Fantasia (the one that came out around 1950) Pinocchio (Fagin and his sidekick reminded me of kids from my neighborhood) Snow White (the Evil Queen reminded me of my mom in real life) At one time Walt Kelly, who created the comic character Pogo, was an illustrator for Disney. He used to draw the Donald Duck comics in the 40's, and they had a lot of rich detail and characters in the background, like Pogo did later on. After he left Disney the comics looked childish and empty. -------------------- "I can't give you brains," said the Wizard of Oz to the Scarecrow, "but I can give you a diploma." - L. I haven't seen Sword in the Stone (although I probably saw bits and pieces of it floating about), but Jungle Book is a boring film. I liked most disney films when I was 5. That doesn't mean I could tolerate them now. -------------------- We're all amazed but not amused By all the things that you said you'd do. I like the old Fantasia as well. The rest of the movies tend to be boring or inferior copies of books. Or both. —Alorael, who has been amused by the heavy alterations from book to movie. Aladdin, as an example, shares very little with the Arabian Nights Aladdin beyond poverty and a magical lamp. Where's the genie in a ring, hm? I'm surprised a topic like this has stayed on track as long as it had. I would have at least thought someone would have at least started an argument over the alleged sexual references hidden in so many movies/cartoons. As for classic disney... eh, there are no real movies that are original that stand out in my mind. As Alorael stated, most of what disney has done was based off or ripped from other books or tales and ripped off badly (The Little Mermaid is probably the worst in my opinion). Even the Lion King was a take on an old African tale. Oh well, originality isn't everything... But if I had to say a favorite, which I do as that is the main topic, I would have to go for Fantasia as well. ---Your mage's apprentice/maniac, Necris Omega -------------------- Sanity is a relative concept. Hm... Who Framed Roger Rabbit comes to mind. And I really liked the Black Cauldron (even if it isn't close to the books). For the 'less ancient' classics I'd have to nominate the Little Mermaid for its excellent music. I do believe that Robin Hood is a definate classic. I mean, who can argue with the old school weapons (bows and arrows, and swords). Although, I like the Lion King just because of the music (mainly Hakuna Matata). And because Scar is eaten alive by the hyienas (or however you spell it ). -------------------- ~~Here comes the Thnikka Man~~ Posts: 14 | Registered: Monday, February 23 2004 08:00 |

The anthropomorphic Disney version of "Robin Hood" was absolutely delightful. And it certainly didn't hurt that, at the time that I watched it, foxes were by far my favorite animal. -------------------- "Let a man find himself, in distinction from others, on top of two wheels with a chain- at least in a poor country like Russia- and his vanity begins to swell out like his tires. Yes, Robin Hood was another good one. I must admit that I'd forgotten about it! I'll have to see it again sometime. For one thing, the music was better than what was done for most cartoons of the period. And the humor was great — especialy the scene where they were trying to extricate some object from the snake's grasp while he was sleeping. -------------------- A.E. van Vogt (1912-2000) The World's Most Influential Science Fiction Writer Author of such classics as Slan (1940), The World of Null-A (1945), The Voyage of the Space Beagle (1950), and The Weapon Shops of Isher (1951) Visit my website about him at www.home.earthlink.net/~icshi/ Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |

SOME MANNER OF STEAMBOAT WILLIE Is there one where Walt Disney is brutally disemboweled for being pond scum? Actually, my favorite Disney film would have to be Mulan. It finally cemented in my mind just how formulaic Disney animations have become. Spunky main character who wants to act beyond her "place", sidekicks (often a small, eccentric one and a big, stupid one), hunky males with nonthreatening tenors, etc. Disney is as American as Ford and McDonald's. And none of what you said erases the fact that both of them are little-girl movies, and as such, are horrifically bad.
