I'm lucky - the 25% HECS increase won't affect me when it goes through (and I'm sure it will, even though our uni senate is still 'in debate' on that point).

I'm going the way of Thuryl (including the 30min commuting). Parents are very helpful, but yes, there is the guilt factor from spending money that isn't my money, and a consequent desire to save as much as possible. OTOH, final year + honours = no time for a casual job. I'll be able to get something decent next year, quite probably in a large impersonal firm on the other end of the continent, and start paying off my uni debt to the government.

Oh?

I feel the same about Pachebel's Canon. Too long in one shop with a repeating cd and tinny speakers is enough to make me want to go back in time and strangle Pachebel.

I love a great many composers. The ones I lean most towards are the romantics and movie score composers. Sibelius, Dvorak, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Ennio Morricone, Hans Zimmer...

Favourite pieces in no particular order:
-The Firebird Suite, Igor Stravinsky
-Symphonies No 1&2, Sibelius
-Symphonies No 6&9, Dvorak
-The Planets, Holst
-too many soundtracks to list
-and a great deal of others

I've played on and off the flute for fourteen years and the violin for ten, both in an amateurish sort of way. The pieces I'm most familiar with are all orchestral, that being where I get most of my playing done. "Peter and the Wolf", "Der Rosenkavalier", Beethoven, Brahms, etc, etc.

Y'know, sometimes I think people who enter into their first relationship later on in life (say, in their 20s) are better off. They seem to make a better match for themselves than those who start dating as soon as their hormones kicked in.

She hated them.

The SCPD's blind indifference, the Agency's brutality.

But most of all she hated the gangs. After all, it hadn't been the cops who had supplied her father with goon. It hadn't been the Agency that had let him drink it, and drink it, and drink it. It hadn't been the SCPD that had made her scared at night, scared of her father, scared of the things the goon made him do and threaten to do. The Agency hadn't forced them into the streets, away from the house and the father and the hand that left its mark on their bodies. And the SCPD hadn't left her sister cold in an alley, too young for the things she'd been forced to do to survive, the things that had killed her in the end.

It was the gangs. All the gangs.

And so she vowed one day, shivering and sweating and stinking of vomit in an alley not so very different from the one her sister had died in, to end the gangs. In her opiate-induced euphoria she believed she could do it, that she could avenge her father and her sister and herself and everything would be alright, was alright. She knew she would fail, in the nightmares that followed, and so she called herself Bitter, for that was what she was, and she was known on the streets she frequented as Bitter, the girl with a look of cunning and hate in her eyes who fed her addiction through thieving and informing.

She knew everything on the streets. And she sold that information to whomever could do the most harm.

A street, two more, and Korarda caught up with Khatereh - her pace was unhurried, though purposeful. She gave no indication that she knew of the young nobleman who followed her, but in truth she was aware of little else. All her attention was focused on Korarda. For a moment, she experienced doubt. His father was honourable, as much as any politician could be. But she did not trust him. Yet she did not think even he would send a beloved son against a mage. And again, there was Sadri.

Ah, Sadri.

And if she did not trust Ardavan, she held even less faith in Sadri. Produce evidence that he had commanded the failed assassination attempts, and she would be believed. Sadri would lose his office and whatever political standing he had. Merely speak the truth, and her word was evidence in itself. But it would achieve nothing, only drive her undeclared enemy to the ground and destroy the chance that he might lead her to the truth of Lord Fahrang.

She wished the murderers were, indeed, the Arcadinans. It would make it simpler. For her, for Kliste. But life was rarely simple.

Khatereh passed through the gates of the Order, into the familiar halls that had served as her home for more years than many would have believed. The noise of the streets dropped away, the silence filled instead with the stately reserve of the bookish and - for the most part - elderly. Making her way through the magnificent yet conservative entrance hall, she idly wondered how long it would be before Korarda gathered the nerve to enter.

Trenton whistled tunelessly to himself.

The caravaner ran one hand down the flank of his newly acquired horse. He hawked and spat casually, then nodded. "Aye, he'll do. Three hunned fer the lot, an' not a copper risti more."

Trenton smiled. "Seven hundred."

"Four. I've a friend down Marrick way'll take the grey for 'is lady."

"Six. They're well trained. I'm doing you a favour."

"Four an' thirty. Give 'em to me for that, an' the little lady'll thankee."

Trenton blinked. He nodded cautiously.

"Aye!" The caravaner gave him a gaptoothed grin. "Ye go'n now. The little lady, she be dancin' fer joy. I'll make sure to tell 'er, the grey's special for 'er. Why, go see 'er now, and she'll give ye a fresh baked cake."

"I'll do that." Trenton accepted his money. So. The Klisten mage wanted to see him, and urgently. The mage was not the most frequent employer, but she paid well.

You want to know the most annoying thing? When a guy gets a crush on a girl, he just can't seem to get his mind out of the gutter. Every joke he tells (and with some of my friends, that's every time he opens his mouth) takes on a blindingly obvious and usually dirty sexual connotation.

I'm rather partial to Rumanian looks. Dark hair, grey eyes, muscled but not bulging. (Having said that, my boyfriend is about as far from this physical ideal as it's possible to get, and I wouldn't change him for the world.) At least as intelligent as I am, able to put up with my idiosyncrasies - because if he isn't, he's likely to run screaming from me within the week. Other than and including that, it's all about personality. And that is too complicated a thing for me to describe.

quote:
Full Frontal Nudity Custer:

The only time at which I would get married is whenever I'm absolutely sure nothing is going to go wrong with the relationship.

That is an unrealistic expectation. People change, feelings fluctuate, tempers rise. Even the most perfect of soulmates can have a serious argument.

The mage walked slowly in the shade of the great trees of the Market. Her robes marked her as a wizard, and the medallion hung about her neck proclaimed her as a member of the First Circle. That combination was not often seen in the common streets, but the merchants and customers that frequented the Market did not spare her a second glance - Khatereh was an exception. She was well known - as were all eight members of the First Circle - but unlike the rest, she was known for her gentle manner and humility. A humble mage. It was almost an oxymoron. And so the commoners liked her, and did not fear her. And because her hair was silver and her body brittle with age, they took care that they did not impede her.

Khatereh's progress was slow, for though she was aloof and the commoners left her well alone, the Market was busy. The Festival was coming soon. For all that the threat of war hung like stormclouds over the heart of Kliste, there would be riots if ever the Festival was cancelled. Khatereh paused, and passed beneath the wooden sill of a cleric's office.

The cleric was busy and spared no glance for the newcomer. Only when the mercenary's arm was set and the coin exchanged hands did he nod in greeting. "Member Khatereh. Do you need more of the cream?"

Khatereh smiled. "It does wonders for my joints on cold nights. You wield the true magic, brother."

"And it has taken me this many years to make you see that." Chuckling, the cleric stepped into a back storeroom. "But come, and I'll make up some more of the cream." Once they were inside and hidden from the main room, his demeanour turned serious. "We couldn't find him."

"I did not think so. But he is dead?"

"Near as we can tell, Sitruc is dead. It is said that one called Llywann killed him."

"And with him goes every chance of finding his employer. I do not like this, brother. Everything points to the Arcadinans. And yet they have denied responsibility, calling the border skirmish unprovoked."

"You did not expect them to do otherwise, did you? If they were at all serious about that claim, they should have chosen a different target. Ardavan is the least likely of all the lords to let such an attack on his family go unpunished. And he has enough influence amongst the others that they will side with him."

"And that is what troubles me." Khatereh's face was graced with a rare frown. "If they wished war, they chose the right target. The Arcadinan Court claims innocence, and I feel that their claim is honest. I cannot explain it."

"What would you have us do? We have lost the trail of the assassin."

"We have another to follow. The last one was sent by Lord Sadri. I believe he is not unconnected with this present investigation."

"Sadri?" The cleric's expression betrayed surprise. "Are you sure?"

"The boy's mindblock was imperfect. The impression of his orders was very strong." Khatereh's expression was mild, but her gaze was steel as the cleric asked her what she was going to do about it. "Send Trenton to me when he arrives. I do not dabble in Court politics, but Sadri's interference is becoming a nuisance."

The cleric had seen that expression before. He did not bother advising caution. In a matter of minutes he had finished mixing and bottling the cream, handing it to Khatereh with a smile. They stepped out of the storeroom.

Khatereh paused as her eyes swept the room. Three people moved about the room, and her piercing gaze settled on one in particular. There seemed to be nothing out of the ordinary with him: a youth, rich enough, with a sword strapped to his waist. He watched her with mild curiosity that showed uncommon poise in one of his years. Khatereh bowed slightly. "Lord Korarda."

She walked into the streets under his astonished gaze.

"My investigation is not yet over. The signs are not clear."

Lord Ardavan made a gesture of annoyance. Pivoting on one heel, he put his back to Khatereh and strode to the window. The coloured glass streamed strange shades across his features. Tall, austere, mouth set in a hard line that was the greatest warning he ever gave those who angered him, Ardavan said nothing as he gazed at the scene etched in glass. The set of his shoulders betrayed his impatience without words.

Khatereh watched this discourtesy without comment. If anything, her gaze grew milder and her expression gentler. It was not for nothing that she was often the one assigned to dealing with the arrogant and easily riled Klisten nobles; her quiet manner was a shield that the nobles could not penetrate, and hence she was less able to be manipulated by them. "The death of Lord Fahrang was well planned and executed. Very little was left to follow."

"The evidence found by the Judicars implicated the Arcadinans. The Court has accepted this verdict. You do not?"

"My investigations are not yet over." Khatereh hesitated. "And you do not accept it either, my lord, or you would not continue financing my efforts."

Ardavan's expression was neutral. "My brother has been murdered. Do you not think I would spare no expense to find his killer?"

Silent, Khatereh bowed in acknowledgement of Ardavan's loss.

"The Arcadinans were involved - they have pushed us to war. But I would find the hand that held the blade."

"To the best knowledge my informers can gather, that one is already dead. He was a trained killer, one of many shadow kindred."

For a long moment, Ardavan said nothing. But he was not appeased. "And the hand that commanded this common assassin? That one also I claim." The lord turned away. "I grow weary for results, Member Khatereh, and my men restless. Time is not with you."

Khatereh accepted the warning and threat as she did all else: with the dignity gained only with power and age. She bowed once more and took her leave of the lord who now stared, lost in thought, into the golden liquid swirling around the goblet held in one white-knuckled hand.

Hesperus also happens to be the God of the Evening Star, or just the God of Evening. From a quick googling:

quote:

Greek Hesperos,  also called Vesper,   in Greco-Roman mythology, the evening star, son or brother of Atlas. He was later identified with the morning star, Phosphorus, or Eosphorus (Latin: Lucifer), the bringer of light. Hesperus is variously described by different authors as the father of the Hesperides (the guardians of the golden apples) or of their mother, Hesperis.

In this context, the poem may in fact be referring to the onset of evening and rest, rather than to Venus (Aphrodite). I would be more inclined to interpret it this way, since Aphrodite was the goddess of sexual love and beauty.
