On the other side of the picture, the brain drain means that there is a steady stream of foreign-born and often highly qualified professionals seeking far from menial jobs. I know there's already a great deal of position jockeying in the academic world. Would opening that up to anyone and everyone make it even worse? —Alorael, who knows too little about immigration to have an opinion beyond agreeing that the current situation creates only more work, more abuses, and more expenses. Some kind of reform makes sense, but he'll leave the specifics to the people who understand the current situation. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

I very much hope that that was an attempt at humor. —Alorael, who is Jewish and who, more or less according to the tenets of his religion, does not believe in Hell. The afterlife can be left to God and everyone will find out what it's like eventually. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

You can also find out the identity of the problem by reading a book in a library in the Tower of Magi. That will also get you the right dialogue option with Kelner, who is by the pool in the southern part of the hall in the tower. —Alorael, who also believes that Kelner only gives you directions to a hidden location outdoors near the Tower of Magi that gives you the password. I'd say a Blades of Geneforge will come sometime, but whether it's preceded by another installment in a series really depends on how well BoA sells, how well GF3 sells, and how well A4 sells. What I'd like to see is a new game. Avernum 5 (or even A4) could fit the bill, but I won't hold my breath. A4 will probably spark a new trilogy (A5 and A6) and maybe then something really new will come along. —Alorael, who doesn't begrudge Jeff his money and even expects to enjoy A4. It's just a shame Nethergate didn't sell better and prompt more games of similar style. Yet another generic RPG gets old. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Actually, I think the portal code for Formello is in Formello. Go outside the walls to the south but don't leave the city. Walk east and you'll come across an obelisk with the code on it. —Alorael, who also isn't positive that that's the right code. On the other hand, he's fairly sure that the code in the Barrier Tower is for something more important. Erika's Tower, maybe? Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The downside to the spell is that summoned minions' kills don't give you experience. Heavy simulacrum dependence is eventually crippling. —Alorael, who admits that it's not much of a balancing factor. Simulacrum makes the game less fun, though, so he doesn't use it. Four out of five MMORPGs fail. Spiderweb is a one man company with limited ability to compete with the likes of WoW and EQ and even more limited ability to recover from losing vast amounts of time and money. —Alorael, who doesn't see much MMORPG potential in any of Jeff's games anyway. What makes you think Spiderweb would make such a wonderful one? Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

It doesn't seem right to me that the mother has veto power over whether the couple, whether or not they are a couple, has a child. On the other hand, an easy out on child support is a very bad solution. Some kind of forced abortion is better, except of course for the moral outcry that would ensue. And, of course, the father shouldn't get veto power either. —Alorael, who doesn't have any good solution as long as the word abortion causes blood pressures to skyrocket world-wide. 30 seconds in the water is long enough to attract piranhas. The cut is gone because the finger is too. And maybe the hand. [Edit: The answer to Ben's is nothing.] —Alorael, who has nothing good for ZT's new ones. Youth is an extreme stretch for the first and he can't think of anything better than the aforementioned idea for the second. Hero of Old, Beast Ceremony, and all the little buffs you start out with. I spend far more time buffing and healing than casting the damaging spells. —Alorael, who also likes those crystal wands. If Exile's engine were used, the result would by definition not be roguelike. No Exile or Avernum engine is quite ready for the change of emphasis without heavy alteration, and in the end there isn't a great market for the dungeon crawl type of game that isn't covered for free by Rogue, Angband (and ToME and other *band variants), and the like on one end and Diablo on the other. —Alorael, who doesn't see much of a point in discussion anyway. Unless Jeff sees definite money in it, which is dubious, he won't make it, and he'll never, ever let anyone else touch his code. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

No biologist would deny that a fetus is alive because it is obviously alive, though not obviously any more alive than the aforementioned thyroid. Some will deny that it is an independent organism and many will deny that it can be termed a human being. There isn't really a good way to justify this scientifically, because you can choose varying methods of measuring "alive," "independent," and "human" and pick the one that suits your beliefs. Biologists make moral judgements too, and they aren't necessarily any more informed than yours. I'd call a fetus a parasite, actually, and nobody objects to killing most parasites... (No, this is not a serious argument, but this is where a biological standpoint could lead.) [Edit: Clarity added.] —Alorael, who doesn't consider failure to use a condom a good excuse to refuse abortion. Because someone made a mistake, someone (and not necessarily the same someone) deserves to suffer for nine months? Then there's adoption, except there aren't enough adopters for all the children who need homes and the system to take care of such unwanted children is a nightmare. Milla has it right. And Kel, you can keep your bizarre title to yourself, thank you very much. I managed not to get a title by virtue of distinguishing myself by sheer number of posts. Such is life. —Alorael, who thinks Icshi is understating his worth. He got a custom title due in no small part to being one of the very few to actually register and ostensibly enjoy GC. If you have any metal bars, check them. Unidentified ones just may be uranium, which diseases your entire party. Gauntlets may be Pyrrhic Gauntlets, which also cause disease. Those are the two big mysterious sources of contagion in A1 and A2. —Alorael, who doesn't think the gauntlets are cursed and who knows the uranium isn't.
