I imagined Zaiu's voice to sound something like the way it does. Anyone who has a distinct love for furry creatures will never have a harsh voice. That would be an affront to humanity.

On that note, Zevis's response to my recording proves to me that I am an affront to humanity since I quite obviously fit the scenario described above. My voice is the bane of speaker systems, because it comes out "bass-ish" according to some. If you have the bass turned down or off, you won't hear me at all. Otherwise, I don't know what to tell you beyond the fact that Technology is a fickle entity, and enjoys late-night walks on the beach with Fate. It seems that the two have had a little too much "cosmic nectar" and decided that they ought to get a few laughs at my recording's expense.

At any rate, don't ask me to pick out an individual from SoCal from a line of people based on sound alone; that would be very hard for me to do, since I can't detect an accent in Dolphin's voice for the life of me.

I had to put up an effort to not mumble in that recording. There's still a hint of slight mumbliness in it, though. I can sing much better than I can speak (I can even sing falsetto), but I still don't have a microphone to show you. I have a recording of me singing, but I wasn't even remotely trying to sound good. It's also available on my website, but I don't feel like linking to it. It's from a Beatles/Beastie Boys covermash contest at OddTodd.com (link in sig, look around if you really want to hear it).

I knew a bilingual guy once who spoke French in a high squeaky voice and English in a low growly one. I've always wondered what was with that. It was as though he had partitioned his vocal chords' power spectrum.

My voice would be deeper if it weren't for the air conditioner in the background and my distance from the microphone. And I do sing better standing up, too :P

Dolphin has a touch of a Valley Girl inflection, but not a real accent.

Hmph. I should have expected that. Well, it's somewhat of a large file (960 K or so), but I would like to post an example of my singing voice. Perhaps I can record something smaller and send it to Kel.

Dolphin's voice is higher than I expected, but not outrageously so. :P I can hear a very slight accent in the recording, perhaps a slight touch of a Spanish-speaker's accent? Probably not, but it's a little different than what I'm used to hearing.

Morgan sounds hilarious, but much as I had imagined he would.

I'll be gone for a few hours, but in the evening I'll attempt to record myself singing something shorter. Perhaps I'll do "Edelweiss," for our Germanic members. :P

My family is Macedonian (I'm third generation American), and the population here is about half Hispanic; since I grew up speaking English the accent didn't really set in, but I'll post something else later that uses words with more "L" and "A/O" sounds, for example.

There will be a better sample of my voice where I speak clearly here within short order.

EDIT: Here it is: ADoSTalk

And here is a short clip of me singing most of the first verse of a song I wrote when I was little: BadOrRad (I thought it was really good when I wrote it.) I've discovered, upon recording myself singing, that I'm a really terrible singer. Either that or I'm just too tense and it's affecting the quality of my voice. Probably a combination of both.

EDIT 2: My voice does sound a little higher than in the previous recording. Maybe there's also something about this microphone that's making my voice higher and worse-sounding.

Morgan's the only one who sounds normal to me and easy to understand. Zeviz' russian timbre also helps a lot and makes it easy to listen to him. But the rest of you with your heavy accents - I have to concentrate hard to get what you say. :)

Are you serious, Drakey, that you don't understand Morgan, or making fun of me? Anyway, he just said: "Good morning, spiderweb community, and good night."

You actually pronounce your name in its entirety, Slp006? I don't know why this surprises me, since I don't bother to pronounce mine at all, but... You're a collection of random numbers and letters! I'm sure that not random, but still. You could pass for a license plate!

—Alorael, who now demands more evil accents. Will anyone contest Zeviz' position as EVOL dictator?

Ooo! I was waiting for someone to inquire about my random numbers and letters. Well, you sort of did, Alo, so that's sufficient enough to warrant a story in my book.

Right, well, the SLP is an abbreviation of "Slippy" of the popular Starfox series. I was a big fan of the SNES and N64 games back in the day. 006 is the agent number of Alec Trevelian (sp) of the movie Goldeneye. It's sort of a slick clue towards my actual name.

At least, I thought it was really slick ten years or so ago. I've used this handle on the Internet since I was about eight years old, since I despise change. It just sort of stuck with me, I suppose, and it seems to amuse everyone online...at least until they find out the story behind it. Oh well. Maybe I'll put it on a license plate someday.

Slp, your voice sounds very much the way I thought it would. I was reading you name kind of like "slip" without the "i" sound, so good to know it's letter by letter.

Morgan's voice is pretty close to what I thought it might be, too.

ADoS's second clip is better than the first (got rid of the background sound), and the song, was kind of funny...

Zevis stated earlier that he couldn't hear me, so I decided to record a new one. This one should be a lot clearer than the other one. I can at least listen to it without cringing at it.

Let's hope Geocities is nice to me. EDIT: it wasn't, but the link below should work now.

I speak again. But now I speak up!

Also: ADOS, you must post a recording of you singing praise to Juicy Lucy the General Moderator! That would be quite appropriate, I think.

I looked into why the previous file wouldn't load, and it appears that the site I'm using doesn't allow for hotlinking of files larger than 250K. I believe I'll record a much shorter clip soon, and post it tonight.

ef- I only found Morgan's hung-over tone of voice hilarious. He was perfectly comprehensible, although the volume of the sound clip was a little low.

Well, that was foolish.

Here I am, attempting to find all sorts of free file-hosting services, forgetting all along that my university allows students to upload and host files!

Here is the link for my rendition of "Yesterday." Hopefully it works, but knowing how much of an imbecile I am at this sort of thing, it probably won't.

Wow, Stug. That wasn't half bad! Have you practiced your vocal skill with the Beatles, or are you just simply a better singer than I would expect most people to be?

Thanks, Slp. I took vocal and harmonium (an instrument from North India) lessons for six years, and I used to have quite a fine voice before it changed. My voice was dreadful for quite some time after it changed, but it's improved steadily over time in tone and range, and I'm getting into good singing form once again.

I only chose "Yesterday" because it's a well-known song and suits my range nicely. I could definitely record myself singing something non-Beatles. With my newfound file storage capabilities, it'll be no trouble at all.

Slp, this one was much better. Your voice in this recording has a slightly mysterious quality that I'd expect from Drakey.

Stug, you sing very well.

ADoS, your new recordings sound better than the previous one. And your singing didn't sound that bad. (At least to my music-incompeten ears.)

Morgan's recording vasn't very hard to understand when I turned my speakers all the way up.

Ef, about German and Russian accents, I think the two are much more similar to each other than they are to English. At least when I was taking German in high school, teacher said that my pronounciation was better than that of American students.

Not bad, Stuggie. A guitar would've helped, of course, but you did very well without, and I guess it's not really necessary with such a well-known song...

Still having a bit o' trouble with the built-in mic... Audacity works, but I have to get close and use my stage voice to make it audible and that produces that wispy sound in Stug's recording but many times worse. Dolphin, do you know if there's any way to turn up the sensitivity?

Much better, Slp, you sound somewhat interested this time. :P

ADoS, you may not be the greatest singer now, but I really do think you've got potential. Voice lessons would help to bring that out, as would constant practice...

Morgan's accent is the least notable among those who actually have them, but it's still charmingly British. The more I hear these accents, the more I want to live in either the UK or Australia long enough to pick one up...

Using Audacity, there is a slider with a picture of a mic next to it that increases and decreases the input volume. Go to "view" and then to "Float Mixer Toolbar" if my description is too vague.

Edit: typos

1. Thanks. I don't mean to sound boring. It's just that I hate making recordings of my own voice, so I end up sounding flat due to the thoughts of my voice sounding foolish that flow through my brain. I'm also glad that Zeviz got to hear it.

2. I agree. ADoS could reach the level of Stug with practice.

That was the impression I got too. This voice recording is really interesting. I'd never have thought that Russian and German had anything in common.
