That's his problem. Fort Draco hasn't. You'll get your things identified in Formello later on.

Well, a low level party is a low level party. Not every one needs the best of weapons and armour right away. There is a lot of stuff you can do just wearing leather armour and wielding a bronze sword. If your pole fighter feels stuck with his stone tipped spear, he'll have to wait and learn to make the best use of it.

You don't need that much money right away. Collect the coins your enemies drop; buy little, you'll find most of the things you'll need; train a little, if you can afford it. Everything else comes with time.

edit: remember to bless and hasten at least one of your fighters, have one mage know 'fireball', and your priest cast 'wound'. That helps.

Yes, it should stop. Emperor, do yourself a favour and drop it. This is not about winning. Stareye is a scientist. He wants proof, and if you insist on details he may want a statistic. ;)

Just get him off your back and have fun on the boards as you had before.

Some shops will only sell and not buy, some only buy the kind of stuff they sell (if they sell weapons, they'll buy weapons from you, but not armour), some buy all the stuff you have. There should be two shops keepers close to the trainer in Fort Draco who'll buy weapons and armour from you, for everything else you'll have to wait until you reach Formello.

edit: The Mystic was faster

There's space enough to walk a bit, and that's all that's needed. When you start moving, monsters move too.

How, when Alorael asked you to edit your posts, he didn't mean that you'd have to delete previous content and edit in new content all the time. He was just asking you not to doublepost. There are very young members on this board who'd probably triple- and quadruplepost without thinking much about it, if the mods didn't insist on editing.

Ohhh.. I'll make up for that by admitting that in the north we all wear fishermen's shirts and scarves, eat Labskaus and sing shanties. ;)

Do they live in the south of the country? Because a lot of those stereotypes seem to refer to (offen outdated) habits of southern areas, especially Bavaria. Living in the north myself, I would have a hard time trying to find 'kraut eaters'.

You need a trainer to increase your skills. There's one in Fort Draco who, for a small fee, does offer that service to you. I've forgotten how E2 handles the procedure. If it is the same as in E1, ask 'train' and a menue pops up that lets you choose the character you want to buy the training for. Alternatively you can just click on 'buy' in the dialogue window.

Not every town offers training, just as not every town has a sage who identifies your stuff, or a fletcher to get new arrows, or an alchemist to stock up on potions.

edit: seems you found out on your own while I got me a coffee, but I let the post stand as it is :)

Nephils. And the armour, though nice to have, was not the most important thing you picked up. There's something else that you'll need in a very little while.

I don't know how far into the game you are, but if that was your first trip to Fort Draco, you'll find a lot of things you can do there and east of that ominous bridge that help you gain a level or two.

*big grin* I've restarted both Exile and Avernum and am leisurely replaying E1 right now, enjoying it greatly. I'd forgotten how vast and dangerous the caves seem in the beginning, where the lack of streets and pathways in the outdoors, your lowly stats and pitiful weaponry, and the constant respawn of monsters keep you on your toes. Avernum's outdoor pathways changed that atmosphere for me and are probably the reason why the remake felt more linear right away. Getting to a town 'somewhere west' is an adventure when that's all the orientation you have and you confront a forest that you may or may not be able to pass through. A street leading to said town in almost next to no time just doesn't compare.

I need a plot and an atmosphere that get me hooked and do battle when I have to. I'm not seeking it. Planning to avoid a fight that looks as if it can't be avoided and you don't feel up to can be just as much fun as looking for strategies to outmanoeuver your opponent in actual battle - as long as you manage to reach your destination, of course.

E2/A2 are both beautiful games, true gems, just as Nethergate is. Whatever version you prefer, you'll love them.

edit: spelling corrected

It should perhaps be mentioned that 'Dark Waters' is a part of E2/A2, while 'The Za-Khazi Run' is a scenario that comes with Blades of Exile/Avernum.

Alorael, who disagrees about Avernum being linear. The plots and their arrangements are exactly the same as in Exile.
You are right of course, Alo. It was nevertheless what I felt when I first played Avernum. I didn't try to analyze the why and would have to replay the games to see what led to that impression.

Quick newbie question in Avernum 4

E1/A1 is your entrée into a cave world, an underground terrain where those unfortunates who didn't manage to obey the empire's strict set of rules were thrown into to die or struggle to survive with no option of return to the surface. You get the idea?

When powerful mages were banned to the caves they fought monsters and demons and created conditions that made life possible, even enjoyable down below. Your party arrives in Exile/Avernum, so you explore and get to know the world and participate in its struggles. You may finally assist a mage seeking revenge and assassinate the surface emperor.

In E2/A2 you are part of an underground world at war with the empire. The emperor's death has shown the cave world's unexpected power and the empire now seeks to annihilate the pit. While the war is raging, magical barriers appear everywhere, blocking the paths, barriers of a type unkown and not of surface origin. It appears that a people far older than you and natural citizens of the caves has taken offence because of a deed you know nothing about. You will have to be your people's ambassador and journey into the unknown.

In E3/A3 your battle with the empire has been successful and your people have started to contemplate means of returning to the surface. You are an insignificant party sent to the surface to explore; you are easily replaceable. But what you meet above is unforeseen desaster, and if you ever want a chance up there you'll have to support the surface dwellers, if they'll let you.

E2/A2's plot is by far the best and it is therefore the most highly recommended game.

E3/A3 gives you both cave world and surface experience which has a charm of its own. Also E3 is easier to get used to than E1 and E2, because of its changed dialogue system and overall appearance.

The Exile series is less streamlined, less linear and 'polished' than its Avernum remake. There's more freedom to follow your own paths and much more to explore. The graphics, though older, nevertheless are of higher quality than the Avernum ones. Avernum is technically more advanced and that's what a lot of people prefer, but the original draft had more content.

A4 is a mixture of Avernum and Geneforge elements, therefore no outdoors anymore. If you ask just me, it successfully got rid of almost everything that made me fall in love with Exile a decade ago, but those who like the occasional hack an' slash seem to enjoy it nonetheless.

I think you'll like Exile/Avernum. Both come with an editor: Blades of Exile and Blades of Avernum. There's a great number of very good Exile scenarios that you can download for free once you've bought BoE, also a number of Avernum scenarios, downloadable when you buy Blades of Avernum. Exile 3's engine is somewhat different from E1 and E2; if the first two are too oldfashioned for you, you may still enjoy the third.

Edit: I’d like to see this play. Is it a comedy?
'Idomeneo' is a Mozart opera and a socalled 'opera seria', meaning a serious or tragic piece. It deals with the relation of gods and men. The severed heads are not part of the opera's libretto, they were added as part of the stage producer's (Hans Neuenfels) interpretation of it.

I wonder though. Will we ever see Richard Strauss' 'Salome' on german stages again? Where Salome dances an ecstatic and very erotic dance with John the Baptist's severed head?

I haven't played for a couple of days, but had time this evening and am confronting a problem again. I went to the peninsula, then (searching for a path to return to the camp) to Fort Alora. I opened the northern gates and went uphill until I reached the river. Then, using the stepping stones and flying the rest, I crossed the river and returned to the camp to report to Kass. Unfortunately Kass doesn't give me an option to tell him what I found. What went wrong?

it is a bit confusing to have the sun "wearing" it, because Avernum doesn't "wear" the Empire either.
It makes a lot of sense, if you think about it. Who got thrown into Exile? Everyone who was creative, individualistic and had a mind of their own. Exile/Avernum has everything it takes to create an empire, though it may lack that which just clings to the power that is. If the empire wants to rejuvenate itself, it needs its cave world, its dynamic, its life and its sun.

As a picture I like Alorael's best, but TGM's offers the best blend. Maybe he'd be willing to come up with a few more variations?
