Well, it wouldn't be the first time Republicans killed Americans to win power. You're recall they told Tehran the rescue helicopters were on the way to the US Embassy back in 1979. A mate there even hear it announced from the prayer towers! Of course, the sandstorm got 'em first and Carter was mainly doing it for a pre-election PR stunt too. No doubt Democras kill people vfor electoral advanag too. I recall a certain William Jefferson Clinton was very fond of death row spectaculars whenever his governorshp was at issue. Do Republicans kill thousands of people--yea, rich Americans in NYC--to stay in power? Well, they're capable of it, but I think post-9/11 oportunism is more of an issue here. How long is this 'novel'? Most so-described by wannabe authors are little more than short stories. If it's under 250,000 words, people won't nbuy it to read on planes and trains, so no publisher will look at it and you won't sell any. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

On Gandhi, I'd say he was happy to tactly ondone Muslim violence to force the British out, then play the 'reasonable middleman' in erms of picking up credit for independence. Gandhi nominally preached tolerance for both Moslems and dalits, but his power base was the Congress party, undisguised in their Hindu bias. Not surprising, therefore, that the fundamentalist Mosque-demolishing BJP now run India. As to my choice of world leader, you have my opinion on the lot of 'em above. It takes a special mentality to routinely brush aside the death of thousands or actively cause it as a simple matter of statecraft, and one I'd hope alien to humanity in general. By way of comparison, Jeffrey Dahmer killed less than a dozen people and is generally reckoned a monster. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

Do we believe Afkputz? The sentiments he expresses about the primacy of nuclear-weapon holding superpowers (and I can only think of one now, not counting China, a borderline case) sound exactly like those of the 'pseudo-Afkputz' that supposedly contributed previously. And they don't lock the doors at his boarding school? They can get out? Worrying. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

Gandhi was described as a "barrack room lawyer in a loin cloth". How moral is a mn that sets up thousands of people to be bludgeoned senseless just to make those doing it look bad? Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

This strikes me as paranoid. I hear too much of it and--no offence, I'm not saying you're one--too much of it from people (Palestinian or not)carrying "Death to Israel signs. Pre-9/11, I think the idea of shooting down fully-laden passanger jet would have ben unthinkable. Recall the KAL 007 fuss, which almost turned the Cold War hot. They were panicking, at one point even considering turning off GPS worldwide to stop the towers beig targetted, until they realised this would probably kill even more people worldwide. I would like proof Bush had foreknowledge of 9/11, even hours before it happened I think the relationship between Bush and bin Laden clans certainly would merit investigation, as it likely diverted attention from the 9/11 preparations on simple matters lik prioritisation of investigtion. I also think the political exploitation of 9/11 by an illegitimate president is way more horrifying and unjustified than the attack itself (yes, I do mean this). BTW, have you noticed that whilst Bush spouts about another "victory" in the war on terror, his inept Gulf War II 'diplomacy' and al-Qaeda's laest bombings have just kicked the US out of Saudi Arabia, bin Laden's prime war aim? Orwellian or wot? Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

I'd agree that some new people do take a while getting used to the posting conventions here + also that some of the old hands are unnecessarily intolerant of this and sometimes cruel in the fun they have in consequences. Still, no one seems to have treated DarkWind ht way (nor has s/he deserved it), so this move seems unnecesarily sensitive. Come back, DarkWind - and learn to avert your eyes when necessary if you must, as I doubt anyone here will change. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

You got it. Calvinism had the implication that those that didn't work hard and become prosperous were damned. As to the supposed 'woes of idleness', I'd sooner choose how to fill my own days than have my boss tell me how to. At least any ensuing boredom would be self-inflicted. I blame Calvinism myself. Someone said we only need 10% of the jobs done in this society for everyone to still get along fine in terms of basic needs. I myself am a drone. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

What is all this? It reminds me of the scene in that HP Lovecraft rip-off 'Night of the Demon' where they go visit the Satanist hillbillies all telling ach other: "Evil is my good, and good my evil". Frankly, none of them looking like a threat to anything except barnyard animals, but this is like being locked in the parlour vwith them. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

Respectfully, I thought Afpkuz was bing a bit incoherent too. S/he seems to think a nation that can go round the world trampling all others is commendable + that Iraq is "our" (presumably the US's from context) "country", so so much for the 'liberation' of the people that actually live there.... I think Ghost got up to a quintruple post once, though am unsure whether this was an accident or a protest (he was calling himself 'Spam' at the time). And, Imban, do you think IceFireDrake-thingy would actually suffer any harm if he landed on his head? Hardly the seat of his mentation, such that it is.... I heard one of the Scandanavian countries banned 'ET' as they felt the bit where ET gets it soured relations between child and parent. I was amazed some of the religious groups didn't get more upset by the blasphemously resurrecting ugly alien and bicycle-powered parody of the Ascention in it. Still, they never objected to Rambo crucified in the pit of slime either. :o Oh god - this makes it sound like I like schmaltz like 'ET'. In fact what pees me off most with Spielberg is the same as with Stephen King. Last I heard, the latter actually uses market research data to make his characters as utterly typical as possible in an attempt to have the widest possible audience identify them. At best, it makes me wish the damn monsters would eat them quicker just to get rid of them and at worst, makes me want to waste my time on something else. 'Bland uber alles' could be Hollywood's watchword - generic action, generic plots, generic emotions, even generic (thin, healthy, usually young) bodies - and all down to protecting investments from the lowest common denominator unimaginative. *Pukes*.
