I write a little bit of fanfiction and do a bit of RPing when I have the time. I play violin in an amateur orchestra consisting mainly of retired people and the occasional student. I also have a flute, though I haven't touched it in something like six months.

Other than that, not really. I'm currently fiddling around with a bunch of wires and ICs, trying to get them all to fit into as small a space as possible. If you can call that art.

Chopin's Preludes, performed by Vladimir Ashkenazy. A very good pianist, aside from being my favourite conductor.

Neris stands still in the bartender's arms. She stares down at her feet.

"I thought he was nice," she says softly. "I thought Schostas was a friend."

The bartender winces. "Ai, this is war, me girl. Things are done in war that no one likes."

Neris raises her tear-stained face to look up at him. "When will it be over, Da?"

"This very afternoon, gods willing." The bartender smiles comfortingly and sets a large hand on her shoulder. "Now, me girl, there's customers t' be served, and food t' be prepared. Go help the kitchen, will ye?"

Neris nods and walks away slowly. She murmurs, "They had such pretty wings..." Her gaze is faraway and sad.

"Well?"

Morgan looked up. Her grey eyes were piercing in their intensity, but the slight smile that lined her lips was relaxed. "We've gained another three merchant-class ships and one clipper. The captains signed the contract two days past. All of them are based along the eastern coast. Most deliveries are on schedule, though we've lost a few caravans to bandits in the Central Pass. The growers in the north-east are contesting the increased rates, but we expected that. They haven't kicked up too much of a fuss."

Regarding the half-eaten meal in front of her, Vida took a thoughtful sip of wine. The goblet was real crystal, plain but delicate. The Sailor's Association was hers, from the time it had been composed of nothing but an idea and a few courier ships operating out of the delta, to the vast network it was in the present day. It had been hard, bloody work. Vida savoured the sweet spiced liquid that could not entirely mask the memory of wormy hardtack and swampwater she had survived on many times in the past. "What's the bad news?"

The lowlevel mage shifted in her seat. "The Solarans have tightened their blockade. Our shipment to Kylen's supporters in the Jsoulza Basin didn't get through. The Solarans have commandeered the Falcon."

Vida cursed, the foul stream of words at odds with the fine clothes she wore. "And after they got their own, I see. The gutless swine. We'll have to teach them a lesson."

"We can't embargo them," Morgan ventured. "That will cut our profits by a fifth at least."

"No. But you see what this means, don't you? The Kylens will accuse us of deliberately losing their supplies and giving them to the Solarans. The Ironclads have already started inspecting every ship that comes to their ports. They'll get more suspicious, and the Solarans will think they can take what's ours with impunity. No, I've got something else in mind." Vida's face was set with purpose. "How many pirates do we have in the delta?"

"Two, maybe three."

"Send them a message. I want the Falcon back. Don't tackle the blockade head-on, and don't attack any warship unless it attacks them first. The Falcon's in port at the moment, no doubt, but they'll put her out soon enough. I trust my captains will know when to strike."

Vida's smile was wolfish and showed some hint of pirating history that contrasted oddly with her appearance of a rich merchant chief. Morgan nodded, impassive as always.

Neris happily meanders through the crowd, nibbling on a large stick of bread a grizzled old Lancian sergeant had given her. The minstrels had caught her attention for a long time, and she had spent many minutes caught up in their songs. Now, though, she is beginning to tire, for even the excitement of the fair and the approaching duel cannot stave off the effects of staying up for most of the preceding night. There are no other children around - no parent is so foolish as to bring a child to a fair that could explode any moment from the tension beneath the merry surface - and Neris is feeling lost in a crowd of bigger people.

The sound of cheering reaches her ears. Curious, she approaches a thick knot of people all looking at something and tries to peer around them. But they are too tall and many, and she can't see anything. Neris slips through the crowd with practice born in the tavern, weaving her way into the centre as the cheers reach fever pitch.

At last she breaks through to the edge, and she can see. Neris gasps. Without thinking, she starts running towards the hawkmen and the bound dragon. She doesn't know what to do, only knowing that she has to stop one beautiful creature from destroying another...

There is beauty in subtlety and delicacy of sound. I suppose there is in noise, too. *shrug* It's not for everyone. That lady, for instance, had been asleep at the time.

I've just listened to Handel's Messiah in its entirety. I find it interesting that %60 of the audience knew the appropriate moment to stand up (beginning of the Hallelujah chorus). The rest stood up from peer pressure.

Neris rushes through her morning chores with impatience born of excitement. Once they are done, she slips out of the inn, to wander amongst the bright tents and breathe in the festival air. The large presence of soldiers and the tension between the factions do not bother her - she has eyes and ears only for the jesters and the occasional bard.

Berlioz, Benvenuto Cellini, Act 1 Scene 13.

Heh. Everyone's there to listen to the music, not to hear others talk. There was one concert I went to, where they were playing something by Peter Sculthorpe (contemporary Aussie composer, one of the better ones) that was very atmospheric. There is a very very quiet bit, where the violin bows just whisper over the strings, the sound shimmers in the air with crystalline delicacy, the slightest breath can be heard... and some lady drops her handbag! You have no idea how loud that bang was - it echoed throughout the entire concert hall. Woke everyone up :D .

No music evokes so much feeling in me as Sibelius' symphonies.

1. The Well, by Elizabeth Jolley. I mentioned in that other book topic about the 'literary' Aussie outback novels written by women: this is a prime example.

2. Pachabel's Canon. Being stuck in a store with it playing on repeat for several hours through tinny speakers will make me hate any music.

3. There's a myriad of them. I'll just have to say Plan 9 from Outer Space just because it's classically bad.

[ooc] MC: 1. Neris is roughly 13, give or take.
2. Is she good-looking? I don't know. All I can tell you about her looks is that she is slender, quick, and wears what one might expect a commoner in a fantasy feudal society to wear. She is also currently sporting quite a few bruises, scratches, and bandages. She may indeed have a dirty face. :) As for a further physical description: does it really matter? I have my own mental image of her that is probably quite different from yours, but I don't think it necessary to impose my picture on you. You will imagine her looking the way that best fits her character to you, just as my mental image fits what her character means to me.
[/ooc]

The last small crossbow bolt slivers down into the yard, spearing another snake by its tail. Biting her lip, Neris looks down at her work critically. She has missed more than she hit, but she is proud of the ones she did manage to get, and certain that Shadow Wolf will be too. She is also quite proud that she hadn't hit any of the people, either.

There are still lots of snakes: Neris pulls her shortsword out of the sheath strapped around her waist, fumbling a few times, and runs out of the room.

"Woah!"

Kris catches her arm above the wrist and spins out of the way of the blade haphazardly clattering down the stairs. Only his soldier reflexes prevent him from being stabbed - or at least from getting a painful scratch.

"What are you doing?" he asks sternly, picking up the shortsword with his free hand.

Neris looks up at him urgently. "Got t' kill the snakes," she says, tugging him closer to the door by dint of sheer determination. "Their fightin' me friends!"

Looking from the child to the shortsword, the former Captain shakes his head. "I'm not letting you out there."

"I got to!" Neris cries out, and tugs on his arm again. "I got t' help me friends."

"No, listen." Kris tightens his grip on her arm; he isn't about to let a child anywhere near the snakes. But he knows that she will not accept just watching and doing nothing. "Listen. I'll go and look after your friends. You help Rasil with the fire." He directs her gaze to the walls.

Neris gasps in horror at the sight of the flames consuming the walls of her home. Indecision holds her still for a moment; she looks from the fire to the snakes and back again. "Ye promise ye'll look after them?"

A small smile flickering around his lips, Kris nods gravely. "I promise."

He gives her shortsword back to her, and stands watching as she runs for the buckets and the water. Then he turns and strides towards the swarm of snakes surrounding the Naga, pulling out his own, much larger, sword.

In the wake of Jesitonia's death and the subsequent instability of the temple, the Wanderer is forgotten. Galen watches the adventurers flee the shine. He does not move; from the emptiness in his eyes, one might think that he is mindless. It is very nearly true: a storm of fury and exultation rages inside him, a hunger and freedom that threatens to drown Galen. The death of the Necromancer has destroyed the final tenuous constraints imposed on the maane by its summoning.

blood hunger blood give me

No.

It is all he can do to remain still. Galen is adamant; with the remnants of his battered spirit he holds on, determined not to let the maane gain control and reach the world above. He will not be responsible for the deaths that will follow if the maane is released. He will not.

Oh, but there is a joy in letting go; a freedom in surrendering to hunger. A seduction in the storm, for it knows no care nor fear. It offers power, yes; power to set right all the wrongs done him in the long exile of the Wanderers, power to take what he craves. The wild storm that is the maane calls to him, pulls him, consumes him. Galen wants it. With a desire sharp and painful, he wants to let himself go. To relinquish all memory and pain, to renounce all ties. The compulsion to leave the shrine that is now empty in more ways than one and take to the world is overwhelming. He is not strong enough to fight the wild storm; his will to do so is draining rapidly away.

But the lives that the maane hungers for are those of Wanderers, blood of his blood. And Galen will send his own spirit to the endless Void before he will ever become Kinslayer.

And so he stands, and does not move, and watches the flight of the adventurers beyond the stones that begin raining down around him.

Blame it on the movies. If it hadn't been for them, I could still enjoy my favourite lotr characters without having to share them with a million fangirls who haven't the faintest idea about Tolkien Elves except that they look like Orlando Bloom.

David Eddings is childrens' fantasy, just a (small) step up from Disney fairy tales. They all have cliches. Where he went wrong was using the same formula for every world he created, then publishing that formula in the Riven Codex.

My favourite childrens' book authors are Brian Caswell and John Marsden. Both Australian, so I doubt most of you have ever read their books, but both authors whom I would still read now and probably again in ten years.

Smoking does make you feel better, because some of the ingredients decrease anxiety. Unfortunately, it's also addictive and carcinogenic. And, IMO, one of the worser smells to hit my nose when I step outside.

1. Science fiction and fantasy, for the most part. There are a few authors who I'd buy on sight: Michelle West, Timothy Zahn, Patricia McKillip.

2. Depends entirely on each individual classic. I've read a few and have more lined up on my 'to read' list. Some I like, some I don't. A word of advice: don't read any Australian 'prize-winning literary' book written by a woman about the outback. They're more Freudian than Freud.
