If you wander around among the poppies without getting put to sleep you can find a moderately helpful item. —Alorael, who likes the gremlins a lot more in E3 than in A3. Riddles are easy when you get to pick from a list of answers. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Avernum: Movement is fine if you have a numeric keypad. Laptops and compulsive arrow users are definitely in trouble. I can't manage Avernum or Nethergate without a full keyboard. There are also a surprising number of posts asking for help that turn out to come from players who didn't realize that they could move diagonally. Graphics: I agree. Avernum's terrain is pretty, but the items are a mixed bag. It's really the creatures that get me, though. Nephils look like sliths, all humans look the same, and so on. When I picture things from Exile/Avernum, I picture them with the prettier E3/BoE graphics. —Alorael, who has never had any lockup problems playing all the games in Mac OS 9. Counterexample by long word doesn't disprove the research. It's seems plausible to me that common words that we see all the time get "aliased" by our brains. When we see something similar, we pull out the right word. Don't tell me you've never read something fast and realized that you accidentally turned a word into a similar but nonsensical word. Longer words don't get automatically processed. We actually read them out, so we don't have any facility with reassembling them from parts. It's not that our brains are good at decoding jumbled messes, it's just that are brains are good at ignoring the specifics of the middle when a quick glance shows that the right innards are present. —Alorael, who thinks the Spanish would probably work better if verbs were somehow written so that only the root were jumbled and the conjugated end and suffixes were not. That can easily be most of the verb, though, so maybe only suffixes need to remain in place. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Jeff releases everything for Mac first because he writes them on a Mac. Then he releases it and works on the port. They usually take a month or two, but the exact time is hard to determine because the PC beta testers can find weird and unsquishable bugs. —Alorael, who has heard that Macs are very difficult to come by in Germany. Maybe he just consorts with too many heathen PC users over there, though. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The projected number of purchasers versus the amount of work required to port Avernum doesn't make the effort time well spent. There are more people with desktops and laptops than various handheld computers. Out of those, how many would buy Avernum? And out of those, how many would buy Avernum if they could get it for a "real" computer instead? Jeff would make more money by creating Geneforge 3 (or 4), or Avernum 4, or whatever else he thinks of for full-sized computers, and Jeff does all his designing with money in mind. —Alorael, who would guess that the only audience likely to buy Avernum for PDA would already have Avernum for computer and would be equally likely to buy a new game for computer. Thus, the new game is a better investment of work. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Monty Python has weighed in on the subject of what could be called the worst joke in the world if mass killings are your idea of bad. —Alorael, who also considers bad very much in the eye of the beholder in matters of humor. There will always be a place in his heart for really, really bad jokes and especially the most repulsive puns ever written or spoken. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Custom avatars hardly take any space or bandwidth. Both come from the host, not Spiderweb. The problem was page loading times for dialup users who had to wait for the atrociously large avatars of certain members. Those with dysfunctional caches were also at a disadvantage. —Alorael, who misses avatars. He doesn't miss the loading times, which at their worst were even a problem for faster connections. Part of that was probably from the fact that his computer is always one step ahead of toasterdom, but part of it was a genuine problem. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

And here you know the real reason why there's a posting spree. Near the end of the cold season, tempers are frayed and flames become more frequent. Titillation aside, a nude person gets a great deal of attention just like someone wearing purple and green velvet robes and carrying a monkey would get attention. Things that stand out from the ordinary get noticed. If everyone were nude all the time it wouldn't be so much of a stare magnet, but then imagine how someone with a shirt and pants on would stand out! —Alorael, who disagrees that humans are the most complex species (physically, at least). Do you think you could handle walking with more than two legs? How about more than six? Plus humans don't have shiny carapaces, obvious segmentation, or bulbous compound eyes. All that may be an acquired taste, though... Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I view E1 as the lengthy introduction to the world. Only the very end has anything to do with plot, and the plot carries over into E2. I like E1, but E2 is the one that actually has things happening. —Alorael, who doesn't think he would have enjoyed E2 nearly as much if he weren't already familiar with Exile. Seeing Cotra in ruins is much worse when you remember shopping there fresh out of Fort Exile. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Saying that the human body is beautiful and saying it can't be pornographic are two different things. That infamous goatse is quite clearly the latter, and I defy you to twist (or untwist) it into the former. —Alorael, who will be forced to insist that the human body can be sexual. There are five thousands registered members on these forums, and I very much doubt that all of them were the result of artificial insemination, spontaneous generation, storks, and immaculate conception. I've been called "she" a few times. I think it's the -ael that does it when pronounced "iel." The general assumption, of which I too am guilty, is that people on the internet who have no obvious gender are male until proven otherwise. It works pretty well by the numbers, but it's a bit obnoxious. —Alorael, whose signatures help keep the number of people who misjudge his gender to a minimum. Posting on forums other than Spiderweb on which Drakey also participates has a statistically significant positive correlation with one's chances of obtaining a custom title. —Alorael, who can also add that being an awful human being gets you custom titles.
