I agree with you. Though the bible did say it. Wasn't one of the first sentences: In the beginning there was 'logos' (in the greek version that all later translations refered to). It probably is not easy to translate, 'logos' = the ultimate or the absolute consciousness. -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1828 | Registered: Saturday, January 11 2003 08:00 |

God has a beard too. So do I. EDIT: Last time I checked, the poll as 58% for and 63% against. Have some of you been voting twice, in best Irish tradition? [ Friday, May 09, 2003 06:25: Message edited by: X ] Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

Well that was not what I had in mind when I started the whole thing. I thought about world leaders that have had a deep and lasting influence on human history and found that those who made the deepest imprints were the spiritual leaders. -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1828 | Registered: Saturday, January 11 2003 08:00 |

^Very devout. Someone once said "never take on the Brigade of Guards, the National Union of Miners, or the Catholic church" so I will offer no criticism of His Holiness. If you'd like an honest vote, how about Ahmed III? A very enlightened man for his time, he tried very hard to avoid wars, introduced western reforms to his Empire, and nearly crushed the Russian tsar when he finally couldn't avoid war anymore. He also had a nice beard. -------------------- ... Posts: 647 | Registered: Wednesday, February 19 2003 08:00 |

But for his glaring lack of a beard, it is clear that Babar the Elephant would unquestionably be the greatest world leader of all time. Posts: 1000 | Registered: Thursday, October 11 2001 07:00 |

Don't rip off 8-bit without doing it properly (aka, you forgot to insert "with Febreeze of idiotic strength +42"). I find it mildly entertaining that Mohammed Oma is beating George Bush. I'm also not particularilly surprised. :P -------------------- We're all amazed but not amused By all the things that you said you'd do. On the subject of Babar: Is it pronounced: Bah - Bar. (Bah as in "bad") or: Bar - Bar (both as in "bar") This came up a couple of days ago with some mates. It is of utmost importance. -------------------- Riot Shields Voodoo Economics It's just business Cattle prods And the IMF I trust I can rely on your vote Posts: 530 | Registered: Sunday, September 1 2002 07:00 |

On the kids' 'toons over here, it's always pronounced as the latter, though I don't know this wpronounciation was ever authorized by the publishers, who I believe were French anyway. Posts: 2333 | Registered: Monday, January 7 2002 08:00 |

I'm always rather distrustful of the hirsute. This is directly related to the fact that my father numbers among them and I think as he does and greatly resemble how he looked when he was my age. Posts: 1000 | Registered: Thursday, October 11 2001 07:00 |

I've always heard it pronounced "Bah-bar," and there's only one R in the word anyway. That could just be the usual English butchery of words, but I'm inclined to accept it as the majority opinion. Unless, of course, the elephant also happens to be a Barbar. —Alorael, who is also not surprised to see Oma winning, even if he isn't actually a person. That's a sign of knee-jerk liberalism, though, and that's not any better than any other mindless prejudices. Even Bush is better than a zealot. Okay, Bush is better than other zealots. Slightly. In Germany, it was Babar, if I remember correctly, as "Barbar" is the word for barbarian. But regardless. If you speak of fictional characters, surely you must concede that the greatest leader would be Ming the Merciless. He may not have done so well ruling Earth, but he seemed to have a pretty firm grip on Mars. Note the lovely beard. -------------------- ...
