Icshi, thanks for the link. I'll check it out. I think you might as well forget the idea of Jeff buying the rights for any work. He's got a small company as it is without getting into the mess of buying rights. -------------------- quote:Random Jack Vance Quote Manual Generator Apparatus (Cugel's Saga) Posts: 604 | Registered: Sunday, June 20 2004 07:00 |

There are piercing crystals. I played as the Romans so I needed them quite a bit. You may find some lying around, but I can't remember where. But you can buy. Where? Vanarium, I think. Faerie Bazaar I'm pretty sure. But my info is a bit hazy. -------------------- quote:Random Jack Vance Quote Manual Generator Apparatus (Cugel's Saga) Posts: 604 | Registered: Sunday, June 20 2004 07:00 |

Great picture. Romans in Mars would be great. I think if it were written in the old style pulp it would be terrific. There's a series by Turtledove called The Lost Legion about a Roman Legion that is transported to his world of Videssos. Neat stuff. I've posted earlier what I think could happen with the Romans in N2: a small band managed to make it through and has to survive in the world beyond the gate, offering possibilities for the Romans to be the underdogs and have to survive by making the right alliances. But N2 could very well deal with a subject outside of Roman interest. It might deal with different factions of faeries from different mythologies as they co-exist with each other. -------------------- quote:Random Jack Vance Quote Manual Generator Apparatus (Cugel's Saga) Posts: 604 | Registered: Sunday, June 20 2004 07:00 |

Alec: Do you think there's something in that Starbucks coffee? Just a coincidence that so many who gather around there have those thoughts? Probably not the coffee, I guess. I don't know how this fashions get started. A couple of people think it's fine and a bunch of others follow like sheep. I suppose it's unavoidable to fall into pits of blinding following, and some are fine, but others. . . Haven't read that poem so I can't comment. But as far as Elliot. . . in my opinion he wasn't that much of a good poet to begin with. I sometimes wonder if his work just fell in with the "right" crowd. Sign of the times and all that. Stug: I liked your poem, man. -------------------- quote:Random Jack Vance Quote Manual Generator Apparatus (Cugel's Saga) Posts: 604 | Registered: Sunday, June 20 2004 07:00 |

Alec, did you see "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised"? What did you think? About this post. I liked T.S. Eliot for about a semester way back then. Like Auden. Yeats. Lorca. Neruda. Sor Teresa de la Cruz. And most of the rest is medieval poetry which is what I end up reading if I pick a poetry book, from whatever country. If I can understand it, great. Oh, and here is a NOT poem: Life is a game, dice rolling at the edge of infinity Life is a song, Seraphim raining stoic dances. Life is a mystery, a Rubick's cube of kaleidoscopic fancies. Life is a jest, forgotten gods lying in rest. Life is a novel, a love poem in-between lines of hate. Life is a film, hope trapped in celluloid loops. Life is a painting, surrealistic chiarouscuros imprisoned with friends. Life is a memory, a wondrous moment unstuck in time. Life is a dance, justice swinging with discord. Life is a dream, a moebius strip illusions and regrets. Life is a thought, spontaneous combustion of a muse. Life is a smile, a mighty stream split in eddies of apathy. Life is a tear, an ocean of despair drowned by a serendipitous snowflake. Life is a lie, a fairy-tale princess raped by her make-believe fate. Life is a promise, a fallen knight jousting his shattered faith. Life is a candle, a spurious candle extinguished by foolish deeds. Life is hide and seek between sorrow and bliss. Life is a simple word: Life. -------------------- quote:Random Jack Vance Quote Manual Generator Apparatus (Cugel's Saga) Posts: 604 | Registered: Sunday, June 20 2004 07:00 |

I think that karma in the board is like in life. It may go up and down, many times without you being able to do a darned thing about it. But, generally, if you are nice enough it will swing your way eventually. On the other hand you can be the nicest person and no one will notice or will treat you like crud just 'cause you're an easy target. You may be a total jerk-a-doodle and people will somehow respect you for it. That's life. It's a shame you got so many negative votes at first, ben, you seemed like a good guy. Maybe it was the political views. Maybe it was someone who had an inordinate hatred for the number 4808 because it reminded that person of the number of peeled pickles that were thrown at him/her by a marauding army of enhanced mandrils after that person tried to rob the Fort Knox (yeah those critters are one of the many defenses the place has, just goes to show you that James Bond doesn't teach you everything you need to know in life) I've voted for some people based on the posts I saw of them throughout the boards. Some I couldn't vote for because the option was disabled. In the end, though, it's all nothing more than a signal, if that at all. Who you are and how people see you is reflected in what you write and they write about you, if anything. I guess kind of like life in a way too. I'll babble no more. There's the cutest little ruisegnor flying in my window and I'm gonna se if I can teach it to sing the Ninth. How do people feel about the two party system in the U.S? Evidently it has been your staple since the dawn of Democracy over there. But I was wondering if you were aware of groups of people (increasing or not) that would like to create a third party that could gain prominence. I'm think about such independents such as Perot who was able to achieve a certain degree of popularity. It seems to me that these days when the line that divides Republicans and Democrats seems to get fuzzier all the time (at least it seems so from outside the country) if there is a possibility of a third party growing strong as years go by. In Venezuela there is a bit of a urine drinking fetish--don't think of it as a you know what fetish because it isn't that way and by the gods in the firmament that is a topic that has nothing to do with this!--by that I mean, a good number of people do it. I've no idea of the percentage, but it comes up in conversations from time to time. Also, you will see people going to what passes for talk shows here and speaking of the wonderful properties of urine drinking. Also, the Curanderos(as), think """witch""" doctors, also offer urine as part of the cures. They also offer a bunch of other really freaky stuff. Egh. What I have heard is that it's okay if you drink it as long as it is yours. I had an anecdote about this but shall not say anything. You will sleep better not knowing that, and I shall sleep better knowing you don't know. But I've heard it tastes worse than warm beer. Acidic and needless to say warm. I'm glad, Rosy, that here we don't have too many goths. I am so glad. So glad. There are a few, but not quite like the U.S. Now maybe some Curandera(o) somewhere will invent another magical cure that mixes urine with blood (both your own, of course, 'cause otherwise it will be unhealthy and unsanitary) And I wouldn't be surprise if I stop by one of our shabby bars and they give me urine on the rocks with a little rum and they call it some catchy name like El Chiguire Atomico, or something. Blech. -------------------- quote:Random Jack Vance Quote Manual Generator Apparatus (Cugel's Saga) Posts: 604 | Registered: Sunday, June 20 2004 07:00 |

I don't think Jeff is planning on producing games quicker than he does. It seems he has established a working routine that fits his lifestyle. I don't know. Making a living out of sharewar seems rather difficult. But, on the other hand, despite whatever criticisms his games have gotten, they are still some of the best products in shareware arena. I got interested in his stuff way back in. . . 94, I think. I fell in love with E1 because it was one of the most elegant games I had seen in ages. It reminded me of the RPGs I loved as lad, like Ultima (which evidently inspired him, as he once stated) If you take a look at the other RPGs that are shareware, well. . . frankly most of them suck rotten eggs. They are awful. Some have "nice" graphics, but terrible gameplay, or dumb stories, or, well, a complete lack of balance. I think SW has a very long future indeed. I should it does. -------------------- quote:Random Jack Vance Quote Manual Generator Apparatus (Cugel's Saga) Posts: 604 | Registered: Sunday, June 20 2004 07:00 |

Blaspheme: your situation with Marihuana is similar to here, although here people kind of know what it is, but you still see some smoking it on the streets and the bars. I wonder is you have troubles with Russia? Or a good business. I would also be glad to see China being known for more than just all the pirated products. Do they sell them on the streets normally? Here people just don't buy original stuff. CD and DVDs, games all of them they buy pirated. And I don't mean on the underground, oh no! On the stores. They even put the chip on your PS or PS2, very cheaply, so you can buy more pirated products. We even have what we call, "Buhoneros" (street peddlers is the closest term I can think in English) These guys are the worst. We have a huge unemployment, about 18% or so. But those who work, a huge percentage, fluctuating in the 30 range, are Buhoneros. They put little shops on the streets, a table with the products. Fake pants from I know not where, clothes, all fake Designs. CDs by the bundle, DVDs like you wouldn't believe, games all over the place. Then, on the highways, since we have so much traffic all the time (Rush hour as a concept doesn't exist here) you will see men and women wlaking in between the cars with the products: DVDs of movies which came out THAT WEEKEND on the U.S, already there and ready for your consumption. Also books. They usually carry like 5 or 6 titles, what EVERYBODY reads (we are not, in any way shape or form a literature oriented country. Not. At. All) and those books are also pirated copies, usually printed in Comlombian presses. They are really cheap. If you think in Dollars. 10 thousand Bolivares (Bs.) which are about 3 or 5 bucks, depending if you think black market dollar or controlled dollar (our government has, for the last year and a half, controlled the exchange of dollars. You, basically can't buy it or Euros) Minimun wage here is about 2,500 Bs. So it means you need to work four hours MW to buy one of them. But those products are for the Middle Class, who make about 2 million Bs a month per household. (that is about 600 or so hundred to 1000 dollars for a Middle Class family) BTW, Blaspheme, what is the MW in China. How do slaries work in general? For something more serious: child prostitution? Problem over there? Here it is. It is not widely publiziced, but it exists. Anecdote: I was told some months ago that there was activity of that kind happening a couple of blocks from where I live. I couldn't believe. My county's mayor is supposed to be one of the "good" guys who is actually doing something right! Right. I decided to check. I went to the place and saw nothing. I went on another night, and, indeed, I was offered some services by a girl who couldn't have been older than eleven. I left, needless to say. It was sickening! Children are also seen in too many streets asking for money. Small children, 5 or 6 or less. Nowadays it is difficult to find many semaphores without at least a little kid asking for money. That's not counting the large amount of adults who do so too. A few months ago I stopped seeing this,. but before that moment, and for about a year or so, there was something very peculiar: A proliferation of women (all looking very Andine, from the Andes region of Venezuela), each of them with a little baby in their backs/arms, all asking for money. Then, from almost literally night to day, I saw no more. Blaspheme: You know Lovecraft too! Oh happy day. -------------------- quote:Random Jack Vance Quote Manual Generator Apparatus (Cugel's Saga) Posts: 604 | Registered: Sunday, June 20 2004 07:00 |

Eldiran: maybe you can see it, not from the point of view of honor, but from the point of view of cold balance. Neo offered to get rid the Matrix of the Virus, this was a task the computer desired and let's say it calculated that his chances were good enough. In turn, it stopped the invasion Zion. As you saw there was another Matrix at the end and the Architect did not promise that he was going to leave the humans alone for ever. It seems that, at best, what was attained was a temporal appeasement. -------------------- quote:Random Jack Vance Quote Manual Generator Apparatus (Cugel's Saga) Posts: 604 | Registered: Sunday, June 20 2004 07:00 |

Kel-Aziz: Ah! Pablito! . . ay mama! TGM: Sorry, man. I'm going to join in the general optimism for this thread. So far we have been able to share opions without going insane. Take a peek at the other political thread to see a few opinions that could have been expressed. . . better. spy.there: there are alternatives, but there are so many opportunists waiting for a chance that it looks more like a cesspool of mediocrity and fecal politicians than anything. A few stand out. I particularly like a governor, a former general manager our big oil company and a former head of our supreme court. They seem to be kind of capable people our country would need if we get rid of the current president. As it stands out, if there are elections, it has been promised that the Opposition will elect a single candidate to go against Chavez. If this happens, there is hope. If not, and in this country it is entirely possible that an indepent will go his own way even though he knows he will lose just to take votes away from the opposition, then. . . You see those who love Chavez do no change their minds. It is the other percetange that is at stake. Blaspheme: Thank you as usual for all your comments. This has been rather interesting. I disagree with quite a few of the policies of your government, but I am supremely happy to be able to hear them from someone who lives there. It seemed rather drastic the death penalty for drug use. It sickens me thaqt law works that way. Is there a reason for this? Is this the government's "strong hand" in order to purge the country of drugs? What do people think about it? As for drugs, is the problem similar in any way to that of the 19th century? I mean with the Opium coming from India the British (I suppose now it would be other foreign powers) being involved? As for the way tax works. Something all too similar happens in my country. People with money don't pay taxes. It used to be like that for years and years. Now the Venezuelan version of the IRS is after every penny they can get so that the government receives more money than they already got. Ah! And the money does not go to social endeavours of any kind. Drugs in my country exist and they do little to stop them. Sometimes they make a big deal about some cargo of cocaine that they have captured, but few and far between. For the most part, as I mentioned previously, we still work as the way-station between S.A and the rest of the world. I still can't get out of my amazement for the fact that, if I understood right, if I am caught in China smoking a joint I get killed? A bit of a more, if you will, superficial question: Jackie Chan? The man? -------------------- quote:Random Jack Vance Quote Manual Generator Apparatus (Cugel's Saga) Posts: 604 | Registered: Sunday, June 20 2004 07:00 |

A thousand thoughts by Kel. Happy day! Blaspheme: Spamming are short, pointless posts. For example, if my post had only been something like: "Yay" it might have been considered spamming. ¿Quien eres?
