I am looking directly at the scripts. If you do what I told you to, then I'm pretty sure that it has to work. I was told that as long as there are BoE scenarios, there will be annual BoE contests. They will happen at the same time as BoA contests, now. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. I started playing the games with Avernum 1 shortly after it came out, whenever that was. I think it was '99 or '00. I played BoE briefly in '00, making a scenario late in '00 (I think). Then I wandered away from Blades until this year, but I kept playing the other SW games. Finally, in Feb '04, I joined the community in anticipation of the impending release of BoA and have been around ever since. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Okay, Wade, I'm going to say this once instead of ten times for each of the ten times that you've done this so far. Try to stay on the topic of the thread and not just post on whatever seems to flow into your mind at the moment you're reading. This will make your posts make much more sense than they do right now. The only BoA scenario that you can play without registering is Valley of the Dying Things. This should be relatively obvious from the documentation and help messages that come with the demo of the game. The answers to most of the rest of your questions should be similarly obvious. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. You have to be making a god party. But I am informed that the God Sword is too powerful, in that a god PC will do more than 32K damage about 50% of the time with the sword equipped, and more than 32K of damage is too much for the game to handle, so the game reduces that to 0, meaning that you do nothing half the time. This will be fixed for the next version of the HLPM. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Well, if one could find Barzahl's graphic, one could probably copy it and place it with the number of the PC's graphic in the GF2 data files. I tried to find it and failed, though. The place to look is in the folder Geneforge 2 Files. On a Mac, open Geneforge 2 Char Graphics with ResEdit or another resource editing program. On a PC, it's probably just a .bmp file. Either way, you have to make a copy of Barzahl's graphic and replace your PC's graphic with it. However, this is not guaranteed to work and it may screw up your copy of GF2, so back EVERYTHING up before you even attempt it. Also, again, I was not able to find Barzahl's graphic, but I didn't really know what I was looking for. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Yes, people will play your scenario if it is ever made. Speaking of encouraging community involvement in Blades, isn't it about time for a 7th Contest? I suppose I should wander off to the Lyceum and prod someone about this. EDIT: June, I am informed. To coincide with the BoA contest. The drake fang is in a secret passage northeast of Blinlock. Walk due north from the watchtower just southeast of the town and you'll be near the secret passage. I don't know, but I think that Jeff should tell us as the game progresses. Since we are making scenarios in the Avernum universe, it would be nice to know which areas of the world he is going to describe in greater detail so that if we are thinking about making a scenario about that aspect of the world, we would know that it could become un-canonical on the release of this next game. He doesn't have to say much, but just a very brief and general, "This game will take place on Vantanas fifty years after A3, and it will concern relations between the Empire and the native flora and fauna of the continent," would be nice. Not that I think he's going to, but still. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Go back to Kevin in Marralis. Say these things in this order: 1. "May we speak with you about Marralis?" 2. "How are you managing?" 3. "Who's been so lucky?" 4. "Do you think Pangle will help us?" That will set flag (3,10) to 1. Then go back to Pangle's Hut and say to him: 1. "Kevin sent us. He thought you might be able to help us." You will only have this dialogue option once. You may have already said this, so it may not be an option. Say this, or if you can't, just proceed. Next, say: 1. "Do you know anything about the curse in the vale?" 2. "What about the School of Magery? Do you know anything about that?" The only way that you won't have those last two options is if you haven't said "Do you think Pangle will help us?" to Kevin or if you have already solved the curse of the Vale. If you go back to talk to Kevin again, that should pretty much solve everything. If this doesn't work, I'm not sure what to do. Nine Variations on Point B was a scenario that mused essentially on this. It constructed a scenario backwards, from the obstacles to the plot instead of the other way around, and I think it was almost successful in doing so. Ultimately I think there is no one formula that pleases everyone. Some people like the tactical challenge of complicated, difficult combat. Some people like puzzles. Some people like choices and role-playing those choices. Some people like graphics. Some people like other elements. Most people like some combination of the above elements. I still enjoy getting a new ruleset, so to speak, and new monsters, new spells, new abilities, and new situations create interesting combat for me. Some people just don't like combat at all. I like puzzles that are obviously puzzles but are difficult to solve. Some people like puzzles that are more subtle. I like pretty graphics (I admit it) but not so much that I need something more elaborate than the Avernum engine. I've been musing on the difference in reactions to VoDT and ASR. Some people worship ASR and loathe VoDT. Some people worship VoDT and hate ASR. I think the difference may be that the ones who liked ASR care more about choices, plotline, moral dilemmas, and deeper meanings. The ones who liked VoDT care more about exploration and combat. VoDT is an unashamed dungeon crawl, whereas ASR is more plot-driven. The Exile and Avernum Trilogies tend to lean more towards the VoDT style of design, whereas Geneforge has so far tended more towards ASR. Hrm. More musing to come later. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. 1. Yes. You have to talk to Kevin in Marralis before you can buy the papers, though. Then ask Pangle about the curse in the valley. 2. You have to talk to some other beings and find out from them what the Chief Spider can give you that would be useful. Keep exploring the school, specifically the southern part. 3. Elram is in Vale Infestation, a hidden (I think) town just south of Marralis. 4. As far as I can tell, you don't need to open any gates in Holding Cells to free Pythras. You need to go to the east part of the level, and walk up into an elevated room. Then you use a control panel (with the information that Pythras gives you, namely that the password is "Quark." Hopefully all this is accurate, but it's been a while. I'm basing this off the scripts and opening the game in the editor. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. You know, come to think of it, it's the world itself that makes Jeff's games enjoyable. The "journey to the land of the dead to fetch an artifact of great power" thing is as cliche as one can get, but that land of the dead in Nethergate is pretty cool. I don't really care about the mission — it's fun in its traditional old way, but not innovative — but I do care that Annwn in Nethergate just looked cool and had a good atmosphere and an appropriate vision of a Celtic afterlife. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens.
