society has no right to stop the individual harming themself, society should be prepared to deal with the harm they have caused themselves when they want it dealt with. In the example where you swallow a thousand needles, for example, you should not be encouraged to do that in a society where, if you then apply for hospital treatment, there is nothing that can be done to repair the damage you have done to yourself. -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Patrick O'Brien yet. If you read the Hornblower series and liked it, well, his books have a similar setting, but they're much, much better. Also, a very long but very rewarding book is While Christ and His Saints Slept, which is about the first English Civil War. (The one between Stephen and Maude, not the Cavaliers and Roundheads one.) Lastly, Iain M Banks has written some amazing books. And some truly disturbing books, but some amazing ones as well. -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! Polaris Boards: The System is Up. TM, would you kindly stop linking David's bizzare opinions and his religious beliefs. I don't think even he thinks being Christian and agreeing with him are one and the same thing, and I certainly don't. Especially when he doesn't mention them, you have no reason to assume that all his beliefs are a product of his religon, and I would appreciate it if you didn't. -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! Quite a few people change their names just for comedy value. It can get irritating, but they find it amusing, and there's no real reason to stop them. If you see a post with an unrecognisable name attached, ignore the author and just pay attention to what they are saying... -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! Or down, as chess usually requires a longer period of concentration. On that note, I fence. If anyone wants to be stabbed, I'm your man. And fencing is a very good lazy sport: It requires little movement (although you have to be fast when you do move) and you have a break in between every single point, which means every 10-30 seconds. Plus a match is hardly long... -E- [ Wednesday, June 25, 2003 11:12: Message edited by: Omlette ] -------------------- Let them eat cake! Polaris Boards: The System is Up. Perennially. Sir David: Although your ideas are good, I would suggest we hardly need to lay down the law in general: Different RPs have different levels of seriousness, and thus can cope with different levels of stupidity. However, it is true that a co-operative mod would have been useful in several of our RPs. On that note, there's a feature I've seen on other boards where you can make a 'sub-board' which is in reality a single thread, but on which someone can be made a mod without giving them mod powers anywhere else. I don't suppose there's the remotest chance that's available on UBB? -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! Polaris Boards: The System is Up. Perennially. quote:A very good point. Despite the fact that the books are quite good (I won't give them more than that, there are several authors miles better but less popular because they sometimes leave more than a line aside for description...) the whole cheering-mass-of-zombies-wearing-pointy-hats-outside-the-shop thing makes me wonder if I'm not actually turning into a braindead 8-year old, as most of the fans seem to be...If it wasn't for that, I'd probably be more enthusiastic about them. Now hold on a second. The mods already have that power, and the boards aren't anything like you described. Just telling the mods it's OK to delete spam posts and ban spammers won't result in a reign of terror: all the current mods are reasonable people, none of them have particular grudges against any members, and I don't think we need to worry about them getting power-mad. TM: While there's nothing wrong per se with your introducing Rakshasi or Echoes into every RP you see, the fact that you don't wait until a convenient point in the already existing storyline when no-one will mind if you take over and completely rewrite it, and nor do you 'let' other people develop 'your' plot, not to mention the fact that you have a tendancy to spend a page flaming if anyone so much as suggests hey'd like to continue the origional plot. Which is, I suspect, what Drakey's talking about, at least in part. -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! Polaris Boards: The System is Up. Perennially. RPs aren't guaranteed doom, or at least not immediately. Once the original story is finished, things usually begin to break down, and most of the recent RPs have made the mistake of not introducing a large story early on, so people have dealt with whatever the first story was and then degenerated into chaos. If anyone remembers Join Us, they'll remember that it went on for almost 30 pages before the first story ended, and carried on being good for another 15 or so pages, until people started leaving completely and the only main plotline was hijacked and destroyed. My point is, the reason RPs recently haven't been so good is that the people who started them haven't bothered to create a lot of background, just given a directionless start and let people roam free. -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! Invisibility beats flying, I would suggest. While flying gets you places quicker, invisibility gets you places you couldn't get otherwise...I've also read the Gyges story. As for any special ability...being able to create pure gold would be nice. Sure, it'd lower the value slightly, but hopefully not enough that I didn't end up ludicrously rich... -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! Polaris Boards: The System is Up. Perennially. A point. Order Mage is not one I would have included in a list of Spidweb's 'brat pack'. He only has 200 posts, so he's hardly been spamming, and I think we can put up with the odd meaningless post from him, seeing as they are quite rare. (sorry, OM, but you do say pretty stupid things sometimes.) I think, however, that Felawynne may be overreacting a bit to all the spam. Spamming and meaningless posts aren't the same thing, and while the first is detrimental, the second is only irritating. The thing is that while a lot of people are spamming, every irritating post gets classed as spam. In concluision, no, Order Mage shouldn't go, as he hasn't been spamming. -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! Polaris Boards: The System is Up. Perennially. You make a fair point, but who says the boards exist only for intellectuals? While I can see why you'd like to see Shaper, FB et al banned, and can't deny that I wouldn't mind it either, they can't be banned just for being immature. Until they overstep the bounds of the CoC, (and utterly ruining RPs isn't against the CoC, unfortunately) they deserve to be here. Maybe the boards would be a nicer place without them, but the raison d'etre of Spidweb is a place to discuss their games, not a forum of intellectual discussion. Until the kids do something that damages that raison d'etre (although I would argue that some, SM for example, have...) they can't fairly be banned. Maybe it would improve the boards, but they don't deserve it. (Again, with the exception of SM.) Well, that's my £0.02. Feel free to rip it to shreds. -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! Maybe not, but I can remember certain posts by Corey that were about half a page long and contained not a single sentance that anyone could make sense of. While RoR does go over the top, Corey does need to improve his grammer. -E- -------------------- Let them eat cake! Polaris Boards: The System is Up. Perennially.
