You can tell how debate-starved we are by looking at this thread's overnight growth. :) quote:Synergy, you are right that you don't have to be a scientist to discuss phylosophy. However, people will judge the validity of your arguments based on what they can personally verify. I know very little about scientific basis of modern medicine, but I know something about physics. So when I see that you completely misundrstand the basic principles of physics, I have to assume that the rest of your theories are equally wrong. So I stopped reading your posts after the above point. You might have had some valid arguments in there, but they were lost because you started out talking about things you don't understand. Nobody expects a phylosopher to understand physics as well as a physicist, but if you are going to use scientific terms and claim to base your phylosophy on scientific findings, you have to have a strong understanding of these terms and findings to be taken seriously. PS Here are corrections to your statements about quantum mechanics. 1. Matter <-> energy. (Matter and energy can be converted into each other.) However "matter = energy" is false. Electrons (and other particles) sometimes act like billiard balls (matter) and sometimes like waves on water (energy), however, the two states are completely different, just like ice and water wapor can be converted into each other, but you can't say "ice = water wapor". (The analogy is not quite accurate, because you need extra energy to turn ice into wapor, but it gives the right idea.) The equations of Newtonian mechanics are still correct when dealing with everyday objects. 2. Uncertanty principle means that the more you know about particle's position, the less you know about direction of its motion. This does not mean that electrons in orbit around atom's nucleus are just functions. Think of blades of a rotating propeller. Those blades are a blur, similar to "probability cloud" of electron's orbit. If you stop the time, you'll see solid blades with fixed positions, but as long as propeller is rotating you can't do that. Similarly, if you stopped time and looked at an atom, you'd see solid electrons somewhere in their orbits, but as long as the time is going, you can't see precisely where the electrons are. 3. I am not sure where you got "all matter radiates energy" and "elements are frequencies" from. If you are talking about spectroscopy, it refers to ability of elements to absorb (and release) radiation of specific frequencies. This doesn't mean that elements "are frequencies", or that they radiate energy all the time. It just means that if an element has an extra energy it needs to get rid of, it will do it by emitting light of one of it favorite frequencies. PPS I am not sure about a couple things I've said above (it's been a while since my last physics class), so SoT, or somebody else who knows this stuff very well, please tell me if anything is wrong. quote:Не так уж и трудно найти электронный переводчик. Но к сожалению результаты его работы оставляют желать лучшего. Google says: Do not be too difficult to find the electronic translator. But unfortunately the results of his work leaves much to be desired. I'd say: It's not too hard to find an automatic translator. Unfortunately, the results of its work leave much to be desired. I am impressed at the quality of Google's translation. They even recognized an idiom "оставляют желать лучшего", whose literal translation would be "leave to want better". However, it's still pretty easty to tell the difference between a real translation and a translation made by a machine. -------------------- Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword, For it too has the power to kill. I have an install file for an early beta version with about two dozen levels, most of which are tutorials. I can upload that somewhere (Radiant's new forums, perhaps), if Radiant doesn't mind the betas being distributed. -------------------- Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword, For it too has the power to kill. Thanks for suggestions. The "load pictures" checkbox just controls text only mode. I've played around with cache settings, but even with several GB set aside and no privacy options selected it insists on reloading all pages whenever browser restarts. I have a feeling there is Firefox equivalent of "Check for newer versions of stored pages" setting somewhere that I am missing. -------------------- Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword, For it too has the power to kill. While I don't normally play on torment, it seems pretty obvious that 0-intelligence creations are usually worse for any level. If you can't control your creations, you loose all tactical advantage you have as a smart human against a dumb AI and have to rely purely on firepower. The gain in firepower from not buying two points of intelligence is almost never enough to compensate for loss of tactical advantage. Yes, you can do well with 0-intelligence creations. However, in most cases you'd do even better with creations you can control. quote:To get your quotes to work, make sure the closing tag (word "/QUOTE" in brackets) is at the end of the text you are quoting. -------------------- Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword, For it too has the power to kill. This looks like a perfect place to ask: My Firefox at home for some reason keeps reloading all pictures every time the browser is opened. Is there a setting to tell it to stop doing it? (I know there is a setting in IE that controls how often a page is reloaded, but I can't find one in Firefox.) -------------------- Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword, For it too has the power to kill. Did you join any of the fractions? If you did, ask your fraction leader for instructions. If you didn't, go to Loyalist Encampment area and talk to the loyalist shapers there. Once you've fulfilled all instructions from your leader (or loyalist leader if you aren't allied with anybody), go to the place where game began and leave through the exit area to the south. If you never joined any factions and failed to kill some of the people loyalist leader wants you to kill, you will find the ending to be very unsatisfactory. -------------------- Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword, For it too has the power to kill. Generally, asking for a custom title is a good way to make sure you'll never get one, unless you privately ask Drakey for something insulting. (Rumor has it that's how Motrax got his title.) quote:1. "Every nation has the right to self-determination, including complete separation." - Comrade Lenin It seems Canada decided to follow the proud tradition of USSR, Yugoslavia, etc. As Dintiradan's article correctly pointed out, once a certain ethnicity-dominated region gets special status, all other ethnicities demand the same status. Then you come to minorities within the special region demanding special status for themselves, etc. Eventually you end up with about one civil war per two ethnicities. (At least that was the ratio during/after collapse of USSR and Yugoslavia.) (I am not saying Canada will collapse into a civil war any time soon, but that's where this path of ultra-nationalism within a multi-national country eventually leads.) You get equally semi-random text whenever you Google anything. The text you see under the search result link contains just a few words of context for your search term, rather than any kind of description. In this case "Drakon Fortress" is the Alt-text for image at the start of the first paragraph, so Google, viewing the page in text-only mode, sees those words as the start of the first sentence. Are we just making up amusing cheat effects here? If so... skinbrightassunlight - Makes you completely canister-crazed, regardless of number of canisters you've consumed. All dialogue options become "(Attack)", "Die rogue scum!(Attack)", and "MUAHAHAHA(Attack)". Iamcool - Turns you into Drakon, enabling the use of Drakon Geneforges from later games, with Geneforge-using Gf1 endings. Imcool - Turns you into an ornk, disabling further use of cheat codes. -------------------- Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword, For it too has the power to kill. You know a board is in trouble when one of the most active threads is "do we need spam to keep the boards alive?" :P SPAM is good only when you have no other meat to eat. And electronic spam is never good and shouldn't be posted. If you think your post is spam, don't post it. What people are confused about is that last month saw a combination of increase in legitimate activity and increase in dumb spam. The following things aren't spam: - discussions related to Spidweb games (including anticipation of upcoming games, Geneforge morality threads, etc.) - serious discussions of political, social, and other issues - occasional surveys and quizes - fanfics, parodies, and other social activity The following things are spam: - private conversations (if you've made 2 out of 5 most recent posts on the thread, take it to PM/AIM) - pointless/dumb one-liners ("To Spam!" was funny the first time it was posted, by the fifth time it became extremely annoying. More generally, unless you are one of the few people who have a special talent for 1-liners (SoT, Drew), don't post them more then a couple times a month.) - "me too" posts (If somebody already said exactly what you are planning to say, don't say anything) - useless chat like welcoming sombody back from a 2-day absence, replying to a random post with a comment irrelevant to anything else on the thread and not interesting to anybody but the post's author, etc. Genearally, if your post is only going to be interesting to a person at whom you are directing it, use PM/AIM. -------------------- Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword, For it too has the power to kill. Another bit of game advice is that doors requiring rediculous amounts of living tools aren't meant to be opened. (They often contain either quest rewards or faction-specific areas.) As for using the editors/trainers, simply use the links in forum header to download them. Then follow instructions. (You have to replace some files in Geneforge/Data folder on your computer with the files you download. Then start the game and interact with sign/book/person who contains the editor. (See instructions for details.)) -------------------- Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword, For it too has the power to kill. 1) Which is your favorite Avernum game? Avernum 2 2) What is your favorite melee weapon class? Swords, dual-wielded by my ambidexterious fighter. (Some things were more fun in Exile.) 3) What is your favorite missile weapon class? Slings, because they don't require tons of ammunition. 4) What is your favorite spell in Avernum? Major Blessing (or whatever the Avernum equivalent is called) 5) What spell did you like in an earlier Avernum game, but was removed in a later sequel? Anything that works for chopping off heads. 7) What is your favorite spear/pike/halberd? Anything that works for chopping off big heads. 8) What is your favorite bow/crossbow? Anything that works... 9) What is your favorite thrown missile? Razordisks are fun because they are exotic weapons associated with Vahnatai. 10) Which enemy type do you hate the most? Lots of spiders (web, web, web, ...), or magic users that summon legions of weak monsters, making battles last forever. 11) If you could stand-in for any character in the game aside from the party, which character would you choose? Trajkov (*spoiler for Gf1 removed*) 12) If you could stop or change one event in Avernum, what would it be? Any of the demon summonings. 13) Who is your favorite character, aside from the party? see #11 14) Which Black Shade did you like the most? (A4) I didn't like A4 enough to meet any of them. 15) If you could destroy one being in Avernum, who/what would it be? Rentar-Ihrno, so the plots would get better villains. 16) Who is your favorite dragon? Motrax. 17) What type of armor do you prefer? (Leather, chain mail, etc.) Mithril chainmail. 18) Aside from adventuring, which profession would you take in Avernum? mage 19) Do you prefer to fight enemies, or would you rather flee? fight 20) What reasons do you have for becoming adventurers? adventure 21) Who is your favorite mage/priest outside of your party? Motrax (dragons have access to both mage and priest spells) 22) Who is your favorite villain? Trjakov (he is a villain if you play as a loyalist) 23) If you had the chance to have a cameo of yourself inserted in any of the Avernum series, would you take it? Who wouldn't? 24) Who was the most annoying non-party character in the Avernum series? not sure 25) What is your favorite city in Avernum or the Empire? not sure 26) If you had just one character in your party, what skills would he/she be trained in? Priest/fighter/mage (although I never completed any Avernums with a singleton, so I am not sure if this skill mix would work) 27) What's your favorite Xian Item? which ones were there? 28) If you could travel to any of the continents on the surface, which one would you choose? Imperial capital must be an impressive place. 29) Which skill do you think is the MOST valuable in the entire Avernum series? not sure 30) Which skill do you think is the LEAST valuable in the entire Avernum series? not sure 31) What is your favorite Avernum cuisine? Is this the question where we show our sence of humor by saying "weird meat"? 32) If there was one thing you could add to the Avernum series, what would it be? Exile's spell system, with all the fun spells. 33) What's your favorite special item? Orb of Thralni 34) Do you have your characters wear pants? Only if they give a stat bonus. 35) If Avernum had lost the Avernum/Empire War, what do you think would've happened? Retroactive change of all sentences from "exile" to "execution". The idea sounds intriguing. Unfortunately, the game isn't as easily modifiable as it might seem. You can add quests by changing existing dialogue and area scripts. (This is how character editors work.) However, as far as I know, you can't add anything to the map, or integrate completely new scripts. Adding a few quests might be a fun challenge, but don't try anything too ambitious until you get a good idea of what you can and can't modify.
