Massachusetts still has an old puritan law on the books that makes sodomy illegal. It's currently being challenged in court (there wasn't an actual conviction...it's a long story).
There are statutes that make anti-gay actions a hate crime, but at the same time, certain lawmakers are trying to pass a law defining marriage as only the union between a man and a woman.
Just when you think you're someplace liberal...

If I remember this right, the blood transfusion thing was actually about a Christian Scientist, which are a little more hardcore about some of their views.
A friend of mine is a Witness, and he explained to me that his father needed some transfusions for an upcoming surgery. He had blood withdrawn before the surgery, and then had it re-injected during the procedure. So it's not about the transfusion itself, but about whose blood runs in your veins.

Also, the adult Witnesses that come around here bother me a lot less than those uniform-wearing buzz-cut sporting mormon boys. I sometimes question their free will in what they're doing.

Racism in the South isn't that different than anywhere else, it's just more overt and crude. Let's remember that state-sponsored discrimination only ended forty years ago.
These things take time, and will never entirely go away.
And Scorp, if memory serves, you work at a Government Ministry, which has equal opportunity employment laws and racial quotas to meet. Wait till you get to the private sector; an entirely different game with entirely different rules.

Let's remember, though, that California has two giant anomalies, Silicon Valley and Hollywood. The first one has sickening amounts of venture capital flowing through it, while the second one...well, we all know about hollywood and how someone like Jim Carrey can make $20 million for three months' worth of work.

Funny thing, though, when compared side-by-side, Europeans are generally more productive (judged by hourly output). I think it's a crying shame that there isn't more vacation time in the US. Most large companies will give you two weeks, if you're lucky. My father, working in Germany, had six weeks paid vacation each year, and ten personal days for emergencies. If you treat your employees nicely, the might be more inclined to do better work for you.
As for the tax cut: wasn't it Clinton's crowning achievement that he ran a balanced budget for what, five or so years? Two years of Bush and the deficit is through the roof. Is government spending not considered money in the loop? They are, after all, the largest employer in the nation.

Bah, I only like communism and maoism for the art they produced. Quite styley. I think Mao was quite wrongheaded about a lot of things, and modern-day maoists are insufferable.

Scorp, an hour's drive away from Atlanta isn't just country, it's COUNTRY. Albany is near the Florida border, another state renowned for its progressive social standards.
Racism is nothing new. You Canadians have it, Europeans have (those damn asylum seekers/immigrants/etc.), every freaking continent has it. Group mentality. Point at those different than you, treat them different, etc., to make yourself feel better.
BUT! Look at the response here. People know about it, talk about it, etc, realize it's a problem. So all is not lost yet. When you take your rightful place in your white corporate haven of choice after you graduate, you can pressure management to be more evenhanded.

Yeah, especially in a gun-totin' country like the US.
General question here: Just how exactly does a huge tax cut create more jobs, as Bush so happily proclaims? I just foresee more federal workers laid off, being a further burden on the gov't. The rich will get to be a little richer, the poor will most likely either blow it or use it to pay down some debt. Either way, I fail to see the intelligence of a tax cut when state governments can't make ends meet and are doing all sorts of irresponsible stuff like combining schools, shutting down rape crisis centers, etc.

Happy May Day to all oppressed workers everywhere.

Sir Dave, have you ever EVER posted an image? You know how you have to type (or paste) an URL in the info field that comes up? Basically, that's just a marker. When you (or whoever) loads up this page, the image will be pulled from wherever it's located on the web and be displayed here. This uses absolutely no bandwidth on Spidweb's part, rather it uses the bandwidth of the server where the image is housed at.
I hope this clarifies the issue for you.

Jeez. Relax people.
I'd just like to take this opportunity to put in a kind word for tattoos. Tattoos are an ancient art form, and can be very meaningful and beautiful. You can dress up your body as you would decorate your house.
Sure, there are horrible tattos, like prison or bad biker tattoos. An old roommate of mine had a circular celtic design put on her, which ended up looking like a liver spot from further than two steps away.
But there's a tattoo shop right around the corner from where I live, and the stuff that comes out of there is just amazing. The people working there are real artists, whether you like tattoos or not.

No it's not. It's part of the fertile crescent, where many of our agricultural crops (wheat, beans, etc) were first 'domesticated'. It's where irrigation was first developed. Baghdad is still, despite decades of mismanagement and spotty public utilities, surrounded by lush gardens.
The plains of the Tigris and Euphrates have always been agricultural paydirt.
Those plains are sourrounded by desert, however, that's true.

But if left in private hands, public utilities, hospitals, etc, will inevitably lead to profiteering, uneven (at best) standards, etc.
I'm all for utopian societies, but unfortunately they will always remain that, utopian. We can sit here and hope that people will some magical day all be enlightened, but I have my doubts.
It is possible to form communities that work together in harmony, without a central power, but these are always restricted to a small amount of people, all of which are there by consent. I can never see this happening on a national level, unless your country is Liechtenstein or Andorra.

First of all, as has been stated a number of times before, you do not need to smoke marijuana. You can put it in baked goods, make tea and heck, even eat it plain (get a big glass of water, though), all without busting out your junior chemistry set. The effect is the same, if not better (since none of it gets wasted in combustion), although slower in onset. Smoking is just the quickest way to do it.
As an avowed city biker I will tell you that car exhaust is many times worse than smoking pot. Smoking a joint or bowl might be worse than a cigarette or two, but overall you consume much less marijuana than you would cigarettes, or alcohol, for that matter.

I'm for decriminalization not only for the bogus health reasons cited, but for the fact that I fail to see a crime in that act of smoking a natural substance. You harm noone but yourself, but no more than a lot of other activities which are perfectly legal. Statistically speaking, smoking pot is most likely safer than standing on a ladder or biking, for that matter.

I hope not too many people post actual pictures of themselves. I have some pretty vivid mental images of a lot of people, and i'd rather not have them ruined.

That talk's illegal, young man.
Can we move on to the next subject? This one seems to have been pretty well covered.
Back to morality:
Um, yeah, the question at hand was: how can we live with ourselves when people in africa, heck, people under the bridge downtown are starving to death?
