E3 - Gremlin's riddle

I'm trying to save a dryad's glade from an ogre, but I need the help of the First Gremlin, in Gremlin Grove, who will only help me if I answer his riddle: "I have a thousand little knives, my hands are red and white. You can give them to your maid, to make things turn out right." I'm terrible at riddles, so I have no idea what the answer could be. Please help!

I just walked passed the gremlins and forgot about the riddles, it was probably a little harder, but worth it.

I can't get past Poppy Glade - it keeps returning me to the grove entrance. How did you get past it?

I believe the answer to the riddle is "rose" but you don't need it to save the glade.

If you wander around among the poppies without getting put to sleep you can find a moderately helpful item.

—Alorael, who likes the gremlins a lot more in E3 than in A3. Riddles are easy when you get to pick from a list of answers.
