I think there may be a causal link. Stareye wouldn't post this. [Edit: You know, everyone is dislikeable, and most prominent Spidwebbers are disliked. What exactly are the results going to show?] —Alorael, who also finds this kind of poll rather irritating. He will vote no out of the goodness of his heart, but that's his goodness quota for the foreseeable future. Jeff is known and infamous for ignoring players' wishes when it comes to Blades, BoE especially. I'm not sure how much of a problem it is when the beta testers give their input on the non-Blades games, but Jeff still has a bad reputation for it. He may make fun games by shooting blindly when designing features, but that doesn't mean he can't do better. —Alorael, who would still rather see something innovative rather than window dressing on the old system. Something as good as the better parts of the Exile to Nethergate (to Avernum) engine switch would be very nice. (Something like the switch to the Geneforge engine would not be.) That's why I said GC is non-lethal punishment. I think 10 minutes of Homeland could cause serious harm, 20 minutes might result in permanent damage, and half an hour would invariably be lethal to one who has not gradually built up resistance. —Alorael, who isn't sure why it's so much fun to bash GC. It is fun, though, so everyone joins in. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

quote:The Catholic Church (before it was the Catholic Church) disagreed, and it maintained that disagreement through the Reformation. I'm not on top of modern Catholic theology, but there's still a strong implication that whether or not you can be saved by works remains a question. I'd like to see the scripture behind the arguments. I tried to find some for myself online and what I found wasn't convincing. quote:And it continues. I get a sense that humans are less than nothing compared to God, but the entire passage is a lament mostly unrelated to the argument. It's also not about damnation or salvation, as the Old Testament tends not to address that issue so strongly. quote:This is the famous passage, but it's not clear. Again, it strikes me as a warning against pride because great accomplishments do not lead to salvation. Whether good works are "works" is, in my skeptical mind, debatable. The following verses are concerned with changes in practices, notably waiving the requirement of circumcision. And then, to muddy everything further: quote:The first of those is the first clear declaration that good works aren't necessary. It isn't specifically spelled out that faith saves rather than ritual, but at least the works are out. James then disagrees strongly: it may not be works alone that save, but they're a necessary component. And two more: quote:Cited as signs that God rejects those who are not saved by faith. I don't really like judging this without translating the Hebrew, but doesn't "wicked" imply deeds rather than faith? Similarly, turning away from law is a comment on behavior, not thought. Proverbs is from the Old Testament, and thought-crime wasn't fashionable back then. —Alorael, who will stop now and wait for someone to either argue or find better scripture denying the value of works and affirming salvation through faith. Actually, that's really not the stereotype at all among most non-Christians. Christians tend to be known by their worst and loudest element, or, appropriately enough, as enemies of the true faith. Yes, the Bible has influenced morality for thousands of years (and for thousands of years before Christianity came into being), but it's far from the only or first influence. Pre-Christian and non-Christian cultures have tended to be as law-abiding and functional as Christian ones, and they were surprisingly free of horrors and rampant evil. Almost all cultures have had some form of spirituality to inform moral decisions, but it certainly doesn't have to be based on the Bible. —Alorael, who would like to know how it is in any way a good thing to introduce anyone to Christianity if ignorance means Jesus gets to speak for himself. Doing missionary work simply means a less persuasive person tries to do the converting and puts the very souls he wants to save at greater risk. If religion were medicine, the Hippocratic Oath would forbid missionaries. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

The end of Nethergate really makes a sequel impossible, but more games in the same style would be quite possible. There have been topics about it before suggesting how such a game could be set in early colonial America, in Egypt, in medieval Europe, and so on. —Alorael, who doesn't see how more Celt and Roman games could build on Nethergate. A prequel would be awkward since the end couldn't be quite as earth-shattering, a simultaneous plot wouldn't make sense, and as he already noted, a sequel is impossible. Respect is earned, not given. I respect the office of the presidency. I have no respect at all for the man who currently holds the office and who seems determined to subvert even the Constitution in his quest for whatever he's after. —Alorael, who doesn't think it's right to condemn a country and a former country because of their extremists. On the other hand, they are both too filled with extremist leadership to come to any reasonable compromise: as long as there is a state of Israel there will be suicide bombers, and as long as there are suicide bombers Israelis will feel unwilling to make any concessions. The leadership is probably more of a problem than the average citizen now. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Part of Spidweb games' appeal is that you can turn your characters into anything as they level up. Getting stuck in a race-class track from character creation would make that boring. Races could have a few minor abilities added like some traits do more than just alter numbers, but anything more restrictive would make races less fun to me, not more. —Alorael, who also would rather see more reason to decide whether or not to include various races in a party. If nephilim are attacked on sight in a large area but the nephilim will only welcome you if you have one in your party, you have a real decision to work with instead of number manipulation. "Convert or you will burn in hell!" takes a definite tone. "Convert and you will go to Heaven!" takes a very different one. Common courtesy, if nothing else, would make the latter a better choice, and I believe common advertising practice agrees. "It's for your own good" is a good excuse to give to people under the age of six. I'd like a better reason to convert than circular arguments and prophecies and the carrot-and-stick routine. (Note how many prophecies are in the Old and New Testaments, how many are accurate, and how many require a great deal of stretching to be termed so. Cryptic restrospective prophecy isn't meaningful.) Let's say I become Christian. Are the Catholics right? Maybe the Episcopalians? The Society of Friends, the Lutherans, or the "whack-job" cults that crop up regularly? I've still never seen a good reason for the strange editing of the Old Testament largely accepted by Christian sects. No, this argument can't get anywhere. Religious arguments never do, probably because you can't argue with faith or lack thereof. —Alorael, who will conclude by agreeing with Alec. Religion does not make you a good person and good people are not always religious. A little bit more recognition of that would do far more for the help of others that Christ advocated. How often did Jesus threaten hellfire and how often did he perform miracles? Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

And statistics indicate that whichever religion you follow is probably wrong anyway. Is it really worth it to go through all the ceremonial rigamarole when it's all probably a waste of time? Fortunately, many deities/powers/systems won't damn you for all eternity just because you picked the wrong type of worship. —Alorael, who will not accept Jesus into his heart until he sees a good, mathematically sound reason for him to do so. I disagree about the graphics. Since Jeff promises a new engine, I'd like to see new graphics that go with it that aren't as ugly as Avernum's current set. Since it's a new engine, I don't have any specific mechanical changes in mind. Having the engine avoid real-time bits like Geneforge would be a plus. —Alorael, who would also like a decent plot and more interesting and tactically challenging combat. And he would like the game to be fun instead of boring. Are there any more generalization to throw around? Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |
