THanks for beating the drum re. volunteering me for modship, but I hardly view myself as sufficiently non-partisan and can't keep up with the endless name changes. Vote for ef instead. She seems a nice sort of person. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

Actually, TGR, I read it in Forever Young, a book about physical immortalism, a few years back. I thought that bit more fun than the 'heads in vats' stuff, frankly. EDIT: BTW, I wasn't implying LF had monkey glands implanted in him or anything. From context, others were implying quite the opposite in fact. Wouldn't want to cause any unnecessary offence or anything.... ADDITIONAL EDIT: Nor do I wish to imply this topic is a load of old cojones in general either. By all popular accounts, Hitler had only one cojone. It is, of course, disturbingly possible to have more thn two. There was a custom in the early-20th century to implant them from monkeys as an anti-aging remedy (not that it worked), so hypothetically you could have more than "a few". The doctor that dreamed this idea up originally thought he could find human donors. It bears witness to his slim grasp on reality that he was surprised to find few or none. Is it mere coincidence that Sir David, often a determined focus of attention on these boards, chose flying as his superpower? He won't be insulted, then, if I say I associate invisibility with voyeurism, with associated specialist superpowers like the ability to climb drainpipes with one hand or those 1950s advertised x-ray spex-type vision. Would probably be called the Prowler, the Creep, or whatever.... I expect ZT was just insecure, hence his freaking out about the rejection of his compensatorily overpowered personas in RPs too. I actually read that thing about the Anarchy. Amusing thinking of Maude shinning down Oxford Castle's walls like that. It only ceased to be a prison a few years back - one of my mates was one of its last inmates. We used to go up the back wall where Maude escaped and throw cheery comment and cigarettes up to him. I don't think the analogy that started this holds up. If your partner wants you (assuming you're male, obviously) to put on a lead condom or something totally ridiculous that looks like Donald Duck, then that's giving pleasure to him or her, sort of what it's about. Then again, even drinking vinegar is tolerable in good enough company. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

Of course, you all realise this is just a disguised personality test, the 'invisibles' being introverts and 'flyers' extroverts, etc. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

As noted on a previous thread like this, the most potent and harmful drugs--opiates especially--are legal already. You just have to register as an addict and take them under controlled circumstances. They do this both in the interests of harm reduction, of reducing drug-related secondary crime, and of denying customers to the black market. Absurdly, it is the harmless drugs like cannabis (and I'd add E here, given the few deaths caused by it are down to impurities and dehydration, problems legalisation would counter) that don't have a big social impact that will remain outlawed longest. I want to thank Flavius for initiating this thread. I think (hope) it has gone a long way towards pulling General back up in a relatively constructive and non-acrimonious way. I guess I'd better curb my political rants and occassional sniping now too. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

I am a superhero already. I have the strange power to make blue flashing lights appear whenever I walk down the road wearing a balaclava and my underwear on the outside. The string vest gets a particular reaction. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

People's backgrounds are very formative - what is unthinkable from one is not from another. It's understandable, therefore, that George is alienated from the anti-globalisation miliants he uses for book promotions, etc, as he sees the globalisers as 'people we can do business with' in a typical posh clubby way. They probably all went to the same school. As to 'influencing decision-makers', if they are not taught that their policies have (personal) consequences, they are likely to continue doing what they like and trusting to spin doctors to 'sell policy' thereafter (Blair syndrome). Most people with that sort of mentality could do with boot-delivered reminders of the nature of reality generally and their own physicality particularly on occassion. I know George Monbiot, a very reluctant radical reverting to his upper class twit routes alongside the rather more influential Zac Goldsmith (The Ecologist). I remember chasing the spazzy then-Home Secretary Jack 'Boot' Straw down Brighton sea front some years ago too, forcing him to hide in a hotel. That's the sot of pressure they understand, not Georgey-boy crawling back up his own Oxbridge fundament. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

Of course, I am also keen to see the next in the Terminator series but the more the spend, the worse it gets. They had to water down the violence in T2--where cars got killed, not people, like the old A Team--so they could bring the classification down to 15. A 12 for T3, with five times that budget? I also thought the 'good' terminator bit in T2 indefensible, defusing the whole man v. machine theme that powered the original movie. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

It's prostitutes they have in Nevada, not Mormons - they even have broke-looking people dishing out call cards in the street, something I found particularly distasteful. I blame the Mob myself. They have Mormons in AZ though, walled up behind the Grand Canyon. Real Mormons too, fundamentalist, polygamous ones. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |
