Tommy: that's a good start for an rp.
Xan Kreigor: "ooc" means "out of context" or "out of character", "ic" means "in context" or "in character", and "rp" means "role-play".
[/ooc]

"Neris, where are ye, girl?" the bartender roars, setting down an empty tankard with a thump. "We got customers goin' thirsty 'ere!"

"Coming, Da!" A face quickly follows the voice out of the kitchen, reddened from the heat of the ovens. Neris steps behind the bar. She is a small thin girl who can be no more than twelve years of age, her hair pulled back in a messy tangle. "What is it?"

The bartender spares her a quick affectionate smile. It is clear to see that they are as related as willow to beech, yet she is known to all the locals as his daughter. "Go'n now, give 'em their drinks."

Neris takes the large tray with an ease that speaks of long experience, slipping through the maze of customers and tables. Truly, there are odd characters in the room this day, strangers and dangerous ones at that, and Neris studies each one with unabashed curiosity.

The night is not calm. Storm winds rage from the ocean, whipping the waves into a foam-tipped frenzy, clouding the moon and stars. The rain falls thick and heavy, pounding into rock and mud with a dull thud that goes unheard beneath the crash of the breakers. There is another sound too, of waterlogged wood snapping as it is tossed time and again against the cliffside.

If any creatures brave the storm at the cliff's edge, and stare long and hard into the murk of water and rock, they might see a storm-caught fisherman's craft, little more than a leaking dinghy, break apart under the pounding. If any creatures stand at the very edge, on crumbling clay slick with rain, and look down, they might catch a glimpse of the craft's occupant, a small dark figure struggling against the current and sheer weight of water, tossed with bruising force against the rocks. And if that creature is patient and very curious, it may watch the figure slowly win its battle, and wrest itself from the water's grip, and climb up the cliff with inhuman strength that is, nevertheless, barely enough to see the figure through to safety. And that creature may see the figure collapse in complete exhaustion, totally covered in a heavy sea-soaked cloak, and lie unmoving as the storm wears itself down upon the cliff-face.

But there are no creatures out on such a night, on that cliff, and so the arrival of Arianne on Siris Island goes unnoticed.

MSW, you're doing fine. You just got carried away, is all. I do too from time to time. If a surface rp popped up on General, I'd join it.

The fungal glow is dim in this cave, barely enough to outline the large outcroppings and mushrooms. If one stares a long time, it is possible to make out the dark figure moving swiftly across the ground. Arianne smiles under her hood. The Overlord is defeated for a time, and with him gone, much of the power behind her rivals. The Clan will be hers. She had done very little in the final battle: the mortals had exceeded her expectations and finished the job themselves. They will bear watching if she encounters them again - an encounter she hopes will not happen. It is with relief that she leaves the mortals to their own affairs. Darkness swallows her as she returns to caves that have never seen the tread of mortal feet.

Fun while it lasted. I think everyone just needs to calm down a little.
MSW: that last ic post was good. You're getting the hang of it.
FB: the point firedrake and others are trying to make is this: ever played Unreal (or Quake or any other 3D shoot'em'ups)? Ever played it in God-mode? In God-mode you are invincible - nothing can hurt you, you have unlimited ammo and your choice of weapons. It's boring. There's no challenge, so what's the point? rping is a bit like that. The other point they're making is that changing characters more than once in a single rp is confusing to the other rpers.
But whatever floats your boat, I guess. Personally I prefer characterization to fighting random monsters.
firedrake: Take a deep breath. Hold it. Let it out slowly. Feel better? If not, go play Unreal or whatever violent game you've got on hand.
premonition: stop posting when you haven't slept in the past 42 hours.

I did initiate the conversation between Celisto and Arianne.
MSW, it's usually better, in a conversation between characters such as you posted, that you allow the other rper to control his/her own character's responses. Small things, such as "Get out of my way" or "Sure, here's some food" are fine, but longer dialogue is best left to the other rper. They know the depth of their character and what the most likely response would be. You must be really certain you understand the character completely before trying to write for them. I've a bit to say regarding that, so I'd appreciate it if you take the time to read what I've written.

For example, Arianne. Here's a few pointers about her:
1. She is not generally so talkative. Information is power, and she will share it only sparingly. Neither is she particularly friendly to mortals such as Celisto and the other heroes.
2. She does not reveal her emotions to such a large degree unless they are overwhelming, or she has a hidden purpose and sees an emotional display as an advantage. Allowing others to see what she feels is giving them information about herself.
3. Shooting a fireball at Arianne is likely to elicit a strong reaction - like one right back in Celisto's face.
4. Arianne is not shocked by a few magical tricks. Remember, she is a magicuser herself, and she is several centuries old. If any of the spells such as teleportation impress her, she will hide it. When I read what you had her respond, I hear only mockery in her words.
5. If you haven't noticed, the only character names Arianne has ever used are those of other vampires, or that of the vampire-slayer Greenswell. She will only ever call the Overlord the Overlord: to her, it is what he is.
6.Also about her speech, she rarely uses contractions such as "can't" or "didn't". She is not human and does not have the same speech patterns of a human.
7. I implied a few times in her dealings with her rivals that my vampires disdain the use of weapons. Arianne is more open-minded than most, but even she will not burden herself with too powerful a weapon. Powerful weapons enforce a dependence upon them, and to the vampires, such a dependence is a weakness.
8. Once again (yes, I'm scrolling down your post) you are giving Arianne a display of emotions she simply will not have.
9. Arianne's history. It is usually considered polite to allow the character's rper to create the background of their own character.
Arianne is undead and high up in the hierarchy of the Clan: that means she is old. She did not get to her position without a great deal of time, patience and treachery. Any ancestors she may have had (and I haven't made up my mind about that) are long dead. Also, if she cared at all about the land of her birth, she would be there right now. There is nothing stopping her from returning.
10. Last thing. Arianne is quite satisfied with her status as a vampire. She did not become a vampire by being nice, or without a great deal of desire for power. Because she is currently allying with the mortals in the town does not mean she wants to be a mortal.

That is Arianne's character, or at least the parts relevant to your post.

Having said all that and picked your post apart, please don't see this as a flame. I am simply trying to help you better understand the rp, in particular my character Arianne. I'm not really fussed, but if you honestly wish to fix up that post, pm me and I'll help. Of course, there's nothing stopping Arianne from taking everything Celisto has so trustingly given her, then turning around and killing Celisto.

Apologies to everyone else for the size of the ooc.
[/big ooc]

The town is under siege more now than in any of the last waves: the streets are flooded, the space above filled with the whistling, buffeting wind of the Flying Ones. In addition, many of the heroes seem to have disappeared. Arianne notes that the town will probably fall to the Overlord. She snarls softly. She should have known better than to trust in mortals. Still, they had lasted longer than Arianne would have thought possible.

Cloaked in ragged cloth and shadow, Arianne makes her way towards the great stench of power that is the Overlord. His most powerful slaves are arrayed around him in an intricate network of magic designed to augment his power. Arianne smiles. The conclusion she had drawn from the information the little mortal had given her was correct. The Overlord has come to depend on contraptions and devices, all of which can be broken.

She watches them carefully, ignoring the undead that stumble blindly around her. Finally, with great care, she picks out her targets, and waits patiently for the opportunity to strike.

The size of the Spiderprise was simply amazing to Mina. Well fed, rested, and with the resident population of people chasing her now nonexistent, Mina once more set out to explore. Before long she was lost in the residential complexes, but she was not at all concerned: there were too many interesting things around, too many exciting things she could do - like jump on the beds and draw pictures on the walls. She knew with the absolute faith of a child that the lady ef would come and get her if something bad happened, or when she was hungry, or tired, or-

Mina gasped. A curious golden light shone through the crack of a closed door, accompanied by strange noises she could not work out. With one hand she eased the door open a sliver.

The room was cavernous. Three creatures were in it, but Mina ignored the cat-thing and the dragon. She had eyes only for the bird that shed the golden light and made everything else seem dim by comparison. It captivated her. Without thinking, she opened the door wide and stepped into the room. Mina reached out to touch the phoenix.

"Ooh, pretty!"

Arianne's stare is barely civil. "We do not war," she says sharply. "We are not mortals." After a moment, though, she relents and answers Rathlan's question. "Succession is never certain. I cannot truly rule the Clan until the power behind my rivals is disabled. But Coras is competent: my rivals will have problems of their own without adding the Overlord's. Some few of Telkan's Family must remain in his service to keep his approval, but the majority are no longer concerned with your town."

The sharp tingle of an almost-familiar magic runs down her spine: Arianne's head jerks up. She stands still for a moment, testing the sensation, before gliding out of the hall without another word. Beneath her cloak, the space inside her clenched fists begins to glow with the beginnings of a firebolt. Overlord's lackey. Hidden in the shadows of an alley, Arianne almost releases her firebolts at the figure making its way to the edge of the town, but stops. The woman tastes of the Overlord's power, but Arianne sees something else in the young girl: fear, a hunted look.

So. Arianne's fangs shine in the dim light of a distant torch. A possession of the Overlord's, gone astray. Vastly amused, she allows the firebolts to dissipate. Her soft voice is carried to Celisto's ear on the barest breath of wind:

"Run away, little mortal. The Overlord does not reward disobedience kindly."

[ooc] Arianne does not know Celisto personally. What Celisto knows is entirely up to you.

Mina obediently ate the meal ef orders for her, not even protesting at the excess vegetables. She'd never seen so much food in her life - the cheese crate she'd arrived in hadn't counted, the smell being too strong and reminding her too much of something left in a recycling station for weeks on end. In truth, it did not take much encouragement on ef's part for Mina to scoff down even the peas she dimly remembered hating. Her shrunken stomach could not handle too much food, and it wasn't long before she settled back in the large chair, an unfamiliar and comforting weight in her belly.

Her heavy eyelids slowly closed of their own accord. Mina curled into a tight ball in her chair, fast asleep, her nose wrinkling as the well-known smell of nicotine and tobacco smoke spread through the clean air.

The Clan is in an uproar. The Old One, Argaveld, had ruled for centuries beyond count. He is destroyed, as is his successor Telkan. Family by Family, the old alliances are discarded in favour of new ones. Within the Families, the power structures fracture as each individual seeks the best route to ascension. They watch their backs and each other with more wariness than ever before, but not a single one is surprised as the death toll becomes greater than anything seen in the past few centuries. The most finely executed treachery is not a shield against itself.

Foremost amongst the contenders is Arianne's Family, in her absence led by the vampire Coras. It surprises many, for Guven's takeover these months past had been considered successful, Arianne herself destroyed. The surprise is shortlived: she survived, and that is all there is to it. She had proven herself powerful, destroying both her closest rivals.

Power is everything.

The Families form their flocks, running with or against Arianne. With her are those who see her rule as their best chance for power, and those who cannot care less about the Overlord and his battle against the mortal town. Led against her by Telkan's successor are those who, for the power the Overlord offers, do his bidding - no matter that it demeans the Clan. And the lesser Families prefer to bide their time, waiting out the storm of succession fights that can easily destroy them.

Arianne is not completely unaware of the state of the Clan - she cannot be and still keep her place as contender - but her thoughts are far away from them. She had attempted to discover the reason behind the Overlord's interest in this town, and failed. It seems that not even those vampires who willingly place themselves at his command know his purpose. Arianne's lip curls. Fools. No better than these mindless beasts. She kicks a severed zombie limb out of her way. The failure rankles, as does all failures. Yet he is the main power behind her strongest rivals, and so she desires to learn that purpose.

Tattered cloak wrapped tightly around her, hiding the telltale features of a vampire, Arianne steps into the town hall.

Perched upon the edge of the sofa, Mina looked almost lost in its vastness. To ef's critical eye, she was far too thin for a child her age. Crumbs rapidly disappeared into the cracks between the cushions as she tried to talk and eat at the same time. "Didn't mean to. Only wanted t'see." Mina's eyes brighten and she gesticulates wildly, showering more crumbs over ef's abused sofa. "We're gonna see teh stars, right? Allays wanted t'see teh stars. Me Da said Mama's 'n angel, 'n angels live in stars."

"Where's your father now, Mina?"

"E went t'see Mama." The child stopped abruptly, and her fear returned as she gazed at ef. "Ya not gonna make me go back, are ya? Ain't got nowhere t'go."

Wiping a smear of cow's blood off her lips with the back of one hand, Arianne looks at Rathlan. The gnome's crossbow is loaded and, though it is not held in an overtly threatening manner, Arianne can see that all he needs is a bare second to use it. The edge has been taken off her craving; nothing would taste nicer than human lifeblood at this moment, but the desire is nothing she cannot handle.

"Thankyou," she says at last. She inclines her head in the direction of the town. "I believe your allies may benefit from your assistance."

Rathlan is a hundred paces away before her voice reaches him again, borne by the merest whisper of a wind and a blunt honesty that owes more to her current weakness than any conscience.

"I care nothing for your village, its survival or its destruction. Were it my choice, you would never have seen any of the Clan. You oppose my rivals - that is enough for me to remain and aid you in your struggle."

Rathlan glances back, but the vampire is no longer on the hill, and a quick search does not reveal her to him.

Mina watched the lady leave. She swallowed, and looked around the corridor indecisively. There were no cyborgs or dragons at the moment - or worse yet, spiders - but she'd seen them. Too many big people. She wasn't used to big people, wasn't used to trusting anyone but herself. But... but, she didn't want to be left alone in a ship of big people. And the lady had promised cookies.

ef was just closing the door - not all the way, mind - when a small thin body careened into her. Mina stared up at the lady with big fearful eyes.

"Didn't mean to," she mumbled. " 'sonly a bit o'paste. No harm, honest! Don't wanna be'n old maid."

Mina looked at the ground, backing into the corner, and hoped no one had found the chocolate. It was only a little bit, and she hadn't meant to get it in the air vents. It was their fault anyhow, for putting the vents in the ground.

[ooc] Apologies for my tardiness. Was out of town for the weekend. [/ooc]

She is careful not to limp as she leads Rathlan around the ranks of undead. A small portion of her remaining power goes into keeping the smell of living flesh from travelling farther than herself; she is not inclined to use much more of her power to keep him safe. Arianne glances down at him; she does not trust the gnome. And, from what she knows of mortals, neither does he trust her.

Arianne dares to hope that things might get better. She has no more strength to fight and little desire to, but she had convinced the cleric to let her live - more fool the cleric. The vampire cannot comprehend it, cannot understand why the cleric had not killed her when she had the chance. She had counted on a favourable answer to her plea, having no other option, and now that her prayer had been answered... Arianne shakes her head and curses herself for the gratitude she now feels. Mortals are fools. Easily manipulated, soft-hearted fools. That is all there is to it.

Yet she is still alive, and free, and has a chance to win back what Guven had cost her. And if she must suffer the presence of a gnome, then it is a small price to pay.

They are past the ruby skeletons soon enough, slogging up a barren hill to where a handful of figures can be seen silhouetted against the glow of a great fire behind. Arianne squints, then smiles grimly. Telkan. Always dramatic, the silly creature. There is not much point in stealth from now on: Arianne glides smoothly up the hill as if she is not fighting merely to stand. The group atop the hill watch them approach complacently, two vampires and a powerful necromancer.

"That's quite far enough." One of the vampires holds up a hand. The other steps back behind the necromancer. "Arianne. I'm surprised to see you."

"Telkan. Since when did you bother with human settlements?"

The vampire's lip curls faintly as he glances at the necromancer by his side. "The Old One was destroyed by one of your humans in that village. Greenswell."

"You expect me to believe you seek vengeance?"

"I swore fealty to Argaveld, as you did, Arianne."

Arianne laughs. The sound ripples around them, and the necromancer scowls impatiently. "Aye. Fealty, but not honour. Do you take me for a fool?"

The necromancer speaks up. "This is a waste of time. Kill it, or I will."

There is a small click behind her. Rathlan, thus far ignored as being insignificant, has quietly loaded his crossbow. Now he raises the weapon and, taking careful aim, fires.

Telkan's hand snaps up faster than the gnome's eye can track, shielding his neck from the missile. He looks at the brooch embedded in his palm with mild surprise. His eyes widen; he screams as the silver and blessing eat into him. Arianne lunges forward, knocking the necromancer away and going for Telkan's throat. Rathlan is by her side, already taking care of the ruby skeletons that turn towards them at the necromancer's call.

The battle is over in less time than it starts: taken by surprise and distracted by pain, Telkan barely raises an arm to defend himself before Arianne is finished with him. She is almost disappointed, though she knows that Telkan was not her match when she was at the peak of her strength. Rising quickly, Arianne turns to face the necromancer - and finds him already dead.

"You declare yourself, then, Coras?"

The other vampire looks at her steadily, his hands relaxed by his sides, dripping with the necromancer's blood. He is cautious, and does not ignore Rathlan totally, though he appears not to notice the crossbow trained on him. "Of course. We are Family, Arianne, even if you choose to keep mortal pets."

"That did not stop Guven."

"And I would have followed him, had he survived. But you have proven the stronger." Coras looks around at the undead assaulting the town, only now his expression showing his disdain. "I do not like this... bluntness. It lacks finesse. The Old One is gone, Telkan ruled the Clan for a time. I will swear fealty to you, Arianne." With one hand he draws a sigil in the air that glows briefly before dissipating.

Arianne smiles, looking happy for the first time since she was forced to leave the hunting grounds. She gestures vaguely at the ruby skeleton ranks. "Dismiss them. Better yet-" her smile becomes wolfish, "send them against Telkan's Family. They will never take me for leader."

"Why do you not do it yourself?"

Rathlan, taking a moment to glance at her, turns back to Coras. His experienced eye has seen what the vampire's does not: the only thing holding her on her feet is sheer will.

"You swore fealty," Arianne says, expression hardening.

Coras hesitates, then bows. A magical wind takes his words away from them, to the army. Within moments the ruby skeletons turn on their heels and depart, leaving the defenders bewildered.

"And the Flying Ones," she orders.

"I have no power of those, you know that."

A small girl watched the gathered crowd from behind a stack of cargo boxes. She looked at the Spiderprise wistfully, somewhat envious of the people lined up for the tours and signing on as crew. The sound of booted feet approaching her hiding place caused Mina to start. She lifted the lid of the nearest cargo box and disappeared inside, holding her breath.

The box tilted sharply and rocked as the crewmembers picked it up. Mina huddled down against the lumpy packages of what smelled like cheese, not daring to move for more than an hour after the jarring motions stopped.

Finally she stirred and peeked out from under the lid. She could see nothing, and climbed out to find herself in a large kitchen storeroom. A quick scout around soon told her, to her delight, that she had found her way onto the Spiderprise. But she was young, and excitement soon gave way to exhaustion. Mina picked an empty cabin at random and fell fast asleep upon the bed.

"The Riven Shield" by Michelle West, Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice", Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales", and several textbooks and journal articles you don't really want to know about.

As for games, I don't really have the time at the moment. When I feel the need to blow stuff up I use Escape Velocity: Nova.

Arianne rolls to her feet and staggers out of the hut. She takes no notice of her surroundings, drawn only by the scent of lifeblood in the air. It is all around, mingled with death and the rotten odour of the zombies.

Dragging a reluctant cow by the tether around its neck, Nicky takes one look at the feral expression on her face and decides that now may not be the best time to approach the hungry vampire. He turns quickly to head in another direction, but not before her gaze falls on him.

She makes no noise, a hunter sighting its prey, as she near flies across the intervening space. Nicky has only enough time to take a step back - and catches his foot in the ribcage of an inanimate skeleton. Overbalancing, he falls on his back just as Arianne lunges for the spot where his neck should be and crashes headfirst into the cow...

The cow is more than enough to satisfy her craving. Her mind clears, and Arianne looks up finally, her gaze stronger and more conscious than it had been, though no less dangerous. She stares at Nicky thoughtfully. At length she decides he is no threat to her and starts walking away without saying a word. If Guven was running with the horde of beasts assaulting this town, then so are others of the Clan. She has no desire to confront them yet, not in her weakened state. Not until she is rested and her power restored.

She does not go far before she halts suddenly, her eyes widening in trapped realization a moment before the priest-cast wards hit her. Arianne screams, the sound astonishingly loud and piercing, and falls writhing to the ground in agony. Smoke rises from her body.

"I have done nothing to you!" Arianne cries out, blindly pleading.

[ooc] FB, I object.
1. You have no way of knowing if my character is a vampire until yours takes a good and close look under her hood - and I'd suggest against getting that close. As it happens she is a vampire, but Scyger really shouldn't know that.
2. My character was 'completely motionless'. That means completely. Scyger therefore cannot have seen her move out of the corner of his eye. For that matter, what is his valid reason for going up there in the first place? Even a "chill running down his back" is better than blind dumb luck. You are omniscient, your character is not. Your character should not know everything you know.
3. This is somewhat of a small technical niggle, but a cross is not automatically a holy symbol. It is, here in the real world, mainly due to christianity. I'm not completely sure because it's been a while since I played the game, but I don't believe Exile ascribes any particular importance to a cross. It's up to you, though. If Scyger wants to put faith in a nonexistant unblessed holy symbol, he's the one who will be unpleasantly surprised.

Watching the one climb into the rafters, his progress hampered by the large scythe, Arianne silently curses her luck. But then, she should have expected something like this, the way her life has turned out these last months. It seems that luck has completely abandoned her side. The one appears to sense something; he readies his weapons, all the while peering through the darkness in her general direction.

Arianne scowls. Beneath the voluminous folds of her ragged cloak her hands twist in preparation to cast. She hesitates. She is already taking a risk here, with a cleric and seasoned adventurers beneath. With a mental shrug she plunges the rafters into deeper blackness, effectively shielding herself from all sight. She just hopes none of the ones gathered below are sensitive to her subtle magic.

Arianne hisses in pain and draws back from the edge of the building. A cleric! But she is stronger than the mindless beasts below - and besides, the spell is not aimed at her. It takes very little effort to avoid the one leaping from rooftop to rooftop, and somewhat more to dodge the blade that comes spinning up out of the strange contraption.

Mortals. So careless. She sneers with the contempt of a born hunter. Look at them! Running about, hacking everything in sight. No precision at all.

The death of the cursed necromancer draws her attention; she bares her fangs in satisfaction. Ah... food. Waiting until the one with the wave blade leaves, Arianne jumps down into the tight alley between apartment building and factory that the necromancer had fled to.

The villagers and heroes - Arianne's lips twist again at the concept - gather in the town hall. Cautious of what they will decide and desiring that her sanctuary in this village remain untouched, Arianne slips in past the guards. Unseen, she lurks high above their heads, in the deep shadows of the rafters. She is completely motionless as she waits for the meeting to begin.

[ooc] May I join this? I know I'm a little late, but better late than not reading all the posts. Well, here's my character - a little different, but interesting, I hope. Accept her or not as you please. [/ooc]

The sounds of battle drift up over crumbling earthen walls. Low burbling moans, shouts, the clash of weapons. The taste of power taints the air.

A figure crouches on the corner of the building's flat roof. It is absolutely motionless as it watches the progress of the battle. The eery glow that passes as light in the underworld shines beneath the large tattered hood, illuminating the delicate features of a girl. Her skin is impossibly colourless, far paler than even an Exile-born's. Her eyes are pools of shadow that track the mutilation and fall of zombies with an avid gleam.

Stupid beasts.

Pale, rose-tinged lips part to reveal the tips of two fangs. Arianne growls softly. The abandoned apartment had been her refuge for a week now, careful as she had been not to disturb the villagers or give them any hint of her presence. But she will hardly remain undiscovered with so many of the lesser undead wandering about. They have ruined everything.

In spite, she curses the Necromancer. It is not the most powerful of curses, though the effects will be noticed, but it is all that she can manage. It does little to calm her ire.
