The posting games are always the topics that stay on topic the most.

I'd say more often than not a topic gets derailed because it is either boring or there's not much to say about it and if this isn't the case they usually find their way back to the original topic. On the subject of cold weather, ever notice how temperatures affect different longitudes differently? For example, 50F is T-shirt weather in the most northern parts of the US, but is coat weather in the deep south lol. Also my favorite color is black. This may be the most insignificant poll in the history of SSF lol.

edit: I meant the fav. color poll was insignificant

A prime example of how topics get derailed.

And conversational drift isn't necessarily because the current topic is worn out. It can also be caused by some new fact or opinion entering the thread, in which during the process of discussing it, another new fact or opinion is introduced, so on, so forth.

And before you know it, a topic on Drakons and trainers gets turned into a discussion of the Vlish mac. :)

I thought the new topic was more interesting. The fact that a derailed topic can last longer than the original say something about the interests of the posters.

Such as this one, for crying out loud. I tried to derail it immediately, an attempt at irony so obvious that I was hoping it might nudge over the line into ironical obviousness. It was ignored. And now we're on page two, still about topics getting derailed. This obviously and ironically goes to show something, but I'm too piqued to think what.

That a topic about derailment, despite frequent attempts, can't be derailed?

Yeah, that is pretty interesting. You would think this topic would derail rather quickly.

This looks like a perfect place to ask: My Firefox at home for some reason keeps reloading all pictures every time the browser is opened. Is there a setting to tell it to stop doing it? (I know there is a setting in IE that controls how often a page is reloaded, but I can't find one in Firefox.)

There is an option to not automatically load the pictures. It's under Options>Content. That might be what you're looking for.

That just makes the pictures disappear entirely.

You need to meddle with your cache settings a bit - enable the cache, increase memory, set it not to be cleared when the browser closes, or whatever is necessary.

ERrr., hem...
It even managed to stay on topic,,,, (somewhat) without someone even coming in to say anything.
I have noticed that sometimes, after the select thread gets derailed, that someone interjects a post that has to do with the subject matter, but, that which ultimately gets ignored and everyone seems to forget its there....
hint hint...

Thanks for suggestions. The "load pictures" checkbox just controls text only mode. I've played around with cache settings, but even with several GB set aside and no privacy options selected it insists on reloading all pages whenever browser restarts. I have a feeling there is Firefox equivalent of "Check for newer versions of stored pages" setting somewhere that I am missing.

Are you sure that your browser is downloading the graphic files for every image every time you visit a web page? It just may be acting slowly. Messing around with the options for automatically updating changed pages in the cache will not accomplish anything if the cache itself never successfully stored these files from the pages in the first place.

It is always possible that the pictures in question have been set not to be cached if all else doesn't make sense.

Alas, I know how that feels. One desperate attempt to steer the topic back on track, which goes completely and utterly ignored.

Since this has become something of a general advice topic, I wonder if anyone who speaks Japanese could translate the text in these pictures:

FYI, asking people to give you a karma rating here is generally like asking them to give you a low rating.

Just so you know.

That's it! The problem is that when this topic gets derailed, it's staying on topic.
