I'm getting me a Wii. Those things are so god damn awesome I can't wait to get my grubby little fingers on it. I can so see myself (and a billion other nerds around the world) taking hold of the Wiimote and making light-sabresque 'wooshing' noises. Dum dum dum DAH DAAAA, da da da DAH DAAAA! Yeeeehar! *slash* Cop that imperial SCUM!!! Ahhh... The Wii - I was sold the minute they said it was made by Nintendo. Md. Posts: 304 | Registered: Monday, October 1 2001 07:00 |

quote:Which is why you made Blades, right? One of the elements in RPGs I find enjoyable is book-style Machiavellian intrigue. Stuff like the way you join the Scimitar (I'm talking E1 here), like how you find that cave with a heap of chopped up Empire soldiers, and a Scimitar carved on the wall. Or those epic battles in E3, where the dialogue describes some horrific scene and then ends with an OK button labelled with something like 'Oh dear...' I think the A4 engine gives a much more personal feel to the world as well, that feeling that you're never really outdoors is cool, the fear that those pesky Goblins may just chase you all the way down to the front gate of the damn fort is actuality, rather than just, well, alluded to. I agree with Al on the RPGs-being-fun-when-you're-pushed-into-a-role thing as well, just that it's a problem finding things-to-be-pushed-into that everyone finds cool and exciting (KOTOR *definitely* delivered on this, with KOTOR2 destroying it entirely). That would be appropriately sneaky. I think I'm going to protest against his middle-man extortion and not bring him any more bars. Hmmm... Actually, I don't think I need anything more in Fort Monastery, so I don't mind if they get a little angry at me for a spot of murder... Md. Posts: 304 | Registered: Monday, October 1 2001 07:00 |

Hmmm... I started off making a custom party this time around playing A4, mostly because I wanted one of those new fangled Theifmages™. But when I tried to re-create just the simple soldier class, I found myself short of skill points! What's the deal? Why do the pre-made classes get more skill points than the custom ones? Or am I wrong, and was just really tired (or just generally stupid) at the time? Just seemed weird to me. Md. Posts: 304 | Registered: Monday, October 1 2001 07:00 |

How do you trash them? I'm level 23 and these pylons just freeze me and zap me to death. Arg! Can you pick them off outside their range with area effect spells or something? (ie. targeting the space just before them so they can't reach you?) Some pointers would really be appreciated, I've already tried rushing through sneakily using haste to dart around corners and keep out of sight of them, but I keep getting stuck in places where I can't leapfrog to more cover and having to revert to a save... Maybe I just need to do something else first, but I feel like I've just about done everything else already. You're gonna die Rentar! Man, I really feel like revenging Erika. Md. Ok, so it was that little chamber near Grindstone... Is there anyone that directs you to the place (apart from the fisherman near there that describes it's location?). Hmmm, just did the third then, and the conversation options suggested to me that I (as in my party) had no idea what was going on... Thanks guys! Md. Ok, yeah, she sells me spells. I assume it was the weird testing thing in the circle south-east of Formello? How did that lead onto the place north of Formello? Did the priest tell me and I've just missed it or something? Or does it not lead on, and it's a find-it-yourself sort of thing...? Md. Posts: 304 | Registered: Monday, October 1 2001 07:00 |

Hey, I'm busy bashing my way through A4 (and thinking it's awesome, by the way) but I'm, a little worried I've missed something. I was cleaning out the tunnels north of Fort Dranlon and I found a weird magically locked door that had a map-like thing on it that directed me to a tunnel north of Formello. So I went there, and it was some testing thing, sort of like what the Vahnatai make you do in Crystal Souls, however, it seemed it was the *second* of the tests. Where the hell is the first one? I figure it must be in the north-east quadrant of Avernum (still keep going to call it Exile, A4 is really reminding me of the 'old days'). But I'm pretty sure I've explored everywhere up there... It could be that I *did* do it, just that I don't remember - I sort of had a break between hitting the registration barrier, and getting the full vers, and I don't remember many details of then... If it's the chamber just west of Grindstone, then I've done that already. Grrr! I can't remember it though! So, if someone can really tentatively hint me in the direction of where this testing set of quests starts off, I'd be much obliged. Thanks heaps, Md. Ahhh... Oh, wait, that still happens now. Hmmm. Wow, this has been my first post in over a year... Md. Posts: 304 | Registered: Monday, October 1 2001 07:00 |

I guess I was 9 when I first played Exile - more than 10 years ago. I can remember sitting around at school discussing with my friends what was going on and how we'd beat the next apex bad dude that inevitably popped up. I can remember my mum threatening to tear the power cord from the wall at 11PM. I can remember writing down the prices of all the shops and treating it like a sacred tome. God! I LIVED that game. I think the reason I still enjoy what are essentially pretty repetitive games is because they rekindle the youthful spark of adventure and detachment from our even more repetitive world. It's much easier to go there and kill that demon than it is to go there and kill that exam... Dammit. Md. Posts: 304 | Registered: Monday, October 1 2001 07:00 |

Pfwoar! Watch the sparks fly! I personally have great faith in Jeff's fantabulous game creating skills. I think if he goes ahead and plows the (also fantabulous) Exile series into the ground even more by making Avernum 4-through-6, I'll still buy 'em. Anyway, I was always suss on this Avernum business. Talk about milking an old favorite! It's almost like being a covers-band! Sigh. Bring on A4, I say, perhaps this time around he'll focus a little more on the political arm of things - perhaps you'll be allowed a little more open-endedness in the story lines (as has been the recent trend). And perhaps a more versatile game interface and engine. Md. Posts: 304 | Registered: Monday, October 1 2001 07:00 |

I don't think we'll see an Avernum 4. Jeff always used to bring up the "if I have to wake up to the thought of designing the Tower Of Magi for a 4th time, I'll kill myself" excuse when he was pestered for an Exile IV, so I don't think his outlook will have changed much. As for a truely NEW game, as in, not a continuation of a previous story line, THAT'D ROCK! I remember when Geneforge came out, I was all "ewww" (probably cause it ran shabby on my 601 PPC). But now that I think of it? A truely new game would be sweet. Jeff came up with a killer concept with the Exile series, 10 to 1 says he can do it again. Md. Sigh. Md. And yes, this is PURE spam. Congrats on having your debut topic reach 3 pages though! Edit: Oh yeah, on the topic of CUTE. You wouldn't believe how insanely insulting it is when you've just spent 2 years programming a fricking AIBO to play soccer, and then some chick wearing all pink walks over picks is up and says "Ohhhh!!! It's *SO* cute!!!". ARG! I wish our department would distribute Paintball guns so we could whack everyone that calls them cute. Maybe I'm just ticked off cause a $2k dog pulls more chicks than me... Who has 1337? A tenner says their name is "UBER LEET HAX0R", and their description fields are filled with stuff like "ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US". Md. Edit: Ok, actually had a look. How dissapointing! Not even a "one post n00b", oh no, couldn't even manage that! Lousy ZERO post n00b! Definitely NOT a 1337 haX0r. And I'd know, cause I have so much 1337ness, I had to rent out one of those garage things just to store it all. Me roxxors ur joxxors.
