No Taxes! in General

Call me ignorant, but how would taxation work in an anarchic system? It would have to be collected by some sort of central power, wouldn't it, which would be anathema to the whole anarchic idea. Plus, requiring citizens to pay taxes would also smack of power-wielding, especially if the citizens refuse to comply.

Come to think of it, wasn't there a pot referendum in one state on the 2000 ballot? i think it was Nevada, and it did get voted down, although only by about 10%.
But even if that had been approved, would that not have violated the federal controlled substances act?

This would have been an appropriate topic for April 15th.

See, technically, if the government has no income, it can't (well, shouldn't) print money. There is a pretty long history of the founding fathers being against a central bank with minting powers. In the early to mid-eighteen hundreds, money was printed by individual banks, which, of course, was a mess.

Personally, i don't like taxes (who does), but as long as I see something in return, I'll be happy to pay them. Illegitimate wars and a prison-building boom do not make me a happy taxpayer. Also, the roads around here are deplorable.

If the state has no capital, it'll be hard for it to do anything, unless you either force your citizens to provide services, or rely on volunteers. Neither idea sounds very appealing to me.

But i'm sure you'll hear from the anarchists, who might beg to differ.

Well, for PCP you could put the users naked into a padded cell and they'd still find a way to strip the flesh from their arms and legs in order to get at the bugs under their skin. Some things just weren't meant to be consumed by humans.

I think he meant euthanasia, which would be another great debate. I'm all for that, too.

Djur: legalizing ALL drugs? Wow. I hope you like paying taxes. Oh, and have you ever seen someone on PCP? Not pretty.

Also, in an agrarian society, work never stops. The cows still have to be milked on sunday, and the harvest has to be taken in whether it's Labor day or the Annunciation or whatever.
That's all I'm sayin'.

Jeebus. I said I doubt that it would affect high schools much more than it already does, but if it does get legalized, it will obviously be more accessible, and kids who previously didn't have access to it at all might then be able to nick some from Uncle Steve the Stoner when he comes over for Thanksgiving.
As for the DEA, it is a giant Republican pork barrell project. Nixon invented it. There is nothing, i mean NOTHING, the DEA does that the FBI or CIA couldn't do. Same with Homeland Security, another giant waste of taxpayer dollars. The DEA has had absolutely no effect on the international drug trade. But it makes the tough-guy republicans feel like they're doing something to keep their kids safe rather than trying to talk to them, or offer education or treatment. Throw those evil drug monkeys into Jail!
And now, with mandatory sentencing, Joe Stoner with a brick of hash will sit in jail for 20 years while a rapist gets out in three to five. Fair? Who'd you rather have for a roommate, a rapist or a stoner?

Christians! Select your favorite Jesus at:

BTW, they pluralize Jesus as Jesii (2 i's). Someone should email Merriam-Webster for a correct answer.

Now, back to pot (just say pot, it's the same thing but less of a mouthful [figuratively, not literally]). Why are you against legalization, Moc, if you know that it would screw high schools up so bad?
I'm FOR legalization. I don't think it would screw high schools up much more than it already does. But I do think that more kids (not a huge amount, but definitely more) will dull their developing intellectual skills enough to suddenly find themselves at age 25, with two kids, working at McDonalds or the local gas station. They might feel cheated. Legalization should go hand-in-hand with a giant education and outreach campaign. Scrap the DEA and use that money to offer drug treatment, better education opportunities for drug abuse victims, etc.

The only reason I can think of is that you think we should be able to choose on our own whether we want to smoke it or not, and have no interferance. Well, if that's what you think, I think that's crap. If it's not what you think, forget this part too. But if it is, then I think you are wrong because sometimes, the government knows what is good for you when you do not, and why have a government if they don't do what's good for us?
Pot is no more harmful than alcohol or nicotine. All of them will kill you if abused prodigiously. So will donuts and bacon.
As for the government: ha. HA! Did you know that almost two-thirds of the people in Congress have had prior legal troubles? Everything from drunk driving to influence peddling, spousal abuse to mail fraud. You trust those people to know what's right for you? This is not a meritocracy, it's a democracy. Gov't makes mistakes. It's up to the people to correct them.
Letting us smoke pot is not good for us.
Neither is eating cheese or breathing, for that matter. See above.
Now, I know this could be used against me and might make you people think I like dictatorships, but that is not the case. All I'm saying is, sometimes we have to give up our liberties for our own sake. It's like drug rehab (bad analogy, if Scorp is still here, but I'll use it anyway); you tell people to keep you away from something, no matter what they have to do, and they do just that. You may be angry during the process, but it's good for you anyway, and you will be glad afterwards.
You should always ALWAYS protect all of your liberties as fiercely as possible. I won't question your right to start a whacko religious cult or drink yourself to death. If you don't like pot, don't touch the stuff. If it got legalized tomorrow, I honestly doubt i'd make any use of it, but I'm still all for it.
I have not met a single old or middle aged person who smoked pot when they were young, and now wants it legalized.
As stated by various other persons, just to how many middle-aged people have you talked about pot and legalization?
I just think what you do with your life should be up to you, entirely (after reaching full sentience, anyways).

Rebuttal, or back to morality?

I'm all for the decriminalization of marijuana, but i think it would have a pretty devastating effect on the national high school populace. Drinking is bad enough, but at least most people only do that on the weekends. Sneaking a jibber before class is surprisingly easy, and even easier if the stuff would be made available in pill or liquid form.
The quotient of smiling idiots in class would most certainly rise, and inevitably some minds
worth saving would fall by the wayside.

So, is anyone going to pick up the gauntlet and argue to keep it criminalized, or is it time for the next subject?

(Edit: I had some point about the main problem in the US being persecution instead of education and outreach, but...yeah. That.)

I think the fact that we are the culmination of over ten thousand years of civilization clouds our judgement a bit. Our survival is pretty well taken care of, so we don't have to worry about scurvy and wolves every day. Reproduction is not a vital issue anymore, it's a choice. Your children are no longer necessary to ensure your security in old age.

Leisure and free time are a relatively recent invention (the weekend is only a litte more than a hundred years old), although people have always enjoyed merrimaking. Sure, it would be nice to leave a lasting mark behind, but who really can? Accountants, car mechanics, pizza shop workers?

We'll never know why or what.

When exactly was marijuana outlawed in the US anyways? I believe it was in the 30s (because of those EVOL jazz musicians), but have been unable to confirm that.

I am a little amazed that the entire hemp industry went out of business when marijuana became illegal. New England has a long tradition of making ropes and sails from the stuff, and there are still a lot of old rope factories around in coastal towns. You can make all sorts of useful items from the stuff and it grows extremely fast.

I somehow do not foresee the legalization of pot for a while (if ever, in my lifetime), however. This current conservative backsliding atmosphere and other pressing concerns (war, war, and soon, more war) make this an ephemeral concern. Also the pro-hemp people always come across as dirty hippies with the Santana blaring in the background, which definitely hinders their cause. There's a pro-hemp rally on the Boston Common every year, and it's just an excuse for thousands of college students to get high as hades while some *****in' bands are playing, man. The political results of the rally are practically nil, every year.

A much more pressing issue to me is mandatory sentencing, which is positively evil; and the DEA (a giant useless money sucking vortex of bureaucracy).

In Germany, expressing neo-nazi or nazi ideology is officially forbidden by the state and will be persecuted. Also, the state there has a tendency to outlaw video games or movies that it deems to violent or immoral, but these bans are hardly ever effective (and long-lasting, since our cultural standards are pretty rock-bottom already). Germany, however, remains a hotbed of free speech regardless.

As for the cannabis thing: my mother lives in the netherlands, and, visiting her over the years, i have noticed some changes. Overall, there haven't been terrible changes to society; the expected end of civilization hasn't materialized yet. Tourism (of a less savory kind) has increased, as have property crimes (pickpocketing, bag and luggage theft, burglaries). Holland has its usual share of homeless people, although it seems to me that a much higher percentage of them are young people who are quite obviously involved with drugs (no, i didn't take random drug tests, but if you're swaying back and forth and don't smell like booze....). A lot of the young homeless/bums seem to be from other countries, because they will hit you up for money in english.

I won't go into the medical aspects of smoking pot, but it's not too dissimilar to smoking cigarettes, which is still legal. I would push to outlaw operating machinery/driving under the influence of pot, same as drinking.

Overall, I would say i'd feel a lot safer around people that have smoked a doobie rather than a bunch of kids that have been drinking.

So...you suggest instead of legalizing one natural substance (THC, found in the wacky tobacky) you replace it instead with a concentrated version of another natural substance (capsaicin)? And the difference would be....?
