Reckon we should perhaps answer their (in search of gender) question? A little Englishification: I'm getting fun out of playing the games mentioned on this site. They're all funny! Geneforge is especially the bomb. Where is the demo version of Geneforge downloadable from (this could also be a question on how to register). And now for something completely different... Would you let me know what kind of games everyone recommends - roleplaying, Action, and so forth. Let me know if the site that hosts the game is also bomb-like in nature. Are they freeware or shareware (no idea what this one meant really). I think it would be grouse if these games were made for Japan. Posts: 304 | Registered: Monday, October 1 2001 07:00 |

You also forget that according to E3, the Third Empire Army is infinite. How many of these infinite armies does the Empire posses? Surely enough to stomp a few caves full of pansy frail (bite me!) Vahnatai! Go humans! Posts: 304 | Registered: Monday, October 1 2001 07:00 |

How come a few of the cool UBB features have been diabled, like timezones and a "Last Post By" field in post list screens (ie General)? In most forums I can set my timezone as +10 and all the times look nice and real, I know it's a feature of UBB, why's it off? And the other, less-well explained feature... looks for example... Ambrosia. Shortened mercifully. See how the Last Post field lists the person that posted? Why not here? Just having a whine, Md. There's a couple of debates there: Is South America more devoted about it's sports than North; or just more violent But back to poor Australia and it's never-going-to-get-a-spot-in-the-world-cup position. Australia will never be good enough to play in the world cup until it's actually been in it and gathered some following over here. Cricket is about 40 times more popular than football at the moment, even though it's payed as a "sunday afternoon" game far less. Why? Because our team gets to go over to other countries and thump arse, something Australians love to watch - or even better, watch teams come over here and have their arses thumped (such as when the Brittish Rugby team the Lions came over here - ner ). There's a lot of good football players in Australia, it's just that they're doing other stuff at the moment, like playing more popular sports. Our greatest cricket player of all time was one accused by England as being a robot - surely we've got just as good footballers? Grumble. I really like footy and the only time they ever show it on TV is on SBS (a channel on foriegn affairs), and even then it's only English premier league stuff. Md. Humans simply have far superior numbers. And their reproduction time is (most likely) faster than Vahnatai, so even if the spindly-legged freaks were able to force a stalemate, humans would over power them eventually. Also, humans are too greedy to lose. The Vahnatai would probably go and seal themselves up in a cave if it ever started looking grim. There's no question concerning the Slithzerikai or the Nephilim - The kitties are useless and the Sliths could be held off by Exile. The might of the Empire would crush them. One sec... (*takes off ring and has a better look*). Well, my ancient Mordorian is a little rusty, but I'd say that's just about correct - where'd you get it from? The Silmarillion? If so, which chapter? I just looked and it's not in OF THE RINGS OF POWER AND THE THIRD AGE. Maybe it's in the Appendixes of The Lord Of The Rings, or in the part of Quenta that covers when Gorthaur made it. Oh, and one more thing. Not wanting to defend "lost_king" but his sig says it was a Nazgûl that said "Ash nag gimbatu, ash nac francartulouk, ash nac aratook", not what's inscribed on the One Ring - maybe it was just on fire or it's horse was lame, and really pissed off? I mean, ok if "lost_king" had said "Hey, look at this, this is what's on the One Ring in phonetic Common Tongue translation..." But hey, who's counting - aside from me. EDIT: More annoyance at your incredulous sig Unless you're actually that guy that calls himself Someone With Not So Perfect Grammar, then could you please change the spelling mistakes in your sig; at least? Elendil is spelt without the last e and Elessar like that. [ Sunday, August 31, 2003 22:28: Message edited by: Majordomo ] Posts: 304 | Registered: Monday, October 1 2001 07:00 |

The general concensus on the best way to prevent piracy is to make the application itself web capable. There are tons of apps that do this already, of course, they call it "looking for a new version" but in actual fact it's far more likely that they're checking up with some online database to compare registration info. Someone said random before, but I'd like to point out that it already is randomised. The serial number you send to Spidweb is a randomly generated number, it's also the input to an equation. You send the number away, it goes through the same equation at Spidweb, it gets sent back to you. The only real problem with this shareware model is that it's entirely self-contained (theoretically); you can observe the application when it puts the randomly generated serial number through the equation locally. The idea of an outside computer as an authority creates an element smart (but evil) people can't control - they can only work around it (like the BoE hack). Finally, shareware needs to be an entire package. Only giving the user half, then letting them download or buy (over the counter) is just a demo, not an unlockable shareware application. It's a crying shame that there's so many scummy people out there that can't even take the time to shake their mummy's arm long enough to get a couple of bucks so they can give it to starving shareware developers. I'm hungry, let's go get a Taco. Md. Posts: 304 | Registered: Monday, October 1 2001 07:00 |

Grumble, I don't like football (round-ball kind). It's the only game the Brits seem to be able to beat us at. Maybe if FIFA let us into the Cup without having to fight some South American team for a spot then it might get some serious following here, but as it is, football is nowhere near as popular as leage, rugby or even (god forbid) shirt tearing AFL (which shares some similar aspects to football - hot pants ). Our women's footie team kicks arse, but as long as we haven't got a spot in the World Cup, footy is going nowhere in Australia. Damn you FIFA, you win this time. Md. quote:I was wondering if someone would say that - just goes to show people actually do read posts before slapping their own in. Anyway, yeah, I was just using The Will And The Word as an example of a magic system. Looking back, I probably would've thought what you did too reading my post. Dave Duncan has a crazy Words Of Power system. Works really well and fits in with the world he created perfectly. Md. Posts: 304 | Registered: Monday, October 1 2001 07:00 |

Hey I'm guilty, I remember someone asking me once how to turn the Editor back on in Avernum, so I made a rescompare patch (this is the old days of OS9) that altered the prefs file and changed the Editor flag - unfortunately it changed the registration flag too. Good thing I pulled it before anyone could get their grubby little fingers on it. Anyway, my point is. Anyone with a reasonable head for this stuff and a few hours could crack the mod based encryption with reverse eng. Fortunately Jeff's just so lovable we want to keep him well fed and making games for as long as possible. Cheers Jeff, you keep making 'em, I'll keep paying for 'em. Md. I'll sel my soul. As far as I'm concerned the idea of a soul is as farcical as the toothfairy. If I can make money out of it by selling it to someone who fancies themself a real-life Milhouse, then all the better. Md. Posts: 304 | Registered: Monday, October 1 2001 07:00 |

Ok, I'm reading A Wreath Of Stars, which is one of Bob Shaw's lesser novels (I thought Other Days, Other Eyes was pretty damn cool, and Nightwalk tops even it). But the author I'm reading at the moment is Dave Duncan. I've been hooked on him since one of my friends gave me Upland Outlaws (book 2 of A Handful Of Men) back in 2000. He's originally from somewhere in Britain, but he moved to Canada and became a manager of a petrochemical plant or something. Now he's an author - and a DAMN good one at that. The cutting humour he uses in his books, and the vividness with which he describes his characters and the worlds they live in is so great that when I think back to scenes in the book, I'd swear that I'd watched it as full-colour cinema. And don't get me wrong, he doesn't use lengthy Tolkien-esque descriptions either, everything is precise and highly polished (unlike - and I know I'm going to make enemies here - Eddings etc). Ok, so I liked the Belgariad, and the Mallorean was basically the Belgariad mk2, but seriously! It's just too damn bland sometimes. You should check out the system of magic (ie The Will And The Word) used in some of Duncan's books! It's FULL ON. Anyway, enough harping from me, if you like Eddings, you'll think Duncan is his superior within 5 pages - trust me. Md. Oh yeah, Duncan has a similar bent on humour as Vogel too. Concerning the "small number of people in government doesn't work" comment... A whole stack of people in government works even less! Democratic governments can never agree on anything, at least Autocratic governments get stuff done. And no, I haven't been watching too much StarWars Episode II. Dammit. Md.
